BIDDEFORD, Maine — Bankers says dozens of their customers in the Biddeford-Saco area received text messages from scammers trying to obtain debit card information and steal cash.
Thieves sent text messages to hundreds of customers of various financial institutions, telling them their ATM cards had been de-activated and that they had to call a local phone number to reactivate them.
Customers who called were asked for their ATM card numbers and their passwords.
Kevin Savage, president and chief executive officer of Saco & Biddeford Savings Institution, tells the Portland Press Herald that although most people were suspicious and didn’t provide the numbers, some did.
He says people who gave out the information should contact their bank immediately. He says the bank was not the victim of a data breach, that the scammers sent the texts to random people including people who were not customers of the bank.
Police say the messages apparently originated in Virginia.
My wife got one and we don’t have an account with Biddeford – Saco Savings, but we do have one with Norway Savings.

The crooks are always thinking up new ways to scam people out of their money. If they worked this hard on an honest job, they would have plenty of money.
