LAMOINE, Maine — A dispute over payment for a truck paint job led to the quadruple shooting earlier this month outside a Douglas Highway home that left one man dead and three others wounded, according to one of the four people shot.
Joshua McKinney, 25, of Ellsworth said Saturday that his recent arrest for drug possession has led some people to think the March 11 fatal shooting was somehow drug-related.
“It had nothing to do with drugs,” he said.
The original dispute was over a $1,200 paint job done to a truck owned by Michael Carter, the shooting victim said.
“Mike never paid us for all the work done on the truck,” McKinney said. “He had an issue and bitched about it. We’ve been friends for like 15 years. ”
McKinney said he and Torrey Garland, 34, also of Ellsworth, did the work on the truck under his business, Ellsworth Unlimited.
Police are still sorting through conflicting witness statements about the shooting that happened outside Carter’s home at 749 Douglas Highway at around 4:30 a.m. Sunday, March 11, Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said Saturday.
“We’re still trying to determine what happened,” he said.
One gun was collected as evidence, but police are not saying what type of weapon it is or whether it was the only weapon used, McCausland has said.
What police are saying is that Lawrence “Randy” Sinclair, 32, his brother Jacob Sinclair, 24, Garland and McKinney, all of Ellsworth, arrived in two vehicles at the Hancock County home of Carter, 30, and Tacy Mullins, 22.
The Ellsworth group and Carter, who “had been out partying — he was out at the bar,” had been communicating by cellphone throughout the night and early morning of March 11, McKinney said.
“I called him because he was at the bar and said something he shouldn’t have,” but got no answer. When Carter called him back, the two made peace, according to McKinney, and even spoke about McKinney painting another truck for him, he says.
“None of us realized it was that late” when “he invited us to his house” to talk, he said of Carter. “There was never any talk about fighting.” The Ellsworth group were not armed when they arrived, McKinney said.
“As we pulled into the driveway, I saw Mike Carter and Tacy come to the door,” McKinney said.
Carter had a 9 mm handgun in his hand, and “by the time I realized that, he was already shooting,” McKinney said. “I watched my best friend get shot in the forehead and another one get shot in the chest,” before getting shot himself.
Randy Sinclair was mortally wounded and later died at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where Garland still is being treated for his gunshot wound to the chest.
Garland, who was listed in critical condition at the Bangor hospital in the days after the shooting, had improved enough early last week for state police detectives to finally interview him about the incident, McCausland said.
Carter also suffered a gunshot wound that was not life-threatening, apparently caused when his girlfriend, Mullins, attempted to take the weapon, McKinney said.
“They were struggling over the gun,” he said.
Why his longtime friend started shooting is still a question McKinney is struggling with.
“It’s so out of character,” he said of Carter.
McKinney was treated at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth after the shooting and quickly released and Carter was taken to EMMC. McKinney admits that he had a previous drug problem with opiates more than three years ago, and said he was able to get off them by using Suboxone, which is one of the diverted prescriptions drugs he was caught with on Friday.
He said he acquired the Suboxone, used to treat opiate addiction, “because I am going through extreme withdrawals” from the pain medicine given to him at the hospital after the shooting.
The Bangor Daily News story about McKinney’s arrest for drug possession states the charges were not related to the shooting, but people have been linking the two, he said.
“Now everybody is going to believe it was drug-related,” McKinney said. “It was not drug-related. It had to do with a vehicle.”
BDN reporter Bill Trotter contributed to this story.

