BELFAST, Maine — A major health care information technology firm in Belfast is looking for more than a few good people to join its team — about 80 more, to be precise — and is casting its net farther afield to find them.

“We’ve been very blessed since we came up here, but we’re starting to see that the amount of applicants coming to us that are qualified to do the work is smaller and smaller,” David Tassoni of athenahealth said last week. “We’re trying to reach out and get ourselves known.”

The company is holding an open house next week at the Spectacular Event Center in Bangor in order to increase awareness of what athenahealth does and about the positions that will be available.

Currently there are about 400 people working in the Massachusetts-based company’s Maine operations center, located in part of the offices built by credit card giant MBNA. Tassoni said employment in Belfast has been growing at a rate of 100 people a year, with no signs of stopping or even of slowing down.

“Our belief is that it is going to continue at a pace that is slightly accelerated,” he said, adding that he would be “very happy” if lots of people turned out at the Bangor event.

“I think it would be a fantastic problem if I had hundreds of people wanting to talk to me. I would love to have that problem,” Tassoni said.

The company manages billing and more for thousands of doctors and medical groups, including processing tons of paperwork and claims for insurance companies. Clients become subscribers to a sophisticated cloud-based software program and all paperwork is sent to athenahealth instead of their medical offices.

Last summer, Charlie Colgan of the Muskie School of Public Service at the University of Maine said that athenahealth’s clientele and work is likely to expand significantly over the next decade. There is a major push in the U.S. to create a system for electronic health records, he said, and that is what the company does.

Jobs that will be available over the next few months include client services analyst, enrollment analyst and revenue analyst. There are competitive wages and benefits, Tassoni said, as well as the opportunity to profit from an annual bonus program based on individual performance.

“I think we are a very stable company with high growth potential,” he said. “The real key piece is our culture. Our company, I believe, is exceptional about empowering people to meet potential. We give people a lot of room to grow and to learn.”

He said that the Belfast offices are casual and fun, with very little hierarchy and even the possibility of bringing dogs to work.

“At the end of the day, we’re really looking for people who are interested and engaged,” Tassoni said. “We are a mission-centric company. We’re looking for people who are passionate about what we’re doing.”

He said that the ability to problem solve and communicate are key ingredients for employees.

“We do look for college-educated people, without a doubt,” Tassoni said. “I think it’s the skills you learn in college courses that help you advance and prepare.”

However, many in the company don’t have college degrees but are just “exceptional” at research and problem-solving, he said.

One example is a former firefighter who has become one of his favorite people at athenahealth. Although his resume might not have seemed like a health-claims management job was the right fit, in fact he brought a great attitude and ability to learn when he joined the company.

“Now he’s one of my most trusted analysts,” Tassoni said.

The athenahealth open house will be held from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, at the Spectacular Event Center at 395 Griffin Road in Bangor.

  1. Any current or former employees of AthenaHealth here?  I’d be curious what they were like to work for???

    1. I have heard that these are the people who work to deny your insurance claims–owned by a cousin of GW Bush…

      1. and…not all insurance claims are honest. I didn’t know he had a cousin in the business but why wouldn’t he? They are smart successful billionairs that know how to run a business and a country. Good for them and good for the Maine people that want to go out and get a job instead of living off the ones that already have one.

      2. Its true it is owned by a member of the BUSH family, my daughter has worked there for several years and says its a very good place to work , good pay and great benefits !

      3. Great.  Give another reason to our entitlement generation to not apply.  “I don’t have the conscious to work for a company owned by Bush.”

        1. Oh, but I’m sure this company, at the very least, must require (and justifiably so) that its employees be conscious.  Who’d want deadheads on the payroll?

      4. Actually it is a public corporation now and any Mainer can buy shares for about $75 a share which up from $50 at the start of the year.

      5.  they don’t process insurance claims……they help get them paid for providers.  As usual misinformation is rampant.

      6.  Why does everything have to be political?  Athena is not an insurance company and does not DENY claims.  They are not Anthem, Cigna, Aetna, Medicaid or Medicare.  They work for physician practices to help submit claims TO insurance companies and recover money FROM insurance companies.  I have worked in the medical billing field for 20 years and have been following job advertisements on Athena for a while.  I just wish they were in Bangor and not so far away in Belfast.

  2. I worked for them once until some woman sent me an email of ants having a gang war.

It gave me chills and I had to leave due to emotional reasons later. Still scares me today!

    1. Was this before or after your supervisor brought you a few wine coolers? I heard about is.My Niece worked there,In that department at that time, and said it was a set up to get the woman fired.Total setup.2 women left in protest of her getting fired. The company might be ok,but the supervisor that set this up is a lowlife local townie.Worked for BOA till she got fired and had to be walked out of the place. The woman who got fired won her lawsuit, btw…So,you’ve got to wonder about a company who hires a bully to be a supervisor.I read the report that the supervisor wrote about the firing. It was full of misspellings third hand lies, and double negatives and looked like it was written by a 3rd grader.{No offense to 3rd graders}Shortly after the incident the department was disbanded and my niece was moved to another department.

