WASHINGTON — Equivocal no longer, President Barack Obama declared his support for gay marriage on Wednesday in a historic announcement that instantly gave the polarizing social issue a more prominent role in the 2012 race for the White House.

The announcement was the first by a sitting president, and Republican challenger Mitt Romney swiftly disagreed with it. “I believe that marriage is between a man and a woman,” he said while campaigning in Oklahoma.

Gay rights advocates cheered Obama’s declaration, which they had long urged him to make. Beyond the words, one man who married his gay partner in Washington, D.C., was stirred to send a $25 contribution to the president’s campaign. “Making a contribution is the best way to say thank you,” said Stuart Kopperman.

Obama announced his shift — he once opposed gay marriage but more recently has said his views were “evolving” — in an interview with ABC in which he cited a blend of the personal and the presidential.

He said “it wouldn’t dawn” on his daughters, Sasha and Malia, that some of their friends’ parents would be treated differently than others, and added that he had thought of aides “who are in incredibly committed monogamous same-sex relationships who are raising kids together.”

He said he also thought about “those soldiers or airmen or Marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf, and yet feel constrained even though now that ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ is gone because they’re not able to commit themselves in a marriage.”

The president said he was taking a personal position, and aides said he continues to believe that marriage is an issue best decided by states.

He spoke on the heels of a pair of events that underscored the sensitivity of an issue that has long divided the nation.

Vice President Joe Biden said in an interview on Sunday that he is completely comfortable with gays marrying, a pronouncement that instantly raised the profile of the issue. White House aides insisted the vice president hadn’t said anything particularly newsworthy, but gay rights groups cited Biden’s comments in urging the president to announce his support.

On Tuesday, voters in North Carolina — a potential battleground in the fall election — approved an amendment to the state constitution affirming that marriage may only be a union of a man and a woman.

Senior administration officials said Obama came to the conclusion that gay couples should have the right to legally marry earlier this year and had planned to make his views known publicly before the Democratic National Convention in early September. They conceded that Biden’s comments accelerated the timeline, although they added the vice president’s remarks were impromptu and not part of a coordinated effort to soften the ground for a shift by the president.

They spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal White House deliberations.

As recently as eight years ago, conservatives in several states maneuvered successfully to place questions relating to gay marriage on the election day ballot as a way of boosting turnout for President George W. Bush’s re-election.

Now, nationwide polling suggests increasing acceptance of gay marriage. In a national survey released earlier this month, Gallup reported 50 percent of those polled said it should be legal, and 48 percent were opposed. Democrats favored by a margin of roughly 2-1, while Republicans opposed it by an even bigger margin. Among independents, 57 percent expressed support, and 40 percent were opposed.

Whatever the polls, the political cross-currents are tricky, and administration officials conceded as much.

Some top aides argued that gay marriage is toxic at the ballot box in competitive states like North Carolina and said the vote there this week shows that opposition to the issue is a rallying point for Republicans.

Shifting his emphasis, even briefly, could open Obama up to Republican criticism that he is taking his eye off the economy, voters’ No. 1 issue.

Yet some prominent gay donors have said publicly they wanted Obama to announce his support for gay marriage. Other Democratic supporters claim Obama’s decision could energize huge swaths of the party, including young people. He also could appeal to independent voters. The decision also creates an area of clear contrast between Obama and his Republican rival as he argues that he’s delivered on the change he promised four years ago.

Obama touched on that in the interview.

He said he sometimes talks with college Republicans on his visits to campuses, and while they oppose his policies on the economy and foreign policy, “when it comes to same sex equality, or, you know, sexual orientation, that they believe in equality. They are more comfortable with it.”

Maggie Gallagher, co-founder of the National Organization for Marriage and a leading supporter of the constitutional amendment approved in North Carolina on Tuesday, said she welcomed Obama’s announcement at the same time she disagreed with it.

“Politically, we welcome this,” she said. “We think it’s a huge mistake. President Obama is choosing the money over the voters the day after 61 percent of North Carolinians in a key swing state demonstrated they oppose gay marriage.”

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi instantly sought political gain from the president’s announcement. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee issued an email in her name that asked recipients to “stand with President Obama.” Such requests are often followed by a solicitation for campaign donations.

In the interview, Obama said, “I have hesitated on gay marriage in part because I thought that civil unions would be sufficient.” He added, “I was sensitive to the fact that for a lot of people the word ‘marriage’ was something that invokes very powerful traditions, religious beliefs and so forth.”

Now, he said, “it is important for me personally to go ahead and affirm that same-sex couples should be able to get married.”

Obama said first lady Michelle Obama also was involved in his decision and joins him in supporting gay marriage.

“In the end the values that I care most deeply about and she cares most deeply about is how we treat other people,” he said.

Acknowledging that his support for same-sex marriage may rankle religious conservatives, Obama said he thinks about his faith in part through the prism of the Golden Rule — treating others the way you would want to be treated.

“That’s what we try to impart to our kids and that’s what motivates me as president and I figure the most consistent I can be in being true to those precepts, the better I’ll be as a as a dad and a husband and hopefully the better I’ll be as president,” Obama said.

Six states — all in the Northeast except Iowa — and the District of Columbia allow same sex marriages. In addition, two other states have laws that are not yet in effect and may be subject to referendums.

    1.  I’ve just been reading them, on CNN, you can’t make, stuff like this up. Hate, is hate.

      1. probably not, the last two amendments to the NC constitution. this year, outlawing same sex marriage, the last time, outlawing inter racial marriage. is screwing people over all they think about in NC?

  1. 20 years from now we’ll look back on the gay marriage issue with the same disgust as we look back on racial segregation.

    1. But here’s the rub:  a good chunk of the American population looks back at racial segregation with fondness, and will likely continue to do so.   Funny how people will accuse Obama of trying to “control” them with taxes and laws, yet blindly allow themselves to be controlled by the economic interests of un-elected media moguls and un-educated religious charlatans.

  2. Shouldn’t it bother all the die-hard liberals that Obama has waited until running for re-election to support same-sex marriage? Really makes it look like a cry for votes rather than a genuine endorsement.

    1. Shouldn’t it bother us no, it shouldn’t, I’ve never doubted how he stood on same sex marriage.

      1. Well, the timing is laughable in my view. The President obviously believes timing doesn’t matter to his constituents. Maybe he’s right.

        1. I think the it would make more sense to endorse this AFTER the election so as not to alienate those Democrats that don’t support SSM.

        2.  what does timing matter? He did something that could cost him much, in the way of votes. He stood up for the rights of the few. He stood up against hate, and cowardice. Anytime is the right time, in my book.

