Who’d have thought that Rush Limbaugh would become the great uniter in this divisive political season?

Indeed, he has united decent people of all stripes and persuasions with his vile remarks about a Georgetown law student.

Perhaps by now you you’ve heard of Sandra Fluke, who created a smallish tempest when she tried to testify before a congressional committee considering the federal Health and Human Services contraception mandate and was denied a place at the (all-male) table. There really was no reason for her to testify. The subject was religious freedom versus government overreach, not contraception per se, but this detail no longer seems to matter.

Fluke stalked out of the hearing room and has enjoyed the media spotlight ever since. She did finally get to testify at an unofficial hearing convened by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi during which she focused on Republican “censorship,” which, fascinating as it sounds, was a sidebar to a non sequitur.

You may be excused for being confused or bored by all this talk of contraceptives. Having access to contraception hasn’t been controversial except in the Catholic Church for some time and wouldn’t be now if not for the new mandate that nearly every employer offer insurance to pay for it.

The only question — ever — has been whether the federal government can force religious organizations to pay for something that violates their freedom of conscience. For the record, if I were dictator, I’d put contraceptives in the drinking water on college campuses. But the Catholic Church and other religious entities do not share my view, and our laws have always tried to allow generous exceptions to rules that conflict with moral principle.

The question of whether the Obama administration is acting constitutionally has been posed to the courts by religious-liberty scholars (and seven state attorneys general), so we’ll have an answer soon enough. In the meantime, the administration has promised to “accommodate” religious groups so that only insurance companies have to pay for women’s contraception.

Whether this is an adequate remedy is also debatable. Can the government really force private insurance companies to cover certain medications or procedures? What if religious organizations are self-insuring, as is the case with many Catholic organizations? And, isn’t this just an accounting sleight of hand, because in the end the religious entity would be paying for the morally offensive product?

These are clearly compelling questions on which Limbaugh might have focused his gargantuan energies. Instead, he attacked Fluke in the vilest terms. Moreover, by addressing her argument that college women need contraception and should be able to get it for free, he essentially lent credence to the opposition narrative that this is all about birth control.

Inadvertently, Rush also helped advance the argument from the left that Republicans are waging a war against women. After referring to Fluke as a “slut” and a “prostitute,” he offered the following proposition:

“So Miss Fluke, and the rest of you feminazis, here’s the deal. If we are going to pay for your contraceptives … we want something for it. We want you to post the videos online so we can all watch.”

The image suggested is equally degrading to Limbaugh given his obvious familiarity with “watching,” and invites unflattering speculation. To wit: It is entirely possible that Limbaugh himself never needed contraception in college, but virtue in the absence of opportunity is hardly a moral triumph.

I am not convinced by Fluke’s premise that her need for contraception is anyone else’s responsibility. There is perhaps some logic in subsidizing contraception for the poor, which the government already does through Title X, to reduce abortions and prevent the conception of children who, owing to a parent’s inability to care for said progeny, might become wards of the state. This, again, is a sidebar tangential to the key question.

The point is that Limbaugh has so offended with his remarks that he has further muddled the issues. I realize he’s “just an entertainer,” as his apologists insist, but he is also considered a leading and powerful conservative voice. By his remarks, he has marginalized legitimate arguments and provided a trove of ammunition to those seeking to demonize Republicans who, along with at least some of their Democratic colleagues, are legitimately concerned with religious liberty.

As a bonus, he has given his “feminazis” justification for their claims that conservatives hate women. Limbaugh owes Ms. Fluke an apology — an event doubtless many would love to watch.

  1. Well, OK, Rush boobed, conservatives hate women and the Tea Party is composed of racist puppy-blenders. But our government is still spending us – and children yet unborn – into penury. Not to trivialise these other obviously important issues, but could we talk about that instead?

    1. You are kidding right? What is more important than Limbaugh
speaking? Who cares that we are being transformed. Who cares
that gas is climbing. Who cares there are few jobs. Who cares that
we won’t use our own resources. Who cares that this govt wants to own
you from cradle to grave. Who cares that they don’t want anyone
to speak out. Oh heck…who cares. The most important thing that we
MUST address is contraceptives and Limbaugh.

