ATTEAN TOWNSHIP, Maine — One snowmobiler was hospitalized in serious condition while another was charged with operating under the influence after an accident Thursday afternoon, according to the Maine Warden Service.
Snowmobiles driven by Robert Verge, 62, of Scarborough and Lawrence Salamone, 61, of Gorham collided on Big Wood Lake at around 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Cpl. John MacDonald, spokesman for the Maine Warden Service, said Friday morning.
Verge suffered head injuries and was taken to Jackman Health Center, where he was stabilized. He was then transported to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor by ambulance. Verge was listed in serious condition Friday at the hospital.
“I know he sustained some pretty serious head injuries. I don’t believe they’re life-threatening,” MacDonald said.
Salamone, who was uninjured, was charged with OUI on a snowmobile but wasn’t arrested.
MacDonald said the two men were riding together.
“I don’t know if it was head-on, but it was a front collision,” MacDonald said.
Both men were operating Ski-Doo snowmobiles and were not wearing helmets. The crash is still under investigation.
Sgt. William Chandler and Warden Paul Mason investigated the crash and were assisted by the Jackman Fire Department and EMS personnel from Jackman Ambulance.

Wishing Mr. Verge a speedy recovery!
Driving recklessly on snow mobiles? OUI… Thank God they weren’t on the highway and involved others!!
Nothing new here, same o same o. More Maine roulette on Snowmobiles.
Wait……. There’s snow left in Maine? Enough to snowmobile on?
Doesn’t matter when you’re drunk
I guess not.
Got another foot yesterday in the county….The sleding is great..Come on up….
Don’t tell them that, fool, now you’ll have to deal with them!
Speedy recovery Mr. Verge. Mr. Salamone, DRINKING AND DRIVING. is a no no. It does not matter if it is in an auto or on a snowmobile.
Spring fishing in Jackman is one of my favorite times.. I spend a week up there exploring all the brooks, ponds and Lakes every year.. Nice people too… Unlike certain parts of the wilderness where you are not allowed to travel, (Quimby) Jackman is open for bussiness.
No helmets?? Drunk driving? Smashing into each other in the middle of a lake?
I guess you dont need ” brain buckets” if there is nothing there.
Keep on doing what you’re doing, keep on getting what you’re getting. If these guys knew that they coud not drive anything for five years-and pay a huge fine, would they engage in this foolishness? I doubt it.
The name of the lake made me laugh, ha ha. Big Wood Lake in Jackman….wonder if they sell T-Shirts…..
Oh tee hee…
Pull my finger.
Why, would I hear a Queef???
*blush*
actually, the real name is Wood Pond, but the locals refer to it as big Wood Pond–never heard anyone joke about the name, but it is kinda funny,if you’re into sophomoric humor…
even better is instead of the smaller connected one being called little wood, it is little big wood.
spring is here. i look forward to the snowmobiles that speed into open water. always a great laugh
Ahhh, yes. Enjoying the Maine woods on a gasoline powered machine, and having a few good drinks. Hey, you can re-live your teenage years!
I don’t care to hike in the woods in my berkinstocks, just to see a tree.. Ride baby Ride
Snowmobiles don’t crash and hurt people. People crash and hurt people.
