ELLSWORTH, Maine — A Penobscot man is facing criminal charges after allegedly crashing his vehicle while driving under the influence and then leaving the scene of the accident.

Joseph McGraw, 39, was driving on North Penobscot Road in Penobscot on Sunday evening when he apparently rolled his Jeep. But McGraw no longer was at the scene by the time Hancock County Sheriff’s Deputy Larry Fickett arrived, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office.

Fickett later found McGraw at his home, where McGraw told the deputy that he had crashed while attempting to avoid a turkey in the road but that he had no memory of events after the crash. McGraw suffered a head injury in the crash.

McGraw was summoned for operating under the influence and leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident. He was taken to Blue Hill Memorial Hospital for treatment.

  1.   so how  do we clearly know that he was impaired behind the wheel, is  it not possible that he was sober, and went home and then chose to partake in his choice of substance?  it seems that i read somewhere that people who drive intoxicated are actually better drivers than those who are sober……case dismissed

    1. Are you serious? Why don’t you talk to the family members of a drunk driver!!Would you feel the same if a impaired driver hurt or killed someone you love?If you read somewhere that a drunk driver is a better driver, apparently you haven’t been caught yet!

      1.  This defend has and will continue to be successfully used in court.   Maybe there needs to be a law that makes it a felony to drink or take medications before police arrive after an accident.  He should be charged for leaving the scene.

    2. …”case dismissed”?

Wow. With that kind of logic no wonder innocent people get killed every day by drunks.