          1. and you honestly believe he changed his mind on this issue because he just had to do the “right” thing?  Remember, to the media, republicans flip flop and liberal positions “evolve”

He had gotten all he could out of the 1 year anniversary of Bin Laden’s death (which to listen to him you would have thought he was there himself).  This is just the next thing for him to talk about.

          2.  If you had read all the post, you would see, that I’ve felt this has been his stand all along.
Mr. Jones, it wouldn’t matter what he has said or done, or when he said or did it. You hate him for many reasons, and I’ll be lady enough not to list what I feel they are.

          3. speaking of flip flop.  is Romney evolving on Health Care?  Cuz I can’t wait to see how he handles that issue in the debates without flip flopping.

          4. The scariest part of your statement is that you actually believe that.

            You are naive.

If he truly believed in this cause, he would have spoken up long before now. Yet he waited,  because it is all about timing.

As for the gay marriage “issue”. I’m indifferent.
            If it is banned, fine.
If it is lawfully permitted everywhere in the known universe, fine.

Either way it is not anywhere near the most pressing issue facing this country, and only serves to distract the sheep from the more important issues.

          5. How does that hurt us non-married domestic’s? We have all the rights as the married people except should one of us die we don’t collect $298.00 in death  benefits.

          6. No, it’ll be a cold day when I pay the government money to get permission to be legally attached to someone, so the governmenrt can borrow money against “my incorporated business”.
Don’t see how N.C. banning gay marriage has any effects on hetro relationships. Did the gays include non married non gay couples in their quest for equal treatment as marrieds?

          7. I remember you now.  You somehow want those of us working for marriage equality to get equality for non-married couples who could marry if they want to.  I see these as two separate issues.

The new NC amendment doesn’t just ban the already illegal gay marriages; rather, it states that the only relationship that will be recognized by NC will be the legal marriage between a man and a woman.  This nullifies the domestic partnerships for same-sex and opposite-sex couples that were recognized in various parts of the state.  Isn’t that what you want?  Legal recognition for your unmarried relationship?

          8. What I really want to see is an end to taxation  discrimination against single people.
Legal recognition, not sure I want that,  can’t trust the government

          9. My pard and I don’t think it’s right for anyone
to decide our medical treatments. We’ve made
our families butt out and written up our own
choices. It’s asking too much of a loved one
to decide pull the plug or not.

          10. It IS important to many, but the economy is important to us all. I also was not trying to trivialize gay marriage at all, the entire point of my post was that obama was using the issue as a political tactic. All politicians do this.

          11. You do know it was the Republicans DEMANDING to know where he stood right? After Biden, republicans said Obama needs to come out with the stance of the white house. He didn’t just choose this you know.

          12. The Republicans have demanded many things from him over the past 3.5 years. What makes now so special that he would finally give in? Oh, that’s right, it’s an election year.

It’s what politicians do, all of them.

          13. It’s easy to spin the facts to prove your point when you simplify like that.

          14. Again, like they really believe that this is all the entire country is going to talk about for the next 6 months? Like they believe we have such an underdeveloped brain that we can’t worry about the economy AND discuss same-sex marriage?
I don’t think that they think that. I don’t think that this is meant to distract us from “the real issues.”
What I do know is that people do evolve. I work with an organization here in Maine on this issue and I have spoken to people who once didn’t support it and now do. Why is it that when a politician does that it’s automatically seen as calculating? Is it not possible that they, too, go through the same process? Or do you and others with the same opinion just believe that Mr. Obama is a liar no matter what he says?

          15. “Why is it that when a politician does that it’s automatically seen as calculating?”Hrm, I don’t know, perhaps because politicians are not the most trustworthy people?

Although I cannot speak for “others with the same opinion”, I don’t think everything obama says is a lie. That said, I do think he is corrupt, power hungry, and doesn’t give a rat’s *ss about the people in this country, unless it benefits him to do so.

          16. And in this regard Romney is not “corrupt, power hungry, and doesn’t give a rat’s *ss about the people in this country, unless it benefits him to do so’?

          17.  What you don’t know about me is, that I would be proud, of any President that stood up against, hate and cowardice. Not just this President.

        3. We don’t vote until freaking November. Have you seen how the news cycles work? This will have already been played out long before then.  Even Fox News will have given up on it by election time.

          1. I doubt it.  Romney certainly isn’t going to stay silent on the issue when he’s looking for those anti-gay everything votes.

    2. No. Same-sex marriage was an issue in the last election, and he publicly stated that he was in favor of civil unions but not same-sex marriage. If anything, his coming out in favor of it now might cost him votes, not gain them. Many African-Americans are heavy church goers, and are opposed to same-sex marriage but would normally vote for Obama, whereas those who already support same-sex marriage are far more likely to vote for him anyway.

      Nice try, though.

      1. Next to Roxanne Quimby, this is the issue that’s guaranteed to generate lots of posts.   Good for you, Mr. President.

      2.  I think that’s the point, that Obama may lose votes over this issue.  Having said that, the die-hard Liberals in question may believe that sticking to one’s principles is more important than winning by a massive margin.  Obama will win, either way, and this liberal-minded poster is thrilled that he’s finally doing the right thing with respect to this particular issue.

      3. Clearly this is just a ploy for Obama to get people’s mind’s off the sudden decline in Gas prices.

      4. The African-American community will support him despite this.  He will, however, solidify the young voters he counted on last time…and that’s what this was about.

        1.  I agree, I think this is about making sure the “young” vote stays w/him.  Also any Republican who is for gay rights might swing towards him – I simply wish if he’d truly been for SSM he’d have done something during his tenure and not when its in jeopardy.

          1. I don’t know that he’s truly “for” it in his heart, but no one can know that.  I believe he’s had to walk a particular tightrope with the African-American community, and he’s delayed further alienating it as long as he could.

    3. I don’t even have to begin with Romney because even Republicans know he is a flip-flopping hypocrite, one with hundreds of millions of dollars and a cold callous lack of understanding for anyone who lacks for money.

    4. Shouldn’t it bother Repubs that  Mitt is a pick-and-choose guy? That he probably has taken every position except equality? Naw, they don’t care about the economy, don’t care about jobs, don’t care about inequality. Only what goes on in the bedroom of a same sex couple.

      1. Wow! The sheep now have something they can
rally around. This guy will do anything for votes and
say anything and the sheep swoon. This guy is dividing
and taking this country into ruin and the sheep are jumping
up and down because he is “evolving”. Maybe he will soon claim
Native American heritage like Dizzy Lizzy Warren and read us
passages from Karl Marx and we will proclaim Pres forever.
As for Romney, he isn’t the greatest thing since sliced bread but
he doesn’t hate this country and isn’t a Marxist. He gets my vote.