      1. Hey did you see the article on Attorney General Holder stating that the US government has the right to kill US citizens suspected of terrorist activities without the benefit of trial, when the government considers it is not “feasible” to apprehend the suspect and bring him to trial?

I think that is an important issue that we all might want to discuss. It’s no fluke that we are stuck discussing contraception.

        Gas prices are rising….

But, as Rush said: it is time to wag the pill….

        1. Now you are comming to the defense of a known terrorist who was blown away in Yemen. Someone who was known to advocate terrorists activeities to kill innocent American citizens. Now whose side are you on?

          1. I am on the side of American liberty. Americans are guaranteed to be presumed innocent until proven guilty through a trial by jury where you confront the witnesses against you. Stating that it would just not work too well to apprehend a suspect so we should just blow him to bits as he is sitting on his prayer mat in a compound in Yemen–you really see no problem with that? If he was in the act of committing the crime–as in an armed suspect holding up a bank–then lethal force is permitted. It is not permitted to use military drones to target and kill a suspect who is not in the midst of the commission of a crime, no matter how heinous the crimes you accuse him of are.

Does nobody see the hypocrisy of AG Holder insisting that the non-citizen terrorist detainees in Gitmo be guaranteed a trial by jury, but an American citizen suspected–suspected, not convicted- of terrorist plots is killed by a strategic  military strike? And he continues to speak to legal students about how this is legal and justified?

          2. So if an enemy plane is heading for NYC or Portland Maine during a time of war, (remember the terrorist declaration of war?) we should wait to see if they are actually going to drop a bomb or pull another 9/11? When you come across a rabid animal in the woods and you have a gun, what do you do?

          3. Sure, you can shoot down the plane if they are in commission of a terrorist act. And you better hope your information was correct. Otherwise you just killed dozens of innocent people.
Rabid animals are not granted Constitutional rights. American human citizens are.

          4. Fly your plane in a no fly zone around DC and see how fast you have company. We didn’t start this war with bin Laddens bunch. They did, in every war enemy sodiers are killed. I consider this guy who joined the terrorist one of their soldiers. You can consider him what ever you wish.

          5. “CIA Target: Americans Officials: U.S. Citizens Working for Al Qaeda Can Be Killed in CIA Actions

“The authority to kill U.S. citizens is granted under a secret finding signed by the president after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks that directs the CIA to covertly attack al Qaeda anywhere in the world. The authority makes no exception for Americans, so permission to strike them is understood rather than specifically described, officials said.”

This policy has been implemented and publicly acknowledged at least once. On November 3, 2002, the CIA killed a US citizen of Yemeni origin, Kamal Derwish, during its predator drone strike on an al-Queda terrorist in Yemen.

        2. “But, as Rush said: it is time to wag the pill….”

Umm, now pill or many of them. He seems to be quite expert in the ones that make him high or cause an erection. I’m not to sure if he understands other medications.

      2. Certainly not the Republican Party. Their only care seems to be that President Obama is a one term President. They realy don’t care that there is a dire need for jobs ot put people back to work in decent paying jobs that will support a family. That is not something they care about. They have come out on national television, radio, print articles, repeatedly stating that their number one priority is the removal of President Obama from the White House.

        1. Can’t you see that the reason the Republicans want Obama to be a one-term president is because he has not created jobs, families are sinking fast, energy prices are rising, the scope of government is increasing into more and more of a citizen’s daily life, the Nobel Peace Prize President is waging war all over the world–pray tell, why should we re-elect this president?

          1. Create jobs? He has tried and been blocked every step of the way by the obstructionist Tea Party. The very month he took office the leaders of the Republican Party declared their #1 priority was to make sure he was a one term president.
Do you have such a short memory? Do you not recall the financial crisis this country was in when he took office? Ford, Chrysler, GM on deaths door? Our banking industry ready to collapse? This country and the rest of the world on the verge of going into a full scale depression?
Wars? Created by who and underfunded by who? One is done the other, if I had my way would be done already.
If McCain had his way we would be in several more shooting wars at this moment.

