PORTLAND, Maine — A Windham man convicted last month in Cumberland County Superior Court of photographing his sexual abuse of a 4-year-old girl he was babysitting and possession of child pornography was sentenced Friday to 32 years in prison.

A jury convicted Nicholas Gladu, 28, on 68 counts — one count each of unlawful sexual contact, sexual exploitation of a minor younger than 12 and visual sexual aggression against a child between August and October 2010, as well as 65 counts of possessing sexually explicit materials, according to a previously published report.

Gladu was sentenced to 28 years with all but 22 suspended on the unlawful sexual contact charge, Jennifer Ackerman, assistant district attorney for Cumberland County said Monday. In addition, he was sentenced to five years for possession of sexually explicit material that involved still photographs and five years for possession of sexually explicit material that had been recorded on video.

Superior Court Justice Thomas Warren ordered that Gladu serve the prison terms consecutively. The judge also sentenced Gladu to 18 years of probation.

Gladu pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

To be sentenced to prison, the jury had to have found him not only guilty of committing the crimes but also criminally responsible for them and sane at the time they took place.

If the jury had found Gladu not responsible for the crimes due to insanity, he would have been sent to the Riverview Psychiatric Center in Augusta until he was deemed fit to be released by hospital staff.

Gladu was charged in February 2011 after a memory card was found with photographs of the assault and child pornography he had downloaded from the Internet, according to a previously published report.

Conditions of Gladu’s probation include no contact with children under the age of 16, no possession of sexually explicit materials, and sex offender treatment, according to the Portland Press Herald.

State law requires that he register as a sex offender for life after he is released from prison.

    1. Tom why would you not want to see him out in general population in prision….there aren’t any 4 year old girls in there!

    2. actually, if he goes to the state prison in warren child molesters are in general population now, there are too many of them to keep them in segregation anymore :( I know this because I am related to a couple of people that work there…..

    1. Nice to hope, but he will be put in protective custody and live a better life than most other prisoners with private exercise time, private dining ,etc.

        1. You’re right, MSP (nor any other DOC facility in Maine) does not have a PC unit anymore. Though it’s nice to know that this person will have to be in GP with other inmates that don’t like his crime, it is hard on the staff because the staff still have a duty to protect this guy, no matter what they think of his crime. Knowing how the sentence structure usually is for this type of crime, this must have been especially heinous for the judge to hand down this much time. I can only hope that the child gets the help she will need as well as the family so they can have productive lives and forget about this monster.

  1. Too bad we cannot send this guy to a prison in Mississippi, where they know how to treat slime like this. Some how knowing he will be in the Warren prison watching cable T.V. Ordering food from the canteen, in an air condition cell just does not seem to fit the crime.

    1.  Actually too bad we couldn’t send him to a Mexican or Russian prison. There the prisoners get treated like prisoners. Watch Locked Up Abroad on the Discovery Channel. This is how our prisons should be run!

  2. The saddest part of this whole deal is that the child and her family are sentenced for life. The little girl will need therapy all her life to deal with what happened. In my eyes, the punishment should fit the crime. The man that did this should suffer everyday and be in agony like his victim. He should be allowed this option or the option of lethal injection. If I were the judge, I would not waste another taxpayer dollar. The average cost per inmate is 40000 per year.  That is 1.2 million for the length of his sentence. He should be injected and 1/2 of the money saved given to the victim.

  3. What an awful crime. This man should never see the light of day again. This poor baby will have to deal with this for the rest of her life.

  4. Another sentence that almost fits the crime.  Are our bleeding heart judges finally getting the message that we are fed up with giving these pedophiles slaps on the wrist?
