NEWPORT – Bernice I. Woodman, 89, died April 9, 2012, at her home. She was born Aug. 2, 1922, in Hartland, a daughter of Thomas and Maude (Staples) Litchfield.

She graduated from Hartland Academy as salutatorian of the class of 1939. After working two years in the principal’s office, she married Royce Woodman. They shared 70 years together. Bernice had been employed by Rae’s General Hardware, Hartland; Medwed and Norrwock Shoe Factories, both in Skowhegan; W.T. Grant Co., Skowhegan; and First National Bank of Pittsfield. For many years, she was a member of Hartland Grange and Somerset Rural Carrier’s Auxiliary. For 19 years, she served as a town ballot clerk. Her hobbies were oil painting and cooking. Because she loved nature and wildlife, she enjoyed outdoor activities and a home on the shore of Winnecook Lake in Unity, where she lived for 10 years with her husband.

She is survived by her husband, Royce; their only daughter, Tonya Watson, both of Newport; grandsons, Wayne and wife, Melissa Watson, of Newport, and Brian Weymouth of Manchester, N.H.; three great-grandchildren, Curtis and Colby Watson, and Brandi Weymouth; a very special cousin, Ruth Woodward of Lyme, N.H.; and a loyal friend, Mary Hubbard Blakley of Oneida, Tenn. She was predeceased by her parents; and her only sister, Dorothea.

Graveside services will be held later in the spring at Pine Grove Cemetery, Hartland, with Pastor George Finnemore officiating. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal, Newport. Those who wish may leave written tributes at