        1. You are right.  Romney doesn’t hate his country.  He’s just a trust fund baby who has nothing in common with the working man,  but he would take care of that sheep in return for your vote!  Look at the way he saved General Motors.  Tjhey never would have made it without him. (choke, choke,Baa)

          1. Yes he saved OBAMA motors. I was a loyal General Motors customer for 35 years. Corporate greed and unmanagable  UAW labor agreements were the cause of the failure of GM, OBAMA and the do nothing congress stole the money from the rest of us working stiffs to bail out the auto industry in an effort to gain union loyalty and basically votes.  NO more OBAMA motors vehicles  in this family!! and no votes ether!

          2. Why is it that Conservs are so quick to ridicule the UAW for their “greed” and for bringing down GM and Chrysler when they know nothing about the whole situation?  How about if we criticize you for what you make?  I worked in the UAW for several years and I can tell you that they were making concessions as for back as 1985! As far as yhe bailout, they have been paying that back on time.  How about the banks that the King of the Conservatives (Dubya) bailed?  Jow much did they pay back? NOTHING.  Maybe you shouldn’t whine about what someone else makes because someday, they will take a look at what you.  It’s called turnabout.  Care to tell us how much you make?  Didn’t think so.

        2. It is funny you would say Obama would “do anything for votes and say anything” to have us “sheep” follow him. Romney swings whatever way the wind blows to get lukewarm support. One day he is a moderate the next a conservative, depending on the audience he is trying to court. Obama may not be your cup of tea, but I will at least back someone who supports American industry, who pays their taxes and does not hide behind loopholes and overseas accounts and who voices support for a segment of the population that the Repubs will not even allow to be an advisor to Romney even though they are the most qualified. I guess we will just be canceling out each others votes come November.

        3. Has anyone ever won an election based on his or her support for the gays to marry? I mean, really, do you think that this is meant to get MORE votes from people? He’s doing this to steal away Romney supporters???

        4. Wow, a sheep that can type. Sheep are people who follow no matter what, and who don’t care where they are going. That describes many Republicans and you. See, Obama has laid out a vision. You may not like it, but he says where he wants to go. Mitt, on the other hand, says one thing when he wanted to get elected, another thing after he was gov., then he changes his position again when he has to pander to the Fox viewers. So, my question is, you follow him through all his twists and turns, so who are the sheep?

So far as you writing that Obama hates this country, can you provide a quote? This is one of the lies made into history by people (sheep) like you, who don’t bother to question, only follow. I’ll bet you 10 bucks you won’t find the quote from Obama, except from the mouth of your shepherds.

    5. People’s attitude on this, as well as other social issues, can evolve over time.  Has happened with this issue and Baldacci as Cheney.

    6. That’s nonsense. After a defeat by huge margins, he’s going to come out in support of the side that loss in order to gain votes? Your theory makes zero sense.

    7. Really?  You think this is a vote-getter?  As if we die-hard liberals would be otherwise voting for…who, exactly?

No, this is a very brave move he’s making.  He’s risking losing a lot of centrists, for whom this might be a negative thing.  Here’s hoping they’ve evolved, as well.

      1.  I don’t think he’s going to lose any votes on this. People will respect him for coming out in defense of an unpopular position, and that will help him in November. Presidential elections are about the big picture.  I assure you Mitt Romney is shaking in his shoes over this announcement. It makes him look even more like what he is,  a chameleon with no conviction.

        1. I hope you’re right, but Romney has already reaffirmed his position.  Fasten your seatbelt, it gonna be a bumpy ride…

          1. Romney did sign that “pledge,” along with Bachman, Santorium, and Perry (the crazy trinity) that NOM had…. NOM, that organization that is disrespecting the laws of Maine….

    8. Shouldn’t it bother all die-hard conservatives that Mitt Romney waited until he was running for president to support….uh….everything they believe in?  Really makes it look like one cry for votes after another rather than genuine belief.

    9.  Doesn’t bother me at all….nor my two gay daughters and their partners….nor my numerous gay friends….what bothers us is that Mitt Romney is a snake in the grass…..Go Obama….get all he votes you can….you are the people’s president….not the presidential candidate for the elite….we far outnumber the elite and you will be president again…..

      1. Obama is not and never has been MY president.  The “people’s president”……….priceless.  He has done nothing.  He is a one trick pony………tax and spend, and the wealthy need to pay their fair share.

When did being wealthy become an evil thing in this country?

        1.  When the wealthy decided that they’re going to take all the lifeboats and let everyone else go down with the ship, that’s when.

          1. Yes we should follow the lefts great leader to methadone,EBT and other peoples money. The dems American dream to make everyone mediocre  not  to strive to be the best you can. That would take effort to join the producers.

        2. Actually, recent research shows wealth to be a good predictor of unethical behavior, aka “evil”.  Its funny but not unsurprising that we focus on the unethical behavior of “able-bodied welfare recipients” while the cost to society from the unethical behavior of the rich is unimaginably greater, e.g., The investment banking crisis.

          1.  Takes a lot of EBT cards buying ice cream to equal Nutting’s million dollar OOPs especially when you include the loss of the jobs he caused.

        3. the wealthy have always been an evil thing in this country dear….why do you think all those unions evolved at the beginning of the 20th century? Read up on how many wealthy hire “illegal aliens” in this country…..you think they do that out of the goodness of their hearts or because they can pay them a substandard wage and skip social security matching, unemployment taxes and workers comp insurance….grow up and look at the truth…the wealthy are using us like cattle …always have, always will…they have no idea what it’s like to not be able to see a dentist or a doctor…no idea what it’s like to wear worn out work boots for two more weeks cause your child needs something and you have to choose. Do you know how a lot of major food chains get out of offering health insurance? By only offering part-time work….Wal-Mart was known for having no health insurance cause the wages were so low people could at least get medicaid for their children…the rich work the system to their advantage and don’t give two hoots for those they employ…there is always someone else standing in line for the job…if you look at a chart of world wealth : all the countries of the world; 84 percent of the wealth is held by the rich (which are a small number compared tho the rest of the earth’s inhabitants); that leaves 16 percent for the rest of us to “share”….no wonder there is such world strife…..

          1.  the weathy do pay they fair share its the 47 percent that dont pay any that is not paying there share

          2. In order for them this 47% to pay their fair share, they would have to be making a living (taxable)wage.  Many are not making a living wage because they do not work: they are not making a living wage becasue there are no jobs which pay a livable wage.   Furthermore, the jobs there are pay peon wages so many need 2 jobs or both spouses need to work just to make enough to get by.  Businesses do not pay their employees a livable wages.  What don’t conservatives understand about this?  How about shutting Fox off?  How about using your brain?  Anyone who votes republican is anti-american.

