HOULTON, Maine — A jury in Aroostook County Superior Court began deliberating Thursday afternoon whether the man convicted of killing three people in the town of Amity in 2010 is criminally responsible for the murders.

Jurors left the courtroom just after 11 a.m., immediately after closing arguments in the State vs. Thayne Ormsby.

Ormsby was convicted on April 13 in the stabbing deaths of Jeffrey Ryan, 55, Ryan’s son Jesse, 10, and Ryan family friend Jason Dehahn, 30, all of Amity, on June 22, 2010. They were found dead about 27 hours after the killings at the elder Ryan’s home on U.S. Route 1, according to police. All three died of multiple stab wounds. Ormsby also was found guilty of arson for burning Jeff Ryan’s truck after he stole it from the murder scene.

Before the start of the murder trial, Ormsby pleaded not guilty and not guilty by reason of insanity to the charges. Because of his insanity plea, Ormsby is being tried in two phases. The jury found Ormsby guilty during the first phase of the trial last week. This week, the jury heard evidence as to his state of mind at the time of the crimes. They are now deciding whether Ormsby was criminally responsible for his actions. The jury’s decision must be based on a preponderance of the evidence rather than on reasonable doubt as it was during the criminal phase of the trial. In this phase, the burden also has been on the defense to prove that he was insane.

  1. Oh come on, he knew what he was doing – he knew enough to hide it.  He killed three people in cold blood — including a young boy who never had a chance to live his life.

    1. We really need the death penalty in this State. In this case for example, what has been done is clear. 3 People dead and he did it, what more evidence does anyone need? No chances for exoneration here!

  2. The jury will do the job they’re assigned.

I’m good with whatever decision they arrive at.

    1. wow thats kinda messed up..butmaybe im misenterpreting you?you dont think he should have to pay for what hes done?you  dont think hes legally sane when hes admitted to planning, trying to cover it up,and killing witnesses.forgive me if im misunderstanding you.

  3. the SOB was found SANE ans RESPONSIBLE!!!!!! Justice was served may he rot in prison for the rest of his life

  4. Wonder how long he will survive in the graybar hotel before he is doing time in the marble orchard?

    1. I am sure there are a few friends of the victims families that are waiting for his arrival at the crowbar hotel. definitly needs a private room its called PC.

      1. The State will save a lot of taxpaper funds by putting him in general population. Could be a short stay.

  5. May Allah have mercy on his soul. May Allah also have mercy on all those who judge. Allah Akbar, Allah Akbar. Peace be with you all.

        1. I just have to ask. Are you a born in america individual who has turned your back on true american values?cause us rednecks up heah only believe in the holy trinity god, jesus, and the holy ghost all else is to break the word of god which says to worship no other gods!!!

  6. This guys is completely crazy but sure as hell should not get off as insane if that was the case than anyone who commits a murder should get off because you have to be insane to murder someone.  This kid should get the death sentence!!!

  7. It is so nice to hear that the justice system DOES work some of the time!! Good job jurors!!!  May the victims now be able to rest in peace and their loved ones be able to feel some sort of relief that he’s been held completely accountable for his selfish, stupid, unnecessary actions on that day.  I’ll never understand what he was thinking that made him feel like he had no other choice but to kill 3 innocent people.  Now I only hope he gets what’s coming to him very fast instead of costing the taxpayers, (which include the families of the victims), a lot of money that should be spent on much more positive things.

  8. Sooooo glad that the jury saw fit to see through this guy and hold him criminally responsible for these horrible acts!!  May the families of the victims find closure and some sort of peace of mind.

  9. The only other picture I want to see of this bird is when they bring him out of jail in a body bag, one hundred and five years from now.

      1. Where was god when he did those things? Just think I can live a moral life and not get into heaven because I am agnostic.  This guy can ask for forgiveness and walk right in with open arms. I guess I am OK with that. Don’t want to go to a place where I am judged because I am not A true believer in the first place.

  10. Sounds like the jury came up with the right decision. Good work, jurors, and thank you for serving in what had to be a difficult trial (having to see the evidence and hear the facts).

I hope this brings the family members some closure. It won’t bring them back, but justice has been served.

  11. Now how old is he – so he may live another 40, 50 years in jail, at about $30,000 per year, he gets to educate himself, get a couple of degrees, get exercise, three square meals (we can go on and on) haircuts, shaves, smoke, at the total expense (and I am guestimating) 1.5 million dollars…why again do we not have the death penalty?

  12. Good, he better be tried as a criminal. I HATE how many people just get away with insanity. It takes a murder for that person to come to that conclusion? Did anyone realize anything odd in his past (or anyone else’s past for that matter)? If not, why should he or anyone else get to plead insanity?
