BANGOR, Maine — A night shift manager at Dunkin’ Donuts on Main Street is facing a felony theft charge in connection with an estimated $20,000 in cash receipts that never made it to the bank.

Lisa Marie Honnell, 42, of Milford was arrested Friday on a Class B felony charge of theft by unauthorized taking, Bangor police Sgt. Larry Weber said Monday, citing an arrest report. If convicted, Honnell faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $20,000.

Honnell is now out on bail, according to an official at Penobscot County Jail.

According to city police, Dunkin’ Donuts officials became suspicious when they discovered that seven or eight deposits that should have been made over the last two months did not arrive at the bank at the end of overnight shifts Honnell was covering, Weber said.

During the course of questioning by Officers Jason Stuart and David Farrar, Honnell admitted that she had not deposited the money to the bank, Weber said. The report did not indicate whether any of the missing money had been recovered.

    1.  Stealing is never right, no matter the situation.

That being said, whenever people find themselves in a situation involving money (gambling addiction, drug problems, mortgage defaulting, etc) they tend to be so desperate, that they don’t consider the consequences (or the fact that people will notice $20,000 missing).  She probably though she could replace it before anyone noticed, or something along those lines. People just aren’t thinking straight when they reach that stage of desperation.

        1.  Nope, no more insight, I’ve never met this woman. I just happen to know that addiction and other circumstances can make people desperate, and do things they may not otherwise do, as well as affect their ability to think clearly.

It’s entirely possible that this isn’t the case, but it’s also possible that it is.

    2.  You’d think the bank would notice when the first deposit bag never show’d  up and notify the owner.

      1. What? This is off the wall, you expect banks to track who is making a deposit? It is the owners responsiblity, and in this world of electronic banking, it is very easy to monitor bank transactions. Though I am sure for a price, the bank would do it. I am also sure it would an outrageous cost.

      2. They did , but they let people steal enough to make it a felony ! Taking people to court is big business and you have to have them take enough so they get jail time ! Plus company is insured for theft and there is a minimum amount that has to be taken before it kicks in !

      3.  I’m not saying that DD shouldnt be accountable for their own transactions but if I was doing buisness with a bank commercially and every morning when they count the reciepts deposited in the overnite box they have a bag from my buisness to count but all of a sudden the bags stop showing up, I would expect a call from the bank saying hey whats up did you go out of buisness? Just a simple courtesy when you pay a bank to handle your deposits.

      4. I’m sure if she were the bank’s only customer, that might be a possibility.  Good grief.  Get real.

  1. One way to augment your slave minimum wage salary. Maybe had to buy a health plan with the proceeds.

    1.   “Slave wage”, huh? If you don’t like what you’re doing, change, by getting more schooling, different job or job training. Don’t take the job if you think it’s “Slave Wages”, don’t dishonor yourself by stealing what’s not yours.

      1.  If everyone did that, who would serve the coffee???  Someone else making a non-living wage.

      2. Oh, come on. Not everyone has the luxury of obtaining more schooling or job training. It costs money and time and skills, not to mention some people have learning disabilities, or just aren’t smart enough. And for people like that, finding a different job is never easy, ESPECIALLY in this economy.

          1. Of course not.  Upping the minimum wage to a livable standard for the people who have to work these jobs would be OK.

          2.  If they made life wonderful for working at McDonalds and Burger King would people push to go to college to make their lives better?? I say keep standards low so more people want more out of their lives! I have goals because I work these kind of jobs without have a college degree… Someday I want more for my family!!

          3.  Easy to say but harder to do. Minimums are just that and can sometimes help to hold us back. A Living wage is a better idea but once again much harder to implyment as it can not be mandated or regulated hence the “mimimum” wage.

          4. “Livable” wage is relative and always changes when the new union contract is up for negotiation.  The irony is that even the poorest of those who claim to be the “99%” are actually the 1%er’s compared to many in the world.  It’s all subjective and relative.  We should all be grateful instead of greedy.

