BANGOR — The Husson University Eagles defeated the Thomas College Terriers on Sunday to emerge from the losers’ bracket and claim their fourth consecutive North Atlantic Conference softball championship.
The Eagles (33-11) took the first game 6-0 and won the second game 9-1 in five innings.
On Saturday, Husson topped Castleton State 4-0 and Thomas defeated Castleton 3-1.
In Saturday’s first game, Kelsey Crowe pitched a complete game for 14-26-1 Thomas, allowing one run on six hits with eight strikeouts. Alei Collier singled twice while Crowe added an RBI single.
In Saturday’s second game, Becca McCarty tossed a five-hit shutout with nine strikeouts for the Eagles. Lona Sargent collected a double, two singles and three RBIs. Courtney Hill had three singles while Brianna Webster had a double, a single and an RBI.
In Sunday’s first game, McCarty pitched seven innings, allowing five hits and one walk, to earn the shutout for Husson. Victoria Overlock singled twice and drove in two runs. Heidi Shaw had two singles and an RBI while Sargent and Hill added two singles apiece.
Lauren Hachey singled twice for the Terriers.
In Sunday’s second game, McCarty earned the five-inning win for the Eagles, giving up one run on two hits. Overlock tripled, doubled and knocked in three runs. Webster hit a two-run double while Heidi Shaw had an RBI double.
Samantha Moore and Hachey each singled for Thomas.
UMPI wins two
At Presque Isle, Krista Coffin fashioned a three-hitter in an 8-2 opening-game victory Sunday to help the University of Maine-Presque Isle softball team take two of three games from the State University of New York-Canton.
The Wildcats took game two 8-7, but SUNY Canton won the finale 6-1.
In Game 1, Kellie Peers knocked in three runs with three singles and Lainey Herring doubled and singled with three RBIs for the Owls (14-21).
Emiley Walters doubled and singled to pace the Roos (8-24).
In Game 2, UMPI overcame an early 6-0 deficit to earn the win. Desiree Smith paced the offense with a triple, a double and a single and two RBIs. Peers singled and plated three runs to back winning pitcher Courtney Bishop.
Walters homered and singled and Jena Cryderman provided two singles and two RBIs to lead SUNY Canton.
In the third game, Heather Lottie spaced five hits to help the Roos salvage a game. Cryderman plated two runs wtih a double and Walters singled twice for the winners.
Herring singled and scored a run for UMPI.
Maine sweeps UMBC
At Kessock Field in Orono, Brynne Davis singled and scored on Jennifer Eberhardt’s one-out sacrifice fly in the seventh inning Sunday to lift the Black Bears to a 1-0 victory and a sweep of their three-game America East series against the Retrievers.
UMaine (15-26-1, 6-7-1 AE), which swept Saturday’s doubleheader 7-1 and 6-1 in six innings, clings to fourth place in the league standings in an attempt to qualify for postseason play.
Ashley Kelley and Kylie Sparks (3-8) combined to pitch the shutout for the Bears, each allowing four hits. Davis, EmJ Fogel and Jessica Burk hit singles in the seventh for UMaine to set up the game-winning sac fly.
Davis finished with three singles, while Fogel and Burk posted two singles each.
Katrina Gaar singled twice for the University of Maryland Baltimore County (19-28, 1-14 AE) to support losing pitcher Katie Ferguson.
On Saturday, Kristen Koslosky knocked in two runs in each game to propel UMaine to the sweep.
In the opener, Burk and Dagmar Ralphs each doubled and single with an RBI for the Bears. Fogel doubled and singled and Koslosky doubled to support starter and winner Kelley (7-11).
Jessica Warner doubled and singled for the Retrievers.
In Game 2, Koslosky had a triple to help lead UMaine to victory. Burk (double, single) and Fogel (two singles) each drove in two runs, while Eberhardt posted a triple, two singles and an RBI and Lindsey Jenkins three singles.
Beth Spoehr scattered six hits to earn the win.
Angela Yannone doubled and singled for UMBC.
Saint Joseph’s wins title
At Wenham, Mass., Theresa Hendrix pitched a four-hitter Sunday, lifting the Monks to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference championship with a 6-2 victory over Emerson College.
Saint Joseph’s of Standish had advanced with Saturday’s 6-1 semifinal win over Emerson.
On Sunday, Hendrix struck out three and walked three while going the distance. Lindsay Moore powered the Monks with three singles and two RBIs, while Maddie Kluna singled twice and knocked in two runs and Maria Labbe added two singles and an RBI.
Bianca Buono posted two singles and an RBI for Emerson to support losing pitcher Alexandra Magistro.
