DOVER-FOXCROFT – Colleen Estelle (Allen) Glidden, 91, went to join her beloved Wendell, March 21, 2012.
She and Wendell Newton Glidden Jr. of Dover-Foxcroft shared a loving marriage from 1940 until Wendell’s death in 1987. Colleen spent the last years of her life in Dover-Foxcroft, and was a member of Dover-Foxcroft Congregational Church. Colleen joined the Naval Reserve during World War II and worked at the U.S. Navy Yard at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William O. Allen of Dexter, proudly displayed a star insignia at their home in honor of her service and in support of all service personnel in the Pacific Fleet. She made the dangerous voyage from San Francisco to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, aboard the SS Wisconsin shortly after the Dec. 7 bombing to join Wendell, who was already stationed there. Together they celebrated the first V-J Day, Sept. 2, 1945, in Honolulu.
Colleen is survived by her sister, Ruth Perkins of Penobscot; and brother, Harold Allen and his wife, Eleanor, of Searsmont. She will be missed by her daughter, Nancy A. Suppes and husband, Bruce, of Stockton Springs; son, Barry A. Glidden and wife, Terry, of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; and son, Terry N. Glidden of Dover-Foxcroft. She was beloved Nana to Jennifer Katsoulis and husband, Greg, of Cambridge, Mass., James Melanson and wife, Sara, of Liberty, Morgan Riley and husband, Jon, of Auburn, T. Joseph Glidden and wife, Jade, of Franklin, N.H., and Zach Clough and wife, Jill, of Washington, D.C. Colleen will also be missed by three great-granddaughters, Evia, Kloe Colleen, and Annabelle; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A family graveside funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, March 29, at Gray Cemetery, Dover-Foxcroft. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations to benefit homeless veterans be made in her memory to The American Legion, Legion Riders, Post 29, P.O. Box 262, Dover-Foxcroft, ME 04426.