          5. OK…hmmmm…tough call. Your infant son is starving to death TONIGHT…No, don’t bother trying to build a time machine and improve your schooling or career opportunities or to undo some screwball decision you made in the past or some other “social safety net make it all better program”…Your infant is starving TONIGHT…as in right now. You don’t have a car and nobody is willing to provide you with anything. You’re telling me you wouldn’t steal, leaving your infant child to die in your arms just so later on you can hold your head high and say, “I didn’t steal”??? Puh-leeeeeze…

          6.   My child is not “Starving to death” as a matter of fact he has a good job and just bought a new car, all without benefit of post high school education (his choice). So I won’t engage in this no-win argument except to say I would help anyone in that position as was offered to me when I was in need.

          7.  Yes, but try to remember those days when things were tough and you needed $20,000 for huggies.

        1.  And many who have learning disabilities etc already get Social Security so blah! If you don’t like your job get a different one!! I have a crappy job but starting pay was higher than fast food and coffee shops… That’s whats wrong with people today! If you can’t help yourself it must be someone else’s fault! People aren’t made to take responsibility for their actions!

      3. If everyone was educated who would serve you coffee??? or serve you food or mow your lawn or make your shoes, clothes,  etc. etc… Just think if we still had the 35,000 shoe factory jobs here in Maine that we lost, welfare would have 35,000 less people on it rolls. and they would all be paying taxes instead of using them…

        1.  Um, we already have some college educated folks serving us coffee, fries, and mowing lawns.  Not everyone who went to college was able to find related employment upon graduation.

  2. Its not the banks fault they aren’t there to hold anyone’s hand. Its a sad loss but this should have be discovered early on not weeks later. I feel there is a failure also on the business owner of this franchise….with simple cash management policies in place this potentially could have been avoided.

    1. Don’t worry about the comments here. Those of us who go there know what’s going on. The mind is completely taken over by those that know very well how to do it. I’m glad you got out and hopefully you are rebuilding your life. We have other friends who are in the same boat as you who have signed out of HS forever.

  3. Obviously, It’s either Hollywood Slots’ fault for creating a gambling addict or Lepage’s fault for not maintaining the safety net for the community’s most fragile citizens.

  4. White collar crime , not a priority for prosecution.
She will be out in no time.
The woman who stole 10,000 from her bank is set free. ” Time served”.

  5. An additional crime not reported is the cost of some of the speciality drinks that DD’s serves & charges for……Crazy…..

  6. “when they discovered that seven or eight deposits that should have been made over the last two months “….  Hmmm… odd it took that long to notice deposit slips missing!!

    1. i do not understand how people can just slam everyone. people make mistakes. the issue is being dealt with. but to turn the blame on the new owners of this particular DD is uncalled for. when your a business owner it is extremely hard to keep up all the time. what if lisa had a good excuse why they werent put in and thats why it was not looked into. as for knowing when to push any issue, you need hard proof to do anything.

    1. If its the same owners as a few years ago, then they might as well sell, that store has gone downhill alot

    2. ” Dunkin’ Donuts officials became suspicious when they discovered that seven or eight deposits that should have been made over the last two months did not arrive at the bank at the end of overnight shifts “….

Ahhh. That’s the answer, with the US Postal cuts, it takes a longer travel time for the deposit slips to arrive!!

  7. What do they expect? They hire people for 8.00 an hour with little or no education, and then put them in charge of handling the money. Not saying that only retarted people steal, but if you don’t make much money to start and then you see a pile of cash, duh! And as far as the people saying that it might be ok to steal money because kids are starving? She works at a donut shop where they throw away tons of donuts every night. If starving was an issue I think that there might have been a better solution to stealing 20,000 in cash. This is a store where the best and most lucrative business is the drug deals that go down in the parking lot and bathrooms. No suprise that the manager was involved with something like this. You get what you pay for.

  8. In these times, I’m not sure it is wise to report that much cash is being deposited.  I see this somehow eventually intertwining with a bath salts or prescription pills story.