          3. So the rich in America is static? I do believe rich are changing places with the poor daily. How about shutting off miss Maddow and getting out of your parents basement and take a look around. It is called reality

          4. Ya, those who clear over $250,000 / year have it way harder than the rest of us.  Who’s Maddow?  I don’t live in a basement.  Prejudiced much?  How about YOU facing reality?

          5. There are 89 million people out of work .  Maybe you would like to point out where we can find that many Help Wanted ads. I think the rest of that 47% are either retired or still in grade school.

          6.   Wasn’t one of the current administration’s campaign promises to create jobs?  When elected, to then merely retain jobs?  For help wanted opportunities, click here –> http://jobs.bangordailynews.com/ or scroll to the top of this page.

          7.  everyone that makes money should have to pay something not just get money from goverment lets all have some skin in the game

          8. I know someone who, this past year, made more money than ever before and was then bumped up into a 25% rate which resulted in less take home than before. Why is it that when people make more money more money is taken back?
I do think, however, that the super wealthy should not pay at a tax rate that ends up being less than the average person.

          9.  that is what the wealthy are complaining about there paying close to 50 percent in fed and state taxes is that fair to lose 1 out of every 2 dollars they make and the only rate thats lower is capitol gain which is money that has been taxed and invested and you get a return on

        4. actually, he is your president. You can deny it but the truth is, he IS your president.

          1. He is the Liberals President and they can have him .  The rest of America will elect anything to be rid of this incompetent buffoon.

          2. Obama is a centrist, he is FAR from a liberal no matter what Fox News and Rush tell you.

          3. I look forward Darkcat33 to seeing you on these post boards come November, when you are once again proven WRONG by the millions of Americans that are sick to death of being treated like second class citizens.

          4. This comment here shows how far to the right the overton window has shifted since the right-wing echo chamber has taken hold. Even moderates are called communists these days. It’s as if these words have been stripped of their original meaning and are just used as darts to squash any real discussion. Sad, really.

          5. Not mine did not vote for him and he lied to me from the start. His own words were he would be my president also.Stealing from working people to keep others on the couch is not my president.A admin that is littered with corruption, voter fraud and giving our drone technology with out an attempt to recover is not my president.Whats next is he going over to Iran to drop the keys off,get the papers signed and setup the sirius radio on the new drone.

          6.  Like it or not, he is your president, unless you want to admit to not being American?

        5. Oh I know it, George Bush rid the world of WMD’s, and left office with a balanced budget…This Obama guy is terrible!

        6. Some of the wealthy in this country became evil when they became wealthy  enough to buy the influence of our elected officials to help them become richer at the expense of the poor and middle class and unless you live in another country Mr. Obama is your President ,like it or not.
Get used to it because he will get re-elected.

          1. they’re producers? Where are the jobs then? Oh, yeah, that’s right….in China.

          2. last report was 40 thousand jobs in maine.Must be below the unemployed to accept aany of these jobs.Believe it or not it is tough to start out the boss. Most that listen to the great divider think they should get paid the same as the owner and start out that way.

        7. lets return to the top marginal tax rates under that socialist president Ronald Regan!

          1. I have worked for two small businesses run by people who poured every last cent they had into their business, using personal homes as collateral. Business owners who were and are on Mainecare. So yeah, I’ve worked for poor people before. These are people who are just keeping their heads above the water, just like their employees who are usually living paycheck to paycheck.

      2. He is not my president never voted for him never will.  He just woke up Conservatives and Independents that will now give a reason to come out and vote in November.  Most Conservatives and Independents were not motivated by having Romney who is Obama Lite on the ballot.  Now that the Emperor and Mumbles the Cusser Biden have shown us what most of us knew all the long we will do everything we can to get this awful administration out of office.  This just adds to the long list of failures from Economic Policies, Social Policies that this out of touch administration and the damage they are doing to our country.

      3. This is why not all people should vote.. Obama quoted the laws that are on the books already in his speech and you think its a revelation

    10.
“if you’re going to get married by the State, it’s a civil union, period. Whether you’re a homosexual, lesbian, heterosexual. Everybody. That way everybody gets the same legal standing.”……… Paul Lepage 2009.

    11. Nice touch. A day after the same sex marriage vote fails, Obama supports it.
I voted for him last time and will again, because the alternative is sooo much worse.
I don’t agree on lots of things he has done, but he is a little less 1% than Romney or any republican.
None are 100% what the country needs, but to go backwards now and hand the country completely back to the corporate right wing would be the end for middle class America.

      1. I understand how you feel about the “choices” provided by the US political party system.  I happen to agree that Romney’s flipflops represent greater “evolution” than Obama’s.  Handing the reins back to the political interests that dragged us in to pointless wars and economic disaster is insanity.

    12. With the amount of anti gay sentiment in this country what makes you so sure this is a political move? This has as much potential to hurt him as it does to help him. He has handed Mitt Romney a gift by solidifying his standing as a die hard conservative. The religious right and other hardcore conservatives will come out in full force against this stance. If this was a political move it was a risky one but I believe it was not  political but one made out of personal feelings.

    13. As an eventuality it was going to happen eventually, the only thing was the timing.  I’d bet the election coming up had something to do with it.  It would have been more genuine as you say if he had made his stance known after being re-elected though.  The only next logical step for him is to advocate a change in the legal definition of marriage to include not just a man and woman.

    14. As opposed to republicans who are still hardcore against it for any reason? Face it, EVERY social change embraced by the top has ONLY been because they were forced to or it would give them a political advantage.

You’re just bummed because by doing so Obama guaranteed his re-election as those who oppose gay marriage weren’t going to vote for him anyway while those on the fence about Obama will now decide to vote for him. Get used to it republicans, you represent the party of the PAST

    15. Jesus was a bleeding heart, long-haired, peace loving, anti-establishment, liberal hippie freak with strange ideas.  Everything Conservatives hate.

