PORTLAND, Maine — Maine police say tear gas was used to end a standoff with a man accused of shooting a woman in the chest from his Portland apartment.
Police Lt. Gary Rogers says the suspect surrendered Saturday night. Brian Kelley was charged with elevated aggravated assault, reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon and creating a police standoff.
The 48-year-old Kelley was in custody and wasn’t immediately available for comment.
Police say the woman was walking down a street Saturday morning when the suspect shot her. She suffered injuries that were not life-threatening. At first, police thought she was shot with a rifle, but it was determined that the gun fired pellets, not bullets.
The shooting took place while 200 students took their SATs at nearby Portland High School, which was briefly put on lockdown.
Prayers to the victim….I dont think those students minds are on their SAT’s right now..Thats a whole lot of extra stress on them. I think the school should reschedule the SAT’s when all is said and done.

Right now I don’t think anyone cares about the SATs. Prayers to the victim and to anyone in the area.
The school can’t just reschedule them as the collegeboard dictates “official” SAT days. The students can retake them in June any way (or wait until the fall). This is very unfortunate for them, but the primary focus of course is on the woman who was shot.
This is why access to guns should be more limited. Please try and explain the 2A to the victim’s family…

I say with the growing number of nuts out there (bath salts idiots, etc), you call 9-1-1, I will take my chances with the .357 Magnum…….or 9mm, or the other 9mm, or maybe the .40 cal
I agree with tjones4. There are too many crackheads, home invaders, and lunatics running amok…most with bad intentions. Invade MY home with a gun or knife, and they’ll be dragged out in a body bag. The shooter is OBVIOUSLY not a law-abiding citizen and should be dealt with. The other MILLIONS AND MILLIONS AND MILLIONS of LAWFUL gun owners didn’t do anything illegal today (or any other day for that matter).
PS. A pellet gun isn’t a firearm.

I always love the “explain your rights to the victims family” routine (as if I should be ashamed about my rights) , seemingly trying to provoke some kind of emotional response. If I wanted to play that game, I could easily tell you to explain gun control to people who have been disarmed and brutalized by their own governments. Sure I could explain the second amendment to the victims family. I would also explain that, in no way, do any of our founding documents promote or condone the criminal or negligent use of a firearm (or any object for that matter).
A damn pellet gun. They brought snipers, taped off areas, brought in ALL kinds of cops. For a PELLET gun? We used to shoot people as kids with BB’s, and when caught, we’d get out asses kicked by our parents. Maybe the PPD is practicing for a REAL threat (a Barett 50 BMG). The PPD response to THAT would HAVE to be a Tomahawk Cruise Missle. C’mon. Some jerk-off with a pellet gun…REALLY? Damn cops need a hobby. Try knitting.
And when the call came in that someone was shot in the chest on the street from a window, did the police magically know it was a pellet gun? What if it wasn’t? What if the shooter was settling in to pick multiple random victims off the street? It’s not TV.
If you’d been the one shot in the chest while walking down the street, I’m sure you’d have called the police on your cell phone and said, “Hey don’t sweat it, it’s just a pellet gun.”
A pellet gun can cause serious damage to someone. I do hope you realize that don’t you. I’m not saying that 911 was the right answer for this problem but, the police should have been notified of the shooting. Yes I realize that guns do not harm people, people harm people because they have bad intentions. I do not believe however, that stricter laws are the answer. Enforcement of the laws we have should suffice.
I think you need to get a hobby and let the police do there job!

well. whether it was a pellet gun or an actual firearm the ppd done well. now its the courts turn to tighten the rope on this loser and send a message loud and clear. idiots like this is what gives us law abiding gun owners a bad rap. i hope they lock him up for a good 5 yrs no probation. an added feature would be to let the lady he shot have a few shots at him as well.. this state needs to stop playing games with criminals and make it hurt.. good example is the texting while driving fine, what a joke, they pay more for the phone then the fine! imo, 1st offense,,,1k fine, loss of license for 1 yr.. 2nd offense- 5k fine, 5 yr loss of license. 3rd offense- mandatory 5 yrs in jail and total revocation..
There were also kids at the Salvation Army building which was closer to 19 Cedar St who were in lockdown until the standoff ended. One of them was my daughter who rode down from Bangor Corp for a talent show. I am a little annoyed that the police chose to leave the younger kids in lockdown while evacuating the rest of the area. Yes I know it was a pellet gun but in the non-knowing hours of sitting at home waiting for this to end so my kiddo could come home it was terrifying. Granted the kids were in a locked building and told to stay away from the windows but still.
