RICHMOND, Maine — Richmond police charged a vehicle full of young adults — including the driver — with alcohol-related offenses after a traffic stop on Main Street early Saturday morning.
Richmond Police Chief Scott MacMaster said officer Gary Hickey received a “be-on-the-lookout” request from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office for a brown 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee, which he located and stopped at the corner of Main Street and Park Road at 1:36 a.m. Several occupants in the vehicle were summoned and one passenger was arrested.
The driver, Samantha Kirkwood, 18, of 18 Prospect St., Topsham, was summoned for the civil infraction of illegal transportation of liquor by a minor and the traffic infraction of driving while in possession of an open alcoholic beverage container.
Joshua Thomas, 20, of 25 Primrose Lane, Brunswick, a passenger in the Jeep, was charged with illegal possession of liquor by a minor. He was arrested as a result of the traffic stop, charged with violation of conditions of release and on Brunswick Police Department warrants for failure to appear for an initial charge of failure to provide correct name and address; failure to appear; failure to appear for theft by unauthorized taking and for criminal trespass; and for violation of bail.
Also issued summonses for illegal possession of alcohol by a minor were passengers Sheila Duffy, 20, of 126 Fosters Point Road, West Bath; James Vanover, 20, of 12 Cushing St., Apt. 1, Brunswick; Robert Railton, 19, of 34 Shovelhead Drive, Jefferson; and Benjamin Farley, 19, of 11 Mannys Way, Freeport.
Hickey was assisted by Maine State Police and the Sagadahoc County Sheriff ’s Department.

I see a huge babysitting bill in the future for us tax payers…..
I read a lot in the BDN about underage drinking and alcohol related crimes and traffic accidents. Maybe it’s time for the “powers that be” to raise the taxes on all sales of alcohol just the same way that they did on cigarettes. Raise the taxes so the average person can’t afford to buy any. It’ll also give more revenue to the state. More revenue, less alcohol related crimes … makes sense to me.