  3. Better late than never.  More done that Mr. Bush.  More than Romney would ever do….

  4. I could give a rip about Obama’s position on gays getting married. Whatever. It’s the Economy Stupid.

      1. Absolutely.  Now the entire nation will forget about the economy for the next 6 months.

        ~rolls eyes~

    1. Your right about about the economy, however I haven’t heard anything about an economical plan to restore Americas failed economy from the Romoney camp. The only plan Romoney most likely has is the the typical GOP theory, trickle down economics and as the majority of Americans have witnessed the trickle down theory doesn’t work. The only results of the failed trickle down economic theory is the fact that the money trickles down to China and the corporately owned U.S. politicians, while trickling up to Wall Street investors, it doesn’t create American jobs. Another thing that worries me about Romoney is the fact that while Romoney was Massachusetts governor he did nothing to change the states gun laws,to which leads me to believe that Romoney is more anti gun than pro gun and as Americas economy will continue to decline under this hypothetical Romoney administration. I think Romoney’s agenda will rapidly flop to trying to get guns out of the hands of Americas poor citizens. As far as gay rights go nothing has really changed where as states have been voting about the gay marriage issue for years now. To vote for any member of the GOP party is in essence a vote for a communist style government who’s only concern will be for the affluent society.

  5. Great to hear that the government is finally beginning to get out of people’s lives.  You’d think conservatives would have supported this long ago, but Noooooo!  They’s gots a thing about what goes on in other folk’s love lives.

    1. Todays religious and TEA party conservatives want small government unless we’re talking about minorities, women, and gays.  Then it’s big government all the way.

Not the Goldwater way, that’s for sure.

      1. Ok, what do you feel is the Tea Party’s problem with minorities and women?(abortion I assume is the women issue…what is the minority issue you refer to?)

  6. I don’t know how anyone could possibly disagree with Obama’s words on this. Get out there and meet a committed gay couple. You’ll see they’re just as good as the rest of us and they want the same things — to love and be happy.

  7. Fraught with panic because of a deplorable stint at the White House, the svelte ebony inamorata of left-leaning socialists and prurient sybarites comes out of the closet and declares the institution of marriage a trifling thing. Hubris, Pusillanimity and Duplicity are the sordid jewels of Obama’s reign, a reign that has brought disgrace upon America and soiled our integrity throughout the world. May God have mercy.

      1.  they’re trying to impress the rednecks, but forgot most of them don’t know what those big word mean.

    1. I had a chuckle at the idea of American integrity. Thanks for the laugh!

Flagged your post though, sorry. Even with the one-dollar words you crossed the line a bit there.

    2. Not at all fraught with panic, you have the Romney position juxtaposed with the Obama position. Remember, being fraught with panic prevents Mitt from answering questions about the issue. He sort of supports some civil rights that gays can have, but won’t say which.

And you don’t need to capitalize words that you are writing for the first time, pusillanimity and duplicity are not proper nouns. The first refers to the fact that Mitt has never taken any position that he defends when somebody asks about it. His position on just about everything has changed 180 degrees, and then back when an election approaches.

Duplicity. That refers to the weapons of mass destruction that we were led to believe were in Iraq when the Neocons started the trillion dollar war over there. They lied, cherry picked the intelligence we had, and told us the war would pay for itself. Now, that is duplicitous.

So far as the prurient sybarites, that would refer to you and your type. Totally enthralled with what goes on in the bedrooms of others. A Republican Party so obsessed with sex that they engage in all its manifestations while trying to ban it in their public pronouncements.

    3. Big words and fancy poetical devices and structure don’t mask your basic hate-based, misconstrued content. None of what you say, however faux erudite, holds any truth. Do love your handle, though.

    4.  I bet you thought you  confused us with those big words……may God have mercy on you for sitting in judgement….remember “judge not least ye shall be judged.”

    5.  Your god does have mercy, it’s the people that profess to follow him that don’t. Stop using that Bible to thump those that don’t feel like you do and maybe read about live and let live, not judging, and rendering unto Ceaser what is  Ceaser’s.

  8. The last time North Carolina amended it’s constitution to deal with a marriage issue; it was to ban interracial marriage.  That was wrong too.

    Well said by the president.

  9. Bill Clinton’s FIRST act when getting in office – Proposing Repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.
Obama’s desperate act for getting reelected – Supporting Gay Marriage.

A clear difference between conviction and pandering.

    1. Uh….Clinton passed Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.  Obama repealed it over a year ago.

      Your post makes no sense.

    2. Wait.  DADT was Clinton’s idea!  And he signed into law DOMA besides!

      Get your facts straight.  (hahaha)

      1. You are correct and I put repeal in by mistake.  My point is that Obama magically comes out in support of gay rights and the end of term shows that he is just pandering for voters.  Whereas Clinton, whether you liked him or not showed his support as his first major action in his first term.

        1. DADT was hardly support. It resulted in witch hunts and the continuing discharge of gays and lesbians from the military. It did far more damage than good. And again, he signed into law DOMA, something that is contrary to the full faith and credit clause of the constitution.
How do you explain Obama’s work to repeal DADT before the campaign of 2012? It is unfortunate that there seems to be a time-fram during which any action taken to support any minority group is automatically dismissed as pandering.

      1. I guess the people aren’t as distracted from the “real issues” as some here think they would be.
        Huh!

  10. “One voice can change a room, and if one voice can change a room, then it can change a city, and if it can change a city, it can change a state, and if it change a state, it can change a nation, and if it can change a nation, it can change the world. Your voice can change the world.” -Barack Obama

  11. I just think these things should be decided at the State level, the Federal Government does not need to micro manage our lives. Each State should have everyone vote on the issue and leave it at that. I’m not saying I’m against it or for it, just saying it shouldn’t be up to the Feds, they need to have less control not more.

    1. Civil rights ARE a federal issue.

You’re making the same argument people made for preventing people of different races from marrying.

The Supreme Court ruled THAT was unconstitutional.

    2. I understand how you feel, but that is not how the Constitution is written.  Perhaps I can explain a bit.

Of course the Feds should not micro manage our lives.  And in the case of Marriage Equality, the opposite is in fact occurring.  You see, the Constitution lists powers of the Federal government and the States; all others rights belong to the people.  Therefore, it is the States that are ‘micromanaging’ by attempting to limit equal protection under the law by limiting access to marriage.

      1. the way I understood it, State law is SUPPOSED to take precedence over Federal law, so the Federal Government can say it’s legal but each state can still choose to make it illegal. I realize this isn’t how our country is run right now, but that is how it is supposed to be.

        1. No. Federal law supersedes state law in many cases. There are federal laws that say that we can’t do certain things like prevent black people from voting, but that doesn’t mean that states CAN prevent black people from voting. Same thing happened with the constitutionality of sodomy laws. Finding that an action is unconstitutional on the federal level doesn’t mean that states’ constitutions can still allows that action.

  12. Was ironically pleased to read this.  One more nail to insure he does not get reelected.  America cannot afford 4 more years of Obama.  Imagine him not having to worry about reelection?  That’s the only restraint he has had to this point.  Our country will only be further divided, not unified.  Time to move on.

