BANGOR, Maine — Efficiency Maine is offering Mainers a $50 incentive to recycle their old refrigerators and freezers.
Available statewide, Efficiency Maine’s refrigerator recycling program provides the labor and transportation free of charge, on top of the $50 incentive. In addition, people taking part in the program can save as much as $250 a year on their electric bills, Efficiency Maine said in a press release.
A recycling crew showed up Wednesday morning at Stacy Thompson’s residence on Randolph Drive in Bangor to haul away an old garage refrigerator.
“We’ve been looking for a way to save on our electricity bill,” Thompson said. “The minute we unplugged that old fridge, we started saving money. It was so easy to have our old unit picked up, earn the rebate, and reduce our household energy consumption.”
People can call 1-866-376-2463 or visit efficiencymaine.com to schedule an appointment to have an older refrigerator or freezer picked up. The check for $50 arrives in about four to six weeks.
“What’s nice about this program is that you can earn a rebate without investing any of your own money. You get a $50 check up front and then you save every month on your electric bill,” said Efficiency Maine Residential Program Manager Andy Meyer.
Efficiency Maine is a quasi-state agency that is funded through electricity bill surcharges and various federal dollars.
So where does the replacement refrigerator come from?

This is great news, better then seeing my neighbors junking them on their front lawns like they usually do. Will they also give a check for the fridges and freezers that are already on the front lawns rusting away for 30 Years?
If Efficiency Maine gives you a rebate check, how come the check comes from Massachusetts?
