ROCKPORT, Mass. — John Alberghini, one of three finalists for the job of superintendent of Rockport’s public schools, has bowed out of the race.
The Rockport School Committee interviewed the two remaining candidates for the position on Monday night. They are are Jon Bernard of Rowley, principal of North Reading High School, and Robert Liebow of Mt. Desert Island, Maine, the superintendent of Mt. Desert Island Regional School System.
Alberghini is superintendent of Chittenden East Supervisory Union in Vermont. He told Rockport School Committee Chairman Michael Kelley on Sunday night that he believed he had to withdraw his name when the principal of his district’s middle school said he planned to leave his job.
Alberghini said that he did not want to leave his district looking to fill two major positions at the same time.
“Although I am sorry we did not get to interview him, it speaks highly of his character,” Kelley said of Alberghini.

It’ll be a shame to see him go but hopefully those in charge continue as they have in making proper and effective choices for the district. They’re obviously doing something right and should be recognized for it.
I’d really hate to see Rob Liebow leave M.D.I. I’ve always known him to be a stand up guy (even if I did have to see him for Discipline when he was M.D.I.’s Vice Principal).