    1. We can’t afford the first 4 years, never mind another 4 years.

      The worst ever.

  13. Marriage is already gay. You promise never to have sex with any other women, then exchange jewlry and dance.

  14. Why would any nation that prides itself for having been founded on the principle of freedom of religion and for embracing civil rights for all, allow any religion to define civil marriage and tolerate the witholding of civil rights from any group of otherwise fully equal citizens?

    1. The problem with “freedom” and the folks that wield it is that they are always talking about “Freedom for me”, not “Freedom for you”.. hence how our founders treated Torys, native americans, Canadians, Chinese workers.. oh and Africans?

      1. Agreed, so like Doc Seus would have it, let’s say what we mean and mean what we say……..

  15. Why would this surprise anyone coming from an ultra libral wanting to get back in office. Notice how he withdrew from Iraq when it was geting close to election time, notice how fuel is falling a little.  Points that is all.

    1.  I’d like for you to explain, even if it is for “points”, as you say, how fuel prices falling, gay marriage endorsing, or pulling out of Iraq is a bad thing.  Also, if he’s looking for points, alienating the swing states (like North Carolina) with his support for gay marriage doesn’t seem like the way to do it.  But nice try.

      1. these have all of sudden happened his last year in office? It does not need to be explained. How about his about face on teh gay issue. Liberal Propaganda

  16. This has nothing to do with being for or against same-sex marriage. The President’s announcement today is solely for the purpose of once again keeping the publics attention off the real isuue fo the day, the economy. Unfortunately for President Obama and the Democratic Party, they are going to find out in November that the voters can see beyond all the smoke and mirrors.

    1. Yes, because a man who tells what he finds to be a “humorous” story about his father closing down a factory in Michigan that resulted in a large amount of layed off workers, will definitely be able to help our  economy. Unemployed people, HAHAHA, isn’t that funny?!?!?

      1. You will find out judgement day

      2.  You existence proves God exists.  Evolution can’t be proved….creation can.

        1. Evolution has been proven, and for many people, only enhances our love and relationship with God.

Why do certain aspects of science ‘threaten’ some peoples’ faith?

Even Einstein, who discovered time/space and the theory of relativity expressed his awe of the universe in terms of admiration of God.   Why do some Christians insist that strengthening the mind is weakening the spirit?

There is absolutely no Biblical support of ignorance.

          1. The reason Einstein had awe for god was he lacked the tech. Put him in a room with Stephen Hawking for an hour then ask him about god.

          2. I’m just saying the science and religion aren’t mutually exclusive.  Btw, I’m more of Brain Greene girl, myself.

          3.  Well yea, like he always says, “If the women don’t find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.”  … Wait, that might have been Red Greene that said that…

        2. You are kidding right?…going for a lot of likes I am thinking….for all our sakes

      3.  I can hear him now,……………….no, I guess maybe that was just the TV. Is that good enough?

    1. There is absolutely NO biblical text condemning homosexuality.  Yes, there are some Old Testament laws in Leviticus; but as we knowLeviticus also states that I can sell my daughter and can not eat seafood.  I think we can agree that modern Christianity has grown beyond the strict interpretation of Leviticus.

Sadly, through the centuries, people have used the Bible’s message of love and humility to justify war and torture.  And again, there are those that are using that message of love to limit civil rights to homosexual Americans.

It is my opinion that it is God’s place to judge, not yours or mine, and He is judging us based upon the love, generosity and respect we show each other.

      John 3:17.

NOWHERE in the Christian Bible is “hate the sin, love the sinner”.

          You aren’t a Christian; you’re just a bigot with a Bible you’ve never studied.

FYI, it was Ghandi that said “Hate the sin, love the sinner”.

    4. You shouldn’t presume to tell God who he hates.
God prefers kind Atheists over hateful Christians.

    1.  He has already begun his second term. It began months ago. The election is but a small inconvenience to him. He already knows he won.

Of course, no one else with a brain shares his delusion. He’s in the fight for his political life, and he’s getting desperate.

  17. I’m impressed that the President came out and told us where he stands.. About time….
May hurt him politically, but atleast he told us, Kudo’s to the president..

    1. Excuse me Gomer, he already told us where he stands.  This is a bow to political expediency that his advisers have said will HELP him politically.

      1. You would be surprised how many Democrats are against SSM… It isnt just a Republican thing…. This will be interesting come this November..

        1. and you’d be surprised how many Republicans support Marriage Equality.  It’s a civil libertarian, constitutional, less government issue.

          1. Yes-TRUE Tea party people, not the part of the party hijacked by the right-wing Christians.

  18. It is no ones business who consenting adults marry.  Certainly not the governments.

    1.  I agree with you. That being said, is this whole controversy nothing more than a canard of the present administration to be re-elected?

      1.  Since this issue will likely generate millions of dollars in anti-gay donations to the Flip Romney’s campaign I don’t see it as particularly conniving.

    1.  He repealed Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, and he backed a bill to repeal DOMA.  How has he ever been against gay marriage?

      1.  Did you read the article? I know it’s subtle but “he once opposed gay marriage… ” and it has been in every previous article regarding Obama’s opinion. Google it.

I say, get rid of government benefits associated with marriage. Make them connected directly to raising children which was the clear intent of the benefits, but has been become less and less relevant.

    2. But he was always for equal rights for gay people. The only thing that has changed is that he went from civil union to marriage. Nothing fraudulent about that.

  19. I commend the President for making such a brave stand considering how extremely right the country is going.  I also was against gay marriage some years ago…my position has changed for no reason other than common sense.  Gay marriage is not going to change my marriage. The only thing that can change that is between myself and my spouse.  Marriage should only be a commitment made between 2 consenting adults.  Everyone else including the government…stay out of it!

    1. I never thought about it that way before. Now that I DO think about it, this is the strategy that all desperate politicians employ just before they go belly-up. Pander to the gays and their enormous political clout from coast to coast!!! Sure-fire win!!!

  20. I read that in North Carolina, you can marry your cousin but not your gay cousin. LOL

  21. So the question the President just asked is ….

Are you, or are you not, a bigot?

  22. We have been married over 40 years now.  Someone else getting married does not threaten that in any way.  If there’s any threat to our marriage in society, it’s the rampaging divorce rate.  Which is exclusively heterosexuals, at this point . . .