  3. I have a friend who works there. The work is challenging but engaging. People get along at athena but people are human. It seems challenging yet rewarding. My friend is quite content, insurance from day one.

  4. Another invasion of privacy–and I imagine that the first call will be to India, then one will have to wait and muddle through understanding that person before asking if he/she can speak to a person in the United States.  Any time a person says “I think” instead of “I believe” when it comes to anything, one needs to ponder from whence he speaks.

  5. I do hope that this company continues to look at folks that don’t have a college degree. The expense of college is definately a roadblock for many, so requiring a degree could leave many well qualified people from seeking employment. I hope many of these folks attend the fair next week. I find it a little insulting when these companies state that they can’t find “qualified” people here in the state of Maine. It makes us sound like a bunch of dumb dumbs here!! Yes, I was fortunate enough to get a college degree, but only can find part time work. I hope this company stays here for years to come……..

    1. Did the governor call them and (ask, tell ?) them to hire people?  He really should let the people know what he is doing for them. It seems he has had some bad things happen and he sure needs some help in propping up his image.   Just a thought!

    2. All right, you asked for it BB.  This hypocrite-in-chief IS failing and he does it w/everything he touches.  The impending loss of jobs (47) at Dorothea Dix are a perfect example of what happens when he cuts funding and manages to muck this state up in grand style.
So now we have this health care firm needing 100 employees.  Great!  And the BDN covers this well.  But the problem is our moronic leader has just told a class of students that “Reading a newspaper is like paying someone to lie to you.” We can only hope that our local tv stations carry this information.
The common denominator in jobs lost vs. gained is our lying, math-challenged governor.

      1. And he also told them they didn’t need to go to college!!! Interesting that this company prefers college graduates.

  6. I have a couple family members who work here.. They love it.  And no I know a lot of people who work here who do not have college degrees.  Hopefully they get a good turn out

  7. they came to my college last year and was telling us about their business, the only thing that I found unprofessional was their “happy hour”. I think that is unprofessional for people to be drinking in a place of work. but that is just my opinion. I really wish they would expand their business to Bangor, like actually having work up here. I believe that they would have a lot more employees if they did that. who wants to travel all the way to Belfast?

    1. Ummm, maybe folks from the Belfast area who don’t want to travel ‘all the way’ to Bangor?

    2. A. I don’t think athenahealth requires people to imbibe as a condition of employment.

      B. Driving distance from downtown Bangor to athenahealth = 50 minutes.

There are plenty of people who commute that distance TO Bangor for work.  So what if someone does a reverse commute?  If someone is qualified for a full time job with benefits, and/or unemployed, I don’t think a 50 minute commute should stop them from going to the job fair that athena is hosting.

  8. Finally after losing thousands upon thousands of jobs this past year LePage lucks out with 80. This won’t even make a dent in jobs lost, but at least it is a very small start.

    1. How in hell can you logically blame LePage for losing “thousands and thousands”  of jobs last year??

  9. I work for athenahealth and it is a fantastic place to work.  As the article mentioned, it is a casual environment, but a lot is expected from ALL employees.  You are constantly learning and it will most likely be the most difficult job you have ever had (depending on which department you are in.)  Starting pay is relatively low, but if you are a high performer, it rises extremely quickly.  The culture is very fun and accepting and there are people from a wide variety of different backgrounds.  The company’s vision and mission are something that anyone can believe in…  athena is working to improve healthcare by taking a large part of the burden of getting paid off of doctors so they put more effort into what they do best… practicing medicine.  The software helps medical practice’s go paperless by turning paper charts electronic, thus making it more difficult for mistakes to happen… and that’s really the tip of the iceberg in regards to what athenahealth does.  It’s a great company to work for and has been rated one of the top 50 most innovative companies in the world by MIT.

Not to mention this company has been a boon for Belfast and the surrounding area.  It’s very rare to find such a great, career oriented company north of Portland… and it is right here in Belfast.  I strongly recommend at least attending the event to see what we are about. Check out their website if you want to learn more about the company…

    1. Good for you and thank you for verifying what us hard working Americans already know. I wish you much success.

  10. **** Edit: Sorry, I put down too much truth. **** It seems to be good for Belfast: God bless.  If you can take their lunacy, good for you.  “I’m not there anymore, that’s the main thing,” as Lenny Bruce once related.

  11. It’s great to see that John Bladacci’s Pine Tree Zones continue to work. Athenahealth came here, choosing Maine over every other state, because to these tax incentives. Part of the idea is once a company comes to Maine the workers of Maine make the place so attractive the company expands.
Over 8,000 jobs were created because of these tax incentives that continue to add jobs.
