DOVER-FOXCROFT – Janice Shaw Stevens passed away very unexpectedly Sunday, April 15, 2012, surrounded by her loving family. She was born Feb. 14, 1935, in Washburn, daughter of William H. and Mildred (Stitham) Shaw.
Janice was proud of her “county roots,” having been raised in Washburn before settling at her family’s dairy farm in Sangerville. She spent her youth and formative years helping on the farm and participating in 4-H. She was especially good in the kitchen and it was there she honed the skills that led to her taking first place in a cherry pie contest in Washington, D.C., at age 16. She graduated from Foxcroft Academy, class of 1953. She married Floyd Stevens, Aug. 25, 1957, and together they raised a daughter and two sons. Janice was a perfect fit for her chosen career as a nurse’s aide, and she worked for 32 years for Mayo Memorial Hospital and then Mayo Regional Hospital. It was Janice’s innate goodness and desire to always put others needs before her own that made her an excellent fit for health care and also for the matriarch of her cherished family.
She is survived and will be dearly missed by her husband of nearly 55 years, Floyd; daughter and best friend, Linda S. Brown and her husband, Mark, of Hampden; sons, Jeffery A. Stevens, and Peter W. Stevens and his fiancee, Jennifer Dow, all of Dover-Foxcroft; and stepdaughter, Brenda Turcotte and her husband, Joe, of Portland. Janice was “Mimi” to eight beloved grandchildren, Kyla J. Brown of Hampden, Robert A. and James K. Stevens of Dover-Foxcroft, Danielle Stevens Fasnacht and husband, Ryan, of Pennsylvania, Jeffery M. Stevens and fiancee, Keri Brewer, of Eustis, Desirae J. Stevens and fiance, Jason Edgerly, of Dover-Foxcroft, Devyn B. Brown of Hampden and her boyfriend, Spc. Christopher V. Birt, U.S. Army, Fort Benning, Ga., and Chris Hobbs of Dover-Foxcroft. Mimi, or Gigi as she was known to Kallyn, will be remembered by 11 great-grandchildren, Kallyn J. Brown of Hampden, Jakob E. and Hunter D. Stevens of Dover-Foxcroft, Graham, Everett, Israel, Aurora and Selah Fasnacht of Pennsylvania, Brayden M. Stevens of Eustis, Brice and Korbin R. Edgerly of Dover-Foxcroft. She is also survived by her sister, Gwendolyn Bragg of Washburn; two brothers, Charles Shaw of Sangerville and David Shaw of Oregon; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; two brothers, Gary and William Shaw; as well as an infant brother, Roland.
At Janice’s request, services will be private. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to American Stroke Association, 51 U.S. Route 1, Suite M, Scarborough, ME 04074. Arrangements are in the care of Lary Funeral Home, Dover-Foxcroft. Messages of condolence and memories may be expressed at
