AUGUSTA, Maine — U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe told a roomful of leather-clad motorcyclists they may look tough on the outside, but on the inside they’re a compassionate bunch.
The Maine Republican joined other top elected officials Wednesday at the Blaine House for an annual motorcyclists’ tea. Snowe said the United Bikers of Maine’s annual toy run makes a difference in children’s lives and it shows that tough-looking bikers really have a heart.
Snowe and her husband, former Gov. John McKernan, who also attended, have participated in many of the past toy runs. Snowe’s been on the bikers’ side on the issue of not requiring motorcyclists to wear helmets.
Also greeting several dozen bikers were Gov. Paul LePage and Maine Democratic U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud, who also thanked the group for its charity work.
They shouldnt have to wear helmets. I figure if you are adult enough to get a license to ride a bike, than you should be able to make that decision as well…just as the normal American citizen should be able to make the decision to wear a seat belt, which unfortunately Ms. Snowe did not agree with….Please enjoy your million dollar retirement Olympia, we certainly wont miss you.
Ya they do not need helmets . Why should drivers need sea buckles. I think it is far more dangerous to put a 5 year old on the back of a motorcycle than it is a car even without a seat buckle .

did you know? in maine there are hundreds of former motorcyclists that were not wearing helmets and were severely brain injured in crashes , that are now ‘wards of the state of Maine’ . That MAINE TAXPAYERS are now paying for. Hundreds. They are living in medical care facilities and nursing homes. Some of these patients are costing over $100,000 a year to keep alive.
Just exactly how many is ” hundreds ” ?
I wonder how many automobile accident victims are unfortunately in that same situation?
Not nearly as many as a percentage of miles driven.
You know why there are so many motorcycle accidents that because the police do not do there job . they find at the accident seen that it was the fault of the person driving the car but guess what do charges filed so that tell people that its open season on motorcycles . The only way they mite an i mean mite file charges is if someone was killed .