Mental note: don’t do any business with “Ellsworth Unlimited…”
Seriously. I’m sure his ’employer’ is happy he dropped the company name like that. I don’t see a raise in his future…
Doesn’t it say “McKinney said he and Torrey Garland, 34, also of Ellsworth, did the work on the truck under his business, Ellsworth Unlimited.” That would lead one to assume that he’s his own boss, right? At least, that’s how it’s worded.
I call BS!
This is totally consistent with the “rumors” going around the area.
Riiiight…they were all meeting for breakfast and then church.
And we are just supposed to take him for his word that he is telling the truth?
No, we aren’t. It’s after being told this, that the police check cell phone records and see if he’s telling the truth about the exchange of texts. I may be wrong about this, but I think cell providers even keep the content of the texts for awhile.
If there are texts the innocent will still have them, but the guilty would have erased his. Hopefully the cell providers would have a full and complete record.
No, but you could write a heluva country western song from it.
Lots of alcohol involved with this incident. I believe him on the “not drug related” part. Who knows on everything else.
I think it was more alchohol fueled then drug fueled. Bottom line it was money fueled. They wanted the money owed for the job they had done, IMO. Three men went to a home where two people were located, late at night, to discuss matter at hand. They didn’t count on the home owner greeting them with a gun! If they went there to kick some butt, they got theirs filled with lead. The police will sort out this stack of thugs. Most of us call 911 if we think someone is coming to our home to cause us harm. These people just call upon smith and wesson. One man won’t be back to collect. Booze and guns don’t mix!
Wow, like I’ve said before, people on here must have very strong calf musles!!! You all jump to conclusions like nothing I have ever seen!!! LOL Unless you have first hand knowledge about what happened just keep quiet and let the State Police figure out what went on that night. Thats what we pay them to do. If it was as easy as everyone thinks we wouldn’t even need them!
we dont need them
“Mike never paid us for all the work done on the truck,” McKinney said. “He had an issue and bitched about it. We’ve been friends for like 15 years. ” Friends?
I wonder how bad it would be if they weren’t?
Paint is a hell of a drug.
Don’t know anything about mixing paint but what I do know drugs and guns don’t mix
It is still all very sad. Someone lost thier life and someone else atleast is going to jail for a long time over it.
In my younger days I always wanted to get even lol Now I know its just part of doing business. I remember telling a guy one time its Halloween and kids like tossing rocks through windows lol . I never did but I did keep a few guessing . Grow up kids. No amount of money is worth getting hurt over or hurting someone else. They owe you money take them to court of do not beach about it. I have never bothered with the court I will just be too busy next time they call. funny thing is people who do not pay will be the first ones to call you when they need something else. If it was about revenge for a paint job not being paid revenge is a dish best served cold. Wait a few years by that time the people did so many people wrong they would not have a clue it was you. Also gives you time to think and realize it is just not worth it. like will always pay these people back i do not have too. This whole thing was wrong in so many ways.
This goes to prove that ” anyone and everyone has a gun”, that seems to be Maine’s motto.
Here here..I like it!
So, “because I’m going through extreme withdrawals” is the excuse that no drug addiction is going to get this guy off the hook? I’d say drugs were probably the main cause along with alcohol intake which caused this guy to think he is Quick-Draw McGraw! Once again, a doctor’s recommendation for additional drugs to get off opiates can be no excuse for murder. More than one person should pay for these crimes. No law or person can be excuse enough not to charge the physician or outlet who decided to get this man off hard drug use by using some type of other drug to curtail the originating drug use. Where was the “system” to keep this guy out of bars and the private and public warnings of the Suboxone?
Reading comprehension much? The guy ‘going through extreme withdrawals’ is NOT the guy who thinks he’s ‘Quick-Draw McGraw’. If you are going to bother to comment on an article.. especially negatively.. you should read it first.
Thanks for the comeback: Withdrawals of any kind as in this article denoted that there was an additional drug administered to the man which was “Suboxone”, and presumed to be a non-over-the-counter prescription drug. Research proves that this drug also has side-effects and combined with the original illegal drug he was taking, combined with alcohol could have led to the resulting behavior he showed and fatally caused to others. The “QDM” mention was if a weapon/s were available, there was someone at the residence which attempted to prevent the shootings, and if you read the rest of the comments, you will understand the reasoning behind available weapons used as a temper release. Sorry, but I did read the article first, thoroughly enough. Apparently you did not comprehend my statement.
Like the old saying goes it it looks like a snake, slither’s like a snake, and acts like a snake it’s a snake! Kind of looks like Mr. Ellsworth unlimited went debt collecting. And then here is a shock he needs suboxone because of withdrawls from opiates and he is having pain. Tough cookies! Apparently the suboxone was not his own because if he had had a script which the state requires a contract he would have not got busted for possession. I learned this when I worked at a doctor’s office that prescribed suboxone. The victims seem like they must have gotten threatened in order for them to meet them when they arrived with a gun. Guess in time this will get figured out.
I don’t know what happened, the gun just fired by itself, it was all just an accident!
Alcohol related, but he was sober enough to hit 2 targets dead on. Jeez. The girlfriend is very lucky she was not injured if truly as the article says she was the one who tried to take the gun away. Earlier articles said she was in the house, and I think one said that it was one of the Ellsworth boys trying to take the gun away. No arrests yet?
god people doing the right thing
I noticed he didn’t mention the ritalin he was caught with. I suppose he suffers from ADHD as well.
Truck paint job?? Really?? Seems a tad bit extreme. Small Claims court would probably have resulted in a better ending.
Is this paint job a code name for another new drug?
Apparently he never got advice to not talk to police or reporters. What a genius!! Hope someone else doesn’t roll first and tell all about the home invasion. If someone does….he is in biiiiiggg trouble.
Is the ‘newly painted’ truck, the same one that was totaled on RT 1 they day before? This is all conjecture til the Staties finish with their investigation but I agree, no Ellsworth Unlimited for me.
FYI no it wasn’t the truck that was totaled on RT 1a the day before…just letting you know
Thanks. One less rumor
Thanks. One less rumor
What is wrong with you people. Did you even read this story or can you even read…. Duhhh… You people make me ashamed to live here. Because you people make the rest of us Mainers look like idiots..