          2. Boo hoo–President Obama was elected with Democrat majorities in both houses–and it was the TEA party that blocked it all? How many Congress members are part of the TEA party?
I recall the financial mess that was going on before Obama was elected. I think his leadership was lacking. I think his policies made the situation worse.
Wars: Obama campaigned on “Iraq is the wrong war; Afghanistan is the right war.” I disagree. Neither war is the right war. And we had no business meddling in Libya, or Yemen.
I don’t know if McCain would have been any better. I was not a fan of McCain. I was not a fan of Bush. I am not a fan of Obama. I don’t buy the argument that poor Obama is just a victim of bad circumstances and those nasty evil obstructionist Republicans.

          3. Iraq was the wrong war and still is. The only reason we went there was to gain access to their oil. Funny thing is that France got the inside track on their oil on our dime. Ironic.
You are correct that he had a majority in both houses when he was elected and their performance angered enough voter that they were defeated in 2010. Now the approval rating of Congress has dropped even further. In Congress I believe there are approximately 100 republican representatives who are affiliated with the Tea Party. There are all but a handful of Republican Congressmen and Repubican Senators that have signed a pledge to Grover Norquist to never raise taxes. Is that the possible explanation why the Iraq and Afghanistan wars were unfunded?

    2.  I guess you just woke up and noticed that we are in debt.  The economy was relatively strong during the Bush presidency and yet, he set the country on a course for massive debt accumulation.  Did you sleep through the part where taxes were drastically cut on the wealthy while two wars were being waged?  Did you miss the memo that the president was adding another trillion in unfunded liability when he gave the drug companies their beloved Medicare Pt D handout?  A good economy is a good opportunity to curtail spending and reduce debt loads. That was squandered.

Now this president takes the off the balance sheet liabilities and puts them right up front….is that irresponsible?  I think not.

Bush promised that his tax cuts would not increase the deficit at all.  In fact, they ballooned the deficit for more than $3 trillion and counting.

Poor victimized conservatives.  In truth, you are the ones who make a big mess and then blame the other guy.  Obama has done more to combat the deficit in 3 years than Bush did in 8, but you are content in keeping your head under a rock.  Good luck with that.

      1. Bush was bad, but that doesn’t make Obama good. I do credit Obama with running a highly transparent (or at least, ‘obvious’) administration, but the arrant corruption puts the fussier voters off.

As for “Poor victimized conservatives.  In truth, you are the ones who make a big mess and then blame the other guy,” take a look at the cities and states which are in the worst shape and note who’s been running them for decades.

        1. Yes, Red States are net money importers from the federal government and blue states are net money exporters. The progressive states have better economic fundamentals and contribute far more than they take. The redder the state, the more they rely on federal money. The NY Times just had a big piece on this very issue about two weeks ago.

Conservatives preach small government as they suck on two teats.

Basically, blue states have higher wages and subsidize red states. The extend of this is what is really astounding. Some states like Mississippi take more than 2.5X what they pay in. If there are any real socialists out there they are republican governors. Red states are moochers.

Here’s the link to the story from PolitiFact….
          http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2012/jan/26/blog-posting/red-state-socialism-graphic-says-gop-leaning-state/

          1. Red States are net money importers from the federal government and blue states are net money exporters.

To the extent that federal spending is to buy things in the marketplace, red states are net value exporters  to the federal government and blue states are net value importers, the flows of money and value balancing each other out. Or to put it another way, the government may be spending money disproportionately in red states simply because it finds what it needs disproportionately in those states. There may even be a compliment to red state productivity hidden in the datum.

To the extent that federal spending is not to buy things – for instance, to provide direct benefits to individuals like welfare, Medicaid, unemployment or social security, there may be an imbalance. But to know who’s mooching off whom, and who’s just providing more things for more money, we’d need to see the data analysed in much greater detail.