On Saturday, Rae-Marie Copan spread out five hits to help the Monks reach the final.
Hendrix belted a home run and a double good for two RBIs and Emily Leverone smacked a solo homer for Saint Joseph’s.
Shannon Torosian and Nikki Delaney hit doubles for Emrson. Buono had an RBI single.
Colby, Trinity split
At Hartford, Conn., Lindsay Peterson rapped a clutch, two-run double Saturday during a four-run sixth inning that lifted the Mules to a 4-3 victory in the first game en route to a NESCAC split against the Bantams.
Trinity won the second game 7-0 behind Lindsay Gibbons’ one-hit shutout that included a strikeout and no walks.
In the first game, Aimee Polimeno earned the win on the mound, allowing six hits in 6 2/3 innings. Megan Michie got the final out for the save.
USM drops four games
The Huskies failed to score a run over the weekend, dropping a doubleheader against Eastern Connecticut on Saturday by identical 9-0 scores, then falling 8-0 and 4-0 Sunday to Western Connecticut.
At Gorham on Saturday, Molly Rathbun pitched a three-hitter in the first game and worked 2 2/3 shutout innings in the nightcap for ECSU (36-1).
Priscilla Alicea stroked two doubles and a single with two RBIs for the winners. Arielle Cooper homered and singled with two RBIs.
Katie Davis hit two singles for the University of Southern Maine (4-36).
In Saturday’s second game, Mattie Brett doubled twice to propel ECSU’s 11-hit attack. Davis doubled and single and Kayle DeMillo added two singles for USM.
At Danbury, Conn., Magen Dargon worked 11 scoreless innings in Sunday’s twinbill to lead Western Connecticut to the sweep.
Jackie Zilnicki plated three runs with two singles to pace the winners, while three players had singles for the Huskies.
In Sunday’s finale, Danielle Basciano plated three runs with a double for WCSU. Dargon fired a four-hitter with eight strikeouts.

Bates 4, Bowdoin 2
At Brunswick on Saturday, the Bobcats’ Kristen Finn allowed seven hits and two runs to outduel Polar Bears pitcher Meliss DellaTorre (seven hits, four runs).
Karen Ullmann, Leah Maciejewski and Alayna Garbarino contributed run-scoring singles for Bates College of Lewiston (18-10).
Men’s Lacrosse
MMA 22, Johnson State 4
At Castine on Saturday, Andrew DiSalvo registered six goals and dished out two assists as Maine Maritime Academy cruised past Johnson State in a North Atlantic Conference quarterfinal game.
The 6-8 Mariners play New England College in the NAC semifinals on Wednesday.
Brian Corain scored three goals and grabbed two assists for Maine Maritime. Tom Houle and Alex Hermes scored three goals apiece. Nicholas Betti and Cameron Wyman each had two goals. Bronson Guimond added one goal and five assists. Gavin Cote, Oscar Adams and Erik Milles combined for three saves on seven shots.
Alex Petti netted two goals for 4-9 Johnson State. Matt Dekens stopped 25 of 47 shots.
Husson 14, Lyndon 1
At Bangor on Saturday, Mitch Heaps scored four goals and assisted on three others as Husson University defeated Lyndon State College in a North Atlantic Conference quarterfinal game.
The Eagles (11-7) play Castleton State in the NAC semifinals on Wednesday.
Ben Landry netted three goals and picked up two assists for Husson. Chris Pelletier and Ben Potter scored two goals apiece. John Hooper III made five saves on six shots.
Luke Norman-Lacroix scored the lone goal for Lyndon State. Matt Reynolds stopped 13 of 27 shots.
Baseball
Monks win title
At Castleton, Vt., top-seeded Saint Joseph’s College of Standish captured the Great Northeast Athletic Conference championship Sunday with a come-from-behind 7-6 victory over fourth-seeded Suffolk University.
On Saturday, the Monks (35-5) defeated No. 3 Anna Maria College 6-3 in a semifinal game.
In that contest, Dan Brown broke a tie in the eighth inning with a squeeze bunt to score what proved to be the winning run. Alex Lorenc led Saint Joseph’s with a solo home run, two singles and two RBIs. Joe Coyne added two singles and three RBIs.
In the championship, tournament Most Valuable Player Nic Lops hit a two-run single in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Monks to the victory.
Saint Joseph’s rallied from a four-run deficit and scored five runs in the ninth. Dan Achorn hit a two-run single and Nate Martin scored on a sacrifice fly by Coyne.
Lops and Coyne each finished with a double, a single and two RBIs. Achorn posted a double, a single and an RBI.