  23. Obama said the same thing among other things when he was running the first time.. remember supporters of gay marriage, he ran on hope and change and nothing in three years have changed.. your hope is in State laws.  All Politicans run on social issues and then never do anything about them. Social issues affect the heart so it’s easy for them to lead you astray.  Good luck with him doing anything for you

    1. You forget about DADT and his work on repealing DOMA.  But blinders have a function, I guess.  Good luck with that.

  24. It’s the word “Marriage” that gets me.  I’m all for civil rights and treating each other fairly. Civil Union should be the correct term. When one uses the word” marriage” as it is and has been for centuries, it shall mean a  “civil union” between one man and one woman. Period. Civil union=man-man, woman-woman. Marriage=man-woman. As such, subject to the same protective and legal rights. Whatever any couple, be it man and man, woman and woman and as well , traditionally,  man and woman choose to do in the privacy of their own homes, I believe the majority of Americans can live with that.  America is all about freedom of choice, right? Why does the homosexual agenda have so much of a problem with that? We can all live happily ever after. Me, personally, I think it’s disgusting and morally wrong but please don’t call your homosexual relationship by the word “marriage”. I, along with a majority of Americans believe, correctly, it should be referred to as a ‘civil union”. Marriage=One Man-One Woman.

    1. You know that the marriage we know now isn’t the same as the marriage the world has known for centuries.  Really, now.    And you know that relationships aren’t about what people do in the privacy of their own home.

    2. There’s something a little sad an pathetic about people who hate gays so much that the thought of them getting married and being considered equal frightens them so much and makes them so ready to surrender to bigotry and circular logic.

At what point would you give up, if you were in love and determined to marry ?

You can only delay the inevitable, take pride in preventing that elderly gay couple from marrying before they die.  And in hurting the children and families of gay couples.

Something to be real proud of.

  25. Flip-flop, flip-flop Mr. President!  I guess we can’t accuse Romney of changing his mind for political expediency, if we ourselves do it!

      1. The political expediency I’m referring to is Obama’s need to shore up his base on the far left–many of whom are unhappy with him for not fully completing the Utopian society he promised to deliver in 2008.  And since Biden beat him to the punch in announcing his support for alternative marriage structures, he had to go public with his pronouncement earlier than he wanted to.  Since Romney has been accused of having “evolving” positions on sensitive issues, it seemed appropriate to point out Obama’s own change of position on this matter.

  26. Better late than never, and it will cost the president nothing.
He’s not going for the hate vote, unlike Romney.
The TEA party controlled GOP has all the hate-filled constituents in the bag, and unfortunately for them it only amounts to somewhere south of 30 percent of the population.
    Good luck with that.

  27. I don’t have a problem with gay marriage, but I can’t wait until they start to call Romney a flip-flopper.  That will be a show!

  28. Good for President Obama. My husband and I have several gay friends, and wish they had the legal right to marry–marriage was simply available for us, with no hate-spewing conservative rhetoric getting in our way.

  29. Congratulations obama, you FINALLY mustered the courage to state the obvious – that Democrats support gay marriage!  Way to cement a faction of your base that you already had in the bag! Real gutsy move there! What’s next, pandering to the radical socialists, abortion lobbyists and occupy idiots? And don’t forget those high school students. Lord knows you’ll need the child vote this time, more than ever!

Too bad you aren’t capable of focusing on the other, more important factors that (thanks to you) are plaguing the nation.

  30. I would like to issue a challenge to all of the gay haters in this comment section.

Without throwing god under a bus, without using the bible as a crutch, since NOBODY can prove the existence of god or validity of the bible, is there anyone out there brave enough to own their prejudice and explain how gays and gay marriage effects society in a negative way.  This should be easy, we have had gay marriage and unions in several states for a while now, so there should be evidence of the state falling to ruin.  Remember to be taken seriously please provide some REAL evidence.

    I’ll be waiting.

      1.  Yes, why else would you put them at risk?  Why would you take away their right to hospital visitation, their right to death benefits etc…  There are thousands of rights given to married couples that I cannot enjoy, even though we’ve been together for 10 years and own a home.  Our wills cannot be protected and are easily contested because the law sees us as “just friends” even after 10 years and buying a home together.  So yes, that’s how it looks from this side of the debate.

        1.  No problem, you are entitled to your opinion (and lifestyle), even if it (your opinion) is wrong. It’s a decision, and like all decisions, they have consequences.

If you figure out a way to eliminate all consequences of  actions, let me know.

          1.  Are you so stupid as to think it’s a choice?  How did you deal with your same sex attraction?  How was your journey to choosing your sexuality?  Were you afraid that you would lose your friends and family?  If it is a choice then everyone had to struggle with their sexuality at some point.  I lived in the closet for 28 years.  I didn’t even have my first same sex date until I was almost 30.  At the time I was scared of bigots like you.  Now I look back and regret opinions like yours keeping me from being who I am.

Should I live in the closet to make you more comfortable in your skin?  Why should that burden be mine, when it is really your problem?

And you never even attempted to answer my question.

        2. No. It is wrong to make the assumption that those who don’t agree with ssm hate gays and that those who support ssm think that about those who oppose.

          1.  Can you give me a good reason to oppose same sex marriage, that doesn’t blame god?  If the sanctity of marriage is at stake maybe you need to go after all of the celebrities that make a total mockery of it.  Go after drive through wedding chapels.  Divorce is near 50% in this country, maybe you should try to change divorce laws.  Denying people the same rights that you enjoy is hateful, plain and simple.  You do not realize how perilous life is when you are not offered the protection that marriage gives.

I would be fine with all legal unions same sex or opposite sex being called civil unions, and those performed in churches called marriage, as long as both afforded equal rights, but so far civil unions fall very short.  Call it what you want, people will still say “we’re married”

          2. It is your opinion that denying these rights is hateful.  However, I know for a fact that there are people out there that don’t support same sex marriage who ALSO don’t hate gay people.  They may not understand the issue fully and I don’t think calling them haters will do anything to make them see the light.

The campaign here is about changing hearts and minds, not cursing those who disagree with us.

I hope that when you were typing “you” in your reply, you weren’t referring to me.

          3.  A very reasonable viewpoint. I think it is more subtle. There are haters, but there are those who simply fear “the gay” and don’t even know why. They are preyed on by power seekers who want to turn their fear into political power.
Then there is the religious type who thinks their god has the right to tell everyone what to do, the same as the Taliban.

          4.  Maybe hate is too strong.  I am still reeling from the NC amendment, I live in NC.  I have had to deal with people coming to my door spewing hateful things in the name of god, pushing this amendment.  There is awful graffiti on the stalls in the restrooms where I work, making me wonder if I am even safe at work.  I had to watch religious leaders cheer on TV, wondering what they really won.  Is their faith stronger, are their marriages stronger?  Watching them revel while eating wedding cake is almost too much to take.  So maybe my words are strong, but this is still really raw, and I’ve seen more hateful things in the past months that I ever cared to see in an entire lifetime.

