LUBEC – Mary Elizabeth Hanson of Bangor and Machiasport, passed away April 10, 2012, at Oceanveiw Nursing Home, Lubec. She was born July 17, 1919, in Somerville, Mass., to Frederick and Elizabeth Lydstone.
She was a very devoted and caring mother to her children, Jean Greaves of Bangor, Judith Purington and husband, Richard, of East Machias, and Gregory Hanson of Bangor; five grandchildren, Scott Greaves of Cherryfield, Heather Kallis and husband, Mathew, of Sanford, Gregory Greaves and wife, Nicole, of Bar Harbor, Todd Purington of East Machias, and Tara Wood and husband, B.J., of Bucks Harbor; 11 great-grandchildren, Erica and Amber Greaves, Hannah, Olivia, Isabelle and Lily Kallis, Kyle, Cole and Jaiden Greaves, Madison and Marissa Wood; one sister-in-law, Pauline Bernath of Bangor; and one brother-in-law, William Hanson of Machiasport. She was predeceased by her parents; husband, Gilbert Hanson; and sister, Dorothy Bixler and husband, Leland, of Cynthiana, Ind.
While living in Machiasport, Mary was a member of Machiasport Congregational Church and served as a clerk, also as president of the PTA, Willing Workers Club and treasurer of Pocahontas Lodge. She was secretary to the principal of Washington Academy for many years. Upon reaching semi-retirement she moved to Bangor, where she enjoyed many very interesting positions – bookkeeper at Beal College, Seafarers Expeditions and Career Center, until she retired.
At Mary’s request, there will be no visiting hours. A private committal service will be held at Church Hill Cemetery with Mr. Bill Holmes officiating.
