ALTON – Joan Marie (Smith) DeRoche, 71, wife of Richard DeRoche, passed away peacefully March 15, 2012, at a Bangor hospital after a long illness with multiple sclerosis. She was born Aug 3, 1940, in Old Town.

She was a communicant of Holy Family Parish, Old Town, and was a member of Daughters of Isabella. Joan enjoyed spending time at the ocean, working in her gardens and going fishing. Her recent cherished moments were spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by two daughters, Donna Spencer and her five children, Devan, Shanea, Brucie, Peyton and Austin, and Karen-Lynn Spencer and her two children, Steven and Adam; one great-grandchild, Wyatte; two brothers, Alfred and Floyd; and two sisters, Betty and Norma. She was predeceased by her mother, Yvonne (Leblanc); father, Harry Smith; her infant daughter, Linda Spangler; and an infant great-grandchild, Rayne.

Services or celebration of life to be announced at a later date. Burial will be in the summer by the ocean and at Alton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers or contributions, please sponsor the local multiple sclerosis walk-a-thon held Sept. 29, or make a difference with money or time with a family member, friend or stranger.
