BANGOR, Maine — Bangor Hydro-Electric Co. cited high winds as the cause of scatter outages Friday night that affected nearly 1,500 customers in Hancock and Penobscot counties.

In an outage alert issued at 8 p.m., spokeswoman Susan Faloon said that the affected areas include Millinocket, Old Town and Ellsworth and that customers in many areas reported fallen trees on power lines.

Most of the 1,419 customers without power were in Hancock County, where 1,104 customers were affected. The rest were in Penobscot County.

Power was expected to be restored to most if not all of the affected customers by about 10:30 p.m.

  1. Finally!!!  A little of the money I give to the monopoly is being, well, “delivered”.  Will my bill rise to cover these outages?  I’m sure it wont go down.  Bangor Hydro loves deregulation.

    1. And I love my generator!  After the ice storm I vowed that I’d never sit through another power outage and bought a 5000 watt, then upgraded a couple years ago to an 8000 watt electric start.  Best money I ever spent.

  2. We need to quickly call in First Wind to tap this natural resource.  There must be a source of immense power in order to topple transmission lines.  Strengthen the poles and place wind turbines and solar voltaic collectors on top of the poles.  Some people think that we have to suck every available source of energy regardless of extremely high costs and without any practical engineering features.  Dams at least help control floods, create recreational ponds, and provide a source of irrigation water and technology has advanced sufficiently to allow for effective fish passage and resource management.