Paint job & alcohol = late night collection & hot lead = tragic ending. :0(
So what I’m getting from the majority of comments on here the next time I have a bill I don’t want to pay I should call who I owe and invite them over then shoot them and claim it was a home invasion….
why are you double posting?
I posted from Mobile and I posted once. BDN’s DISQUS posted it twice and I have no control over what they they do thanks.

That’s a good one:) Only if the bill collector shows up and threatens you and you feel for your life.

4. A person may use deadly force under subsection 3, paragraph B only if the person first demands the person against whom such deadly force is to be used to terminate the criminal trespass and the trespasser fails to immediately comply with the demand, unless the person reasonably believes that it would be dangerous to the person or a 3rd person to make the demand.
He says there was never any talk about fighting. That conflicts with what Jake Sinclair posted on facebook (he later removed the post but I’ll paste a copy of it below). Jake also gave a TV interview in which he said he went along as “backup”. The facebook post:
Mike carter invites people to his house because he tricks them into
thinking the situation is dif. I get woken up to come make sure he is
serious and basically watch him amd another guy either have it out or
hug it out.. who knew.. as i sat in a car with someone else and randy
stood in front of it we watched torey get shot before he got on mike
carters steps.. randy was standing there just watching and got some
chased and shot for no reason.. and josh and i who were sitting in the
vehicle and were approached and shot as we tried to runaway.. i was the
only one who made it out of the driveway without being shot.. the kid is
trying to say home invasion? Wouldnt u need to even approach his
home?.. what was done was murder in cold blood to people he would have
been friends with the next day im sure. I cant say i know exactly why
mike cartee and torey felt it nec. To meet in the first place. But
people are dead because of someone who was approached only by who he
wanted to be. He came away from his home and killed people. If he was
sp scared why not shut your door and call police. It will all come out
when they find no proof of anybody near his door .. the one person who
waited for him to come outside was shot immedietly. The people there
for what was thought to be a stupid old friend fight were killed and
attempted to be murdered for someones self satiafaction.. a brother n
son is gone.. and all mike can do is make excuses. I cant wait till the
truth comes out and his life is it destroyed. Like eveeyone elses. A
cowards heart will beat while someone he claimed.a friend stopped..
possibly another.. another shot.. another narrowly escaping something
they thought was a joke.. an invited contest over whatever he thought
was worth fightong over.. im sorry, murdering
He didn’t remove the post from his Facebook wall the State Police did.
oh I get it, the next time I have a surgery and I get precribed narc’s, I should go right to the suboxone to help with the pain. Life is full of pain, people. What is it with these people that think that pain free is an option? I get it that debilitating pain is no joke and should be dealt with, I am just wondering how bad this guys pain really was. Seen alot of people pee and moan about even the slightest bit of discomfort.
Flashback to 1997 when 5 men were murdered in Portland in quite similair manner.
Details of your above comment. Mr. Sabino is a free man. And to clarify it was three men.

should’ve got macco
Now that’s funny:)
In 1997 in Portland, a guy shot and killed 4 acquaintances who came to his house late at night, after threatening him on the phone. He shot them (at least one in the back) as they were attempting to flee, and was acquitted of all charges in the subsequent trial. Maine case law seems to be quite clear that you are permitted to kill people on your property if you have any sort of reasonable fear that they mean to do you harm, even if they are unarmed, even if they turn tail and try to run away after they see that you are armed… Sort of like Florida, no?
Your post won’t last long. Anti gun people don’t really like Maine’s Castle law. Florida is a great place to live and Georia may even be better. Thank goodness we pro gun advocates have the NRA to fend off the challenges to gun rights in the US. Actually, I’m kind of liking the SCOTUS, they are doing a really good job supporting the second amendment. And a thank you to the POTUS is also due. He has been the greatest salesman in US history.

? Should have put it on his credit card ?… And if anyone buys ” the bad paint job ” story …???
Talk about censorship lol Flag every post that might lead to a bit more public knowledge about how things work in the REAL world.
Honset people would use small claims court
Honest people wouldn’t be showing up at someone’s house at 4:30am with a bunch of friends to settle any disputes either.
4:30 a.m. you show up at someone’s house totally unaware of the time of day and not expecting anything unusual to happen?
This story does not add up.
** Alleged “victim”**
This is typical moronic, misguided, back woods behavior that makes Maine very special to me. I’m sure that all of the parties involved aren’t nuclear physicists working as vehicle detail artists.

Sounds like he still has a drug problem.
And do you suppose he has ADHD as well?
Didn’t have to do with a vehicle. Had to do with a guy scared he was going to get his @ss beat by a group of guys showing up at his house at 4:30 in the morning.
I hear that McKinney was arrested for drugs in the parking lot of the Moose Lodge…anyone know if that’s true?
No, he was buying some moose knuckle