Tyler Lavarriere, Alex Valenti, Lorenc and Lops were named to the All-Tournament team.
Husson, Thomas ousted
At Castleton, Vt. on Saturday, Husson University of Bangor and Thomas College of Waterville were eliminated from the North Eastern Athletic Conference tournament.
The Eagles were ousted by eventual champion Castleton State 10-0 while Thomas was defeated by Colby-Sawyer 4-1 and Castleton State 8-2.
In the early game, Tyler Erickson pitched a four-hit shutout with seven strikeouts and no walks to lead 29-15 Castleton State. Joe Borowski went 4-for-5 with three runs scored to pace the Spartans.
Niko Ververis led the 19-18 Eagles with two doubles and a single.
In Thomas’ first game, fourth-seeded Colby-Sawyer erased a one-run deficit with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning and held on for the win. Andy Lapple doubled and singled with an RBI.
Tom Cameron hit three singles to pace the 25-17 Terriers. Cody Vigue and Wes Perreault added two singles apiece.
In Thomas’s second game, Castleton State never trailed and used a four-run fourth inning to advance to the championship game. Patrick Riley pitched nine innings, allowing two runs on six hits. Ryan Zielinski hit two singles and knocked in three runs.
Cody Vigue hit a solo home run for the Terriers. Ethan Hurley chipped in with two singles.
USM sweeps Keene
At Keene, N.H. on Saturday, the University of Southern Maine moved into first place in the Little East Conference with a doubleheader sweep of Keene State.
The Huskies (19-16) won the opening game 9-6 and took the nightcap 6-3.
In the opener, Tucker White broke a tie in the eighth inning and put the Huskies up for good with a two-run single. David Ricker hit a home run, a double and a single. Forrest Chadwick hit two solo home runs while Brett Barrett had a two-run double and a single.
Nick Vita hit two singles and drove in three runs for Keene State.
In the nightcap, Ricker sparked a Southern Maine rally with a two-run home run in the sixth inning. The Huskies added three more runs in the eighth and one in the ninth. White hit a two-run home run and a single while John Carey had a double and a single.
Peter Burgio led Keene State with a double, two singles and an RBI.
Bates sweeps Colby
At Waterville on Saturday, Bates College of Lewiston scored six runs in the seventh inning en route to a 7-2 victory over Colby College in the first game of a doubleheader.
The Bobcats completed the sweep with a 7-4 win in the second game.
In the first game, Bates (20-15) capitalized on three Colby errors in the seventh inning and used three hits, an intentional walk and a sacrifice fly to score six runs. Tom Baroni pitched a complete game, allowing one earned run with no walks. Kevin Davis had a double, two singles and an RBI.
Brady Hesslein pitched into the seventh inning for Colby (16-16), giving up one earned run and one walk. Mike Mastrocola had a solo home run.
In the second game, Mekae Hyde was 3-for-4 with a double, two singles and an RBI for Bates. Ryan Curit hit a two-run home run and a single while Mike Ciummei had a double, a single and an RBI.
Taro Gold led the Mules with two doubles and three RBIs.
Bowdoin sweeps Tufts
At Brunswick on Saturday, Bowdoin College rallied to score five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and earn an 8-7 win over Tufts University in the first game of a doubleheader.
The Polar Bears (21-14) won the second game 4-2.
In the first game, Sam Canales hit an RBI single to drive in thewinning run for the Polar Bears. Dan Findley finished with three RBIs. John Lefeber and Oliver Van Zant each doubled and singled. Jordan Edgett chipped in with an RBI double.
In the second game, Tim Welch pitched six innings for Bowdoin, allowing one run on two hits with one walk. Duncan Taylor collected two singles. Cole DiRoberto and Edgett each hit an RBI single.
UMPI drops two
At Presque Isle on Saturday, the State University of New York at Canton scored eight runs in the third inning en route to a 17-11 victory over the University of Maine-Presque Isle in the first game of a doubleheader.
SUNY Canton won the second game 9-3.
In the first game, the Roos (7-25) built a 17-0 lead and held off a late UMPI rally for the win. Jared Marckese hit three singles and knocked in four runs.
Presque Isle sent 15 batters to the plate in the seventh inning, scoring 11 runs on seven hits. Stephen Thorne was 3-for-4 with three singles and two RBIs. Justin Bergeron and Ryan Thompson each hit a two-run double. Cam Morrell added a double, a single and an RBI.
In the second game, Canton scored four runs in the third and added five more in the fourth. Marckese led the Roos with a double, a single and an RBI.
Carlos Villora hit an RBI double for the Owls (10-24). Jordan Duffy chipped in with two singles.
