BANGOR, Maine — Hollywood Casino Hotel & Raceway will offer table games a day early to benefit Special Olympics Maine.

Organizers of the Law Enforcement Torch Run are offering a chance for patrons to preview the table games from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, March 15, in exchange for a donation of $75 per person — or $130 per couple — to Special Olympics Maine. The event is open to the first 150 people who sign up.

The torch run is an annual event leading up to the Special Olympics Summer Games, during which an estimated 700 law enforcement officers run about 900 miles carrying the Special Olympics Flame of Hope.

The event will include hors d’oeuvres, one-time entry to the Steak and Crab Epic Buffet, a cash bar benefiting Special Olympics Maine and a change to learn the table games that will be opening to the public the next day.

Hollywood Casino also will host a blackjack tournament as part of the event, with Special Olympics Maine awarding cash prizes to the top three winners. The casino will offer discounted hotel rooms to those who want to stay the night after the gala.

Though no other cash winnings will be awarded to table game winners during the sneak peak, slot machines will be live and available as usual.

Bangor Police Chief Ron Gastia, director of the Maine Law Enforcement Torch Run and the Maine Chiefs of Police representative for Special Olympics, said the fundraiser will help fund efforts to improve physical fitness, self-confidence, personal growth and courage of Mainers with intellectual disabilities through athletic training and sporting events.

“I commend Hollywood Casino for recognizing the need and for their willingness to help law enforcement efforts with this worthy cause,” he said.

For information or to sign up, call Special Olympics Maine at 879-0489 and speak with Linda Fredericks at ext. 10 or Lisa Bird at ext. 15.

    1. Not sure what you mean:

I think what you should be saying is:

Congrats to Hollywood Casino and law enforcement for this event. Very good cause. Again, Penn National doing very good things.

    1. It may be good for the Special Olympics, but I feel it is also taking advantage, using the Special Olympics to draw in people to debut “….Casino” gambling!… Just my thoughts…

      1. If it’s good for the Special Olympics, why worry what the Casino is gaining? I think it’s a win/win for both parties.

  1. a great way to get funds for the Special Olympics Maine…  wish i could still be part of the torch run like i did in middle school and high school a few yrs after that…. the runs i did from start to finish were great, had good times with the guys…. i see a few of the guys i ran with from time to time… i wasn’t the only high schooler that was joining in the runs either a bunch from other high schools were joining in it too, to show support and to have fun…. a few runners from sumner high school and ellsworth high school took part……..

  2. Hmmmm – a casino offering people the chance to ‘play’ in a blackjack tournament in which they won’t actually have a chance of winning.  As usual – that seems like a great deal, for the casino.

    1. Educate yourself on the tournament structure. It’s not that difficult. I understand it is much easier to post a non-sense statement that clearly wasn’t thought through. It must be tiring, being that miserable……

    2. Take the blinders off!!

“Hollywood Casino also will host a blackjack tournament as part of the event, with Special Olympics Maine awarding cash prizes to the top three winners.”

Thats how most BJ tourneys work, only the top 3 or 4 finishers win money.
