WINDHAM, Maine — A Standish man was seriously injured when he was hit in the eye with a birdshot pellet while turkey hunting with his son Monday morning.
Joseph Kennedy, 61, was hunting off Anderson Road in Windham with his son Kevin Kennedy, 29, of Westbrook around 9:45 a.m. when the pair split up to stalk two turkey flocks, according to a Maine Warden Service press release.
After hearing a gunshot, Kevin Kennedy began walking in the direction of the shot. While walking, he saw two turkeys and fired three shots, according to the release.
Kevin Kennedy unknowingly shot toward his father, who was in a nearby wooded area, Maine Warden Service spokesman John MacDonald said.
A birdshot pellet became lodged in Joseph Kennedy’s left eye and he was taken to Portland for eye surgery.
Joseph Kennedy has been blind in his left eye since birth, according to the release.
Maine game wardens are looking into the incident, which remains under investigation.

Bad eye or not. That had to hurt!
Well of course he got hit in his blind eye. He couldn’t see it coming to get out of the way!!!
Aye aye!
Can you imagine if it had been his seeing eye?! Glad for both of them it’s not and I hope they get to hunt together again
So he was walking toward his father and fires 3 shots at 2 turkeys.
This guy needs some hunter safety training. Especially turkey hunting safety and technique.
Split up to stalk was the first mistake.
Come hunt the turkeys in my yard. They are so tame that you can walk up and grab one. No need for dangerous weapons. Turkey poop everywhere. They aren’t even afraid of my Golden Retriever.
Flocking Turkeys!
Here’s a case in which turning a blind eye was most likely a good thing…..
What is a person with one blind eye doing walking around with a gun in his hands? Does this really make any sense at all?
