AUGUSTA, Maine — A Waterville man who spent nearly 20 years behind bars for killing his mother has been sent back to prison for approaching a worker at an adult bookstore wearing just sneakers and socks.
Scott Thompson was sentenced Tuesday to six months on an indecent conduct charge and ordered to serve it after finishing a three-year sentence for an earlier burglary charge. He was free on probation on the burglary conviction when he exposed himself at the First Amendment Adult Store in Waterville in September.
Prosecutors say the 41-year-old Thompson is dangerous.
The Morning Sentinel reported that Thompson’s attorney says his client “overstepped his license.”
Thompson was convicted in April 1991 of killing his 59-year-old mother, Edith Thompson, in 1989 when he was 17. He was released in December 2008.

This guy murders his mother and is out already? THAT is what is wrong with our so-called justice system.
And he got just 6 more months? If 20 years plus 3 more didn’t teach him NOTHING will.
This loser will never be anything but a drain on and a danger to society.
He was 17 when he killed her so we’re lucky that he got tried as an adult. Otherwise, he might have been released by the time he turned 21. Judging by the amount of time he served I think his sentence was probably 25 years. I don’t think that’s enough but this is what we can expect from our Maine courts. If he had been 18 when he committed the crime I’m not sure he would get that much more time. Maybe another 5 years?
It makes a difference alsoif he was convicted of manslaughter or second degree murder. As you suggest, both of those crimes tend to max out at about 25 years. Figure that with good time about 20 percent of that sentence could be knocked down. Im assuming that he was not convicted of 1st degree murder.
The article does not say he was convicted of murdering his mother. Just killing her. He possibly could have been convicted of second degree murder or manslaughter. Given the fact that he was17 when he committed the crime then yes, it stands to reason that he would be out.
This person has spent more than half his life in prison and thus I believe that time has transformed him into someone not able to fit in with society, if he was even capable of doing so before. I believe that this man will continue to be involved in small criminal acts until he does something major, like hurting someone or killing again.
Maine needs a career criminal law and civil committment process that makes sense. While going into an adult book store naked is not a violent crime outright it does show that this man has some severe issues that very will could make him a threat to others.
A guy who is dangerous at 17, does not grow sweeter with each passing year. Clearly, they need to keep an eye on this guy because when he gets out in 3 years, he will make a pest of himself again.
Let’s see…killed mom, Strike One.
Burglary? Steeeerike Two.
Indecent exposure? Steeeeeeeerike Three!
Mr. Thompson needs to be incarcerated for twenty more years…
Wish they would, but you have the people that think we need to coddle and nurture this sicko.
I agree that this person should likely be institutionalized and not on the street. I think it is only a matter of time before he does something violent and right now he is priming himself by committing these lesser crimes. The thing is Tom, burglary is not considered a violent felony and indecent exposure is not a felony. And we have to consider that he did his time for the first crime of killing his mother. So what do we do with people like this person. In many ways Maine needs to consider a civil committment program or develop a very solid career criminal policy that keeps people like this guy off the street and away from us.
Longer. What about forever.
Sick puppy……
“overstepped his license.”
I didn’t know there was a “walkin’ around nekkid & creepy” license. Can I get one in Waterville?
Lets look at the bigger picture here. This man who has spent more than half his life in jail which means that he is likely not able to function in society at all. I fear he will continue to be arrested for smaller crimes until he again does something to hurt someone.
Correct. He may also be asking to go back …. as it’s the only life he’s known.
can we please lock him up and throw away the key…well maybe not throw away the key….let some of his partners in crime make a visit….that should take care of the problem….
Oh yeah, probation and early release really work well.
I used to do this all the time. Then one day my mother swatted my backside and told me to straighten out or I couldn’t go to kindergarten next year.
Thompson’s attorney says his client “overstepped his license.”…..License for what?
O.K. Lepage, what you gonna do with this one? Domestic Violence is you stance. This man is going to kill someone, are you going to wait until he acts or are you going to act before he acts? Can we predict the future? No, can we predict he is dangerous? Yes. If past behavior predicts future, this man is on the a road of disaster and locking him behind bars for 6 months isn’t rehab. Sorry. He will again come out more dangerous then before that is my prediction, I welcome yours Mr. Lepage.
I can imagine what you would be saying about
LePage if he had him arrested. Even if he could.
I don’t see him speaking out against this man, however he speaks very loudly about other men. Just saying, he hasn’t come forward and placed his two cents worth and it seems his two cents worth carries power. I am not necessarily against Lepage, I just think he could move things along to help keep this man behind bars. I know he isn’t the judge, or the jurors, however, when he speaks to the right people they listen.
To bad he didn’t walk in the store wearing a hoodie instead of a woodie would have made for a shorter story, with a happier ending..
That may have been what he was looking for…A happy ending!lol
Killers should be put in the same place that the person they killed is. Death is their hobby!!
This guy was clearly reformed. Why give him another 6 months?
Sorry, but it looks like this guy doesn’t like life…
Jeesh, couldn’t just stick around the house and use the Internet?
