BANGOR, Maine — A local man was arrested early Wednesday morning after he allegedly assaulted his wife and his 16-year-old stepdaughter, according to police.

Authorities were called to a Sanford Street address at 11 p.m. Tuesday for an assault report, and when they arrived the suspect, Bertrand Cote, 34, had taken off, according to Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards.

At 3:30 Wednesday morning Cote’s wife called police and said he had returned to the home, Edwards said. Police responded and arrested him.

Cote is facing two charges of domestic violence assault. He was taken to the Penobscot County Jail, where Edwards said he remained Wednesday.

Cote faces up to a year in prison on each count if convicted.

Neither female required medical attention.

  1. Too bad the child is learning that this is how men treat women.  The cycle perpetuates…He’ll be back home with them when he gets out.

      1. Right, Perry, and in this case, it’s too bad the girl has to be witness to this violence at all.  The report did not explain the “assault” details though.  Seems there are problems in the home and whatever they are needs to be straightened out and corrected before someone gets hurt.

      2. I know not all men, and most don’t, treat women that way. What I meant was that this is the example that is being set for this young girl. She is likely to believe that this is normal and seek the same type of relationship when she is older.

  2. She & her daughter, need to keep away from him & I hope he is punished to the full extent of the law, if found guilty….which in this state will not happen, unfortunantly

  3. That must have made him feel like a man. Then they handcuffed him took him off to jail then he felt like a real man getting a free ride. Do you think he was late for work of does he even work living down there.

  4. I think there will be a protection order put in  place.  If he violates that then he’s back in jail and it goes on from there .  If I were that woman and daughter install the deadbolts put up the security lights and  I would be attending one of those firearm instruction sessions that is offered and get a permit to own a firearm and get one of those signs put on outside of my place saying   Beware This property owner is armed.     Welcome to peaceful Maine

      1. https://www.ncjrs.gov/pdffiles1/nij/grants/225025.pdf     There are places for her and dauther to seek counselling for victims of domestic violence.  The Peace Hope and Justice Project is one of them.  You can’t force someone to wake up and realize danger of going back .  Hopefully he will be in jail and then court order after that . For whatever good that does.

  5. Now this person has the second witness of a police officer and the arrest report of an actual assault to use as evidence in proving she should hold a protect from abuse from this man for her and her daughter. Strong reasonable cause.

Not just a disciplinary story from a young child under the age of consent whom the filer themselves would not consider a reliable source, and a mental evaluation with no actual results determining any issues.

Slander and defamation of character after a Temporary PFA (protection from abuse) order is dismissed still lives on…..

Is there any restitution for the victim or retribution for the filer?