  2. So Jimmy Hoffa Jr. says “lets take the sons a b…… out”referring to the Tea Party. (in the presence of the President.) Maxine Waters says “the Tea Party can go straight to h…..”. Bill Maher calls Sarah Palin the c and the t words. Ed Shultz calls Laura Ingraham a s….. Mike Malloy says that Michelle Bachman is an “evil b…. from h….”    None of these things get any reaction from the hypocrite liberals who are howling like wolves right now. No call for boycotts. No cry for civility. Nothing. If you are a lefty you can demean women in any way you see fit as long as the victim is a conservative. You can declare war on the Tea Party and wish they would all go straight to h….
All of this is fine if you are a liberal/progressive/socialist/communist/marxist democrat hypocrite.

    1. Evidently you failed to read the above article and scolled down to rant. The point of the peice was that namecalling and it’s responses cloud the issue of government mandated contraception coverage.

  3. “I am not convinced by Fluke’s premise that her need for contraception is anyone else’s responsibility.”

You could literally say that about any aspect of health insurance coverage. I’m also not convinced that by some convoluted logic, Fluke advocating for contraceptives to be included in women’s coverage somehow becomes your responsibility.

  4. Kathleen Parker wrote: “I am not convinced by Fluke’s premise that her need for contraception is anyone else’s responsibility.”
Incorrect. Fluke is not asking for handouts from anyone. She is simply asking that the pill and other contraceptive devices be covered under the insurance for which she is already paying a high premium. Her premium may go up, but she and the other insurance holders would pay for that rise. I think this is fair because many young women do not require medications or costly treatments, whereas older insurance holders likely charge much more to the insurance company. Most insurance companies do cover contraceptive meds anyway. Also, can I just say that if men had uteruses then this issue would have been settled long ago. Because this is an issue that affects women’s health costs, of course Fluke deserved a spot in the hearing.

  5. Stories like this which are ginned up by the right prove how far they are will to go in their attempt to kill any kind of public healthcare. One thing I’m sure we can count on, we ain’t seen nothing yet.

  6. Why does no one want to comment on private health care insurance, which is what George Washington University has, with the premiums paid by the students, being required to provide health care for women.   Not free, not provided by the government, but part of the University required health insurance?  It is not religious freedom, but health care.

  7. When the disgusting and inaccurate things this man says daily finally get scrutinized by the broader public (not just the usual low information crowd) things unravel quickly.

This man’s entire media empire is predicated on conjuring hatred towards each other.  Sunlight is the best disinfectant, they say.  As people get to hear even a few minutes of this man’s rants, the ugly reality of his hate speech generates disdain from the sensible and decent among us.

The first amendment protects his right to spew his venom, but it cannot protect him from the wrath he brings upon himself.  Rush and the EIB network are getting an object lesson in accountability.  It is about time.

  8. Ms. Fluke was advocating for women like a friend of hers who needed a contraceptive prescription (hormones) to treat a medical condition (polycystic ovarian syndrome). She was not demanding contraceptives for herself.

Limbaugh twisted her testimony (assuming he even listened to or read it) to mean that she was asking the church to pay for contraceptives for herself. On that basis, he slandered her as a prostitute, and revealed that he doesn’t know the difference between Viagra (which needs to be taken for each episode of sexual intercourse) and the Pill, which is taken at the rate of one per day whether a person has sex or not.

Georgetown accepts Federal money, and thus must abide by Federal rules in regards to health insurance and other matters. If they won’t want to cover contraception as part of the health insurance their students purchase, they can choose not to take any more of our tax dollars. Simple as that.

The purpose of this big flap is simple–the Republicans hope to destroy health insurance reform by allowing employers–including your employer and mine–to slice away whatever coverage they happen to want to get rid of.

Thus, if your employer believes that smoking cigarettes is evil, and that all lung cancer comes from smoking (not accurate), he could make you pay out of pocket if you develop lung cancer.

  9. thank you Rush. your loud-mouthed ignorance is losing the GOP more votes everyday. of course the clown car full of candidates they have doesn’t help them either. Obama 2012, landslide.