  31. So This is how Mr. Obama thinks he is going to take peoples mind off the economy. Not going to happen.

    1. Too bad. I thought it was an excellent way to distract people from discussing the lower gas prices and the recovering economy.
Maybe he should endorse marriage for kittens.

          1. You’re white, you’re male, have you ever really been discriminated against because of those things. Have you been spit on or called names, because you are both those things. I’m not saying doesn’t happen but it’s rare here in Maine.

  32. I believe that average common-sense voters agree that
all Americans have equal rights as provided for in the Constitution. The hoopla
over this issue is therefore contrived in that those who feel victimized also
feel they need special protections for their self identified special status as
different from the natural design majority.

The physical body needed no differentiation within the
context of our founding documents at their writing but people who feel the
Constitution’s words are not adequate can ensure their legal and financial life
needs are met through the provisions of civil marriage. Some life needs cannot
be specified in a document. One individual’s happiness is not necessarily the
same as another’s but is nonetheless Constitutionally protected. If one needs
to go fishing in pursuit of happiness and another needs to go hunting does that mean that either one
needs special protections to ensure their happiness over the needs of the other?

Further, what do older voters have that the much sought “young”
voters oftentimes do not? The natural birth of a baby forever changes attitudes
of the adults who instinctively by natural design discover themselves as
leaders of their family unit. Politicians who think that once the “old breeders”
die ignore the fact that they will be replaced by the naturally designed “young
breeders” who will take their places. Marriage has always been the universally accepted
term which honors the natural design of one man and one woman.  Non-marriage relationships with temporal,
material, concrete life needs can be protected through civil unions even though
already protected by the genius of the Constitution.

    1. ” If one needs to go fishing in pursuit of happiness and another needs to go hunting does that mean that either one needs special protections to ensure their happiness over the needs of the other?”

Over the fictitious need of bigots to stand in the way of a happiness that doesn’t involve nor impact them in any discernible way, absolutely.

You’re right to be obstinate isn’t greater than my right to be married to the person I love.

      1. Again, most commonsense people would probably agree that all have the right to pursue happiness in what ever way they choose. Commonsense however would consider that a grandmother who wanted to be a Girl Scout to pursue her happiness would be a violation of what the common person realizes to be acceptable.

If you’re suggesting that no organization has the right to claim rules of order (including the at-large social structure) then most commonsense people would disagree with you not out of your charge of bigotry but rather commonsense.

Commonsense would recognize your relationship but also that your relationship is not a marriage as marriage has been defined for centuries. Rather than feel ostracized or victimized it would seem a healthier approach to claim pride in your relationship choice by separating yourself from the definition of marriage and proclaiming your own institution….whatever you choose to call it.

  33. It’s been widely observed that the Obama campaign is lagging in its fundraising and this announcement attempts to reverse the trend.  It has less to do with “courage” than it does with cash.

“Gay Marriage Reversal Means Cash for Obama

Big gay donors are elated, while young people pull out their credit cards and give $1 million in 90 minutes.

Already, gay donors, mostly men, reportedly constitute 1 in 6 of Obama’s top fundraisers known as bundlers….

And for a class of disillusioned progressive mega-donors, many of them gay, the completion of Obama’s ‘evolution’ is an invitation to return…There are more LGBT co-chairs across the country are raising more money than we’ve ever raised.  And you’ll see a lot more of that now,’ the bundler said.”

See the fundraising letter (at the link) Obama emailed Wednesday night to supporters, urging them to send money to his campaign because of his support for gay marriage.

    http://www.buzzfeed.com/zekejmiller/gay-marriage-reversal-means-cash-for-obama

I don’t personally object to gay marriage, but it’s naive for anyone to claim that the timing of the announcement was anything but a cynical fundraising maneuver.

      1. Is this any different than when Michelle Bachman and Rick Santorum make their big announcements against gay marriage so that they can bolster their funding and support from others who think the same way.
I’m not sure why this is a problem.

  34. It can be both though. And it’s not that it matters. Bush went on and on about putting forth a marriage amendment during his campaign for his second term and that really got people fired up. Once he was back in office, you never heard of it again!

  35. Go back and read the unamended version of the Constitution. You got the 3/5th clause, no voting rights for women, etc.

    1. There are two ways to read the same words, one way being literal and the other,  symbolic. I am quite ready to accept the symbolic over the literal to pave the way for common sense interpretation.

  36. Dear BDN please stop the posts for this article. They are hurtful to the gay community. Please do not let people spread their hate in your forum.

    1. and yet when the article sways the other way- you are supposed to be allowed to spew your hate and negativity to people who don’t agree with the way you think ? come on , it goes both ways!

      1. I never spew hate. I am always a voice for peace for all sides. I always ask people to not criticize others for their religious beliefs either. You look new here. I forgive you as you were uninformed and have not read my posts. I pray for you and hope you find peace. God Bless you and God Bless the world.

  37. Gay is fine. Just stop pushing your agenda on everyone else. Stop trying to re-define things; like marriage!

    1. My agenda is your agenda. Freedom and fairness. At least I would assume that’s your agenda too…

    2. But gay marriage looks a lot like straight marriage. If you’re upset about that, don’t look into how they’ve redefined thigns like “bear” and “queen”! LOL

  38. I turned to CNN and saw that Obama thinks gay marriage is OK.

Then I turned to Fox News and found out it was mandatory.

    1. A headline on the Fox News website yesterday was “Obama Declares War on Marriage.” No joke.

      1. I missed that.

But how typical of the partisan group of recalcitrants that try to pass themselves off as  a legitimate news organization. Republican/tea party shills, all of them.

  39. Every State already has the right to allow Gay marriage, Obama said the same thing adding that the federal government will stay out of it.. The federal government has stayed out of it.. So I have to ask all the pro gay marrige folks, What did Obama say or do that changes anything that isn’t already allowed by law.. As usual he speaks and says or changes nothing.

    1.  The federal government has absolutely not stayed out of it. Would you say that The Defense of Marriage Act stays out of it? It bans any recognition of gay marriages, regardless of a state’s laws on the matter. Must be fun for those gay married couples to file their taxes.

Your claim that the President does nothing is untrue. He has many accomplishments in terms of equal rights for gay people. For example, by executive order, he mandated that any hospital receiving federal funds must allow visitation rights for same-sex partners/parents.

  40. LIKE WE DIDN”T KNOW ALL ALONG THAT HE SUPPORTED IT EVEN THOUGH HE WOULDN”T  COME OUT AND SAY IT>>> THATS A CASE WHERE ACTIONS SPOKE AS LOUDLY AS WORDS.

  41. States always had the right to decide if Gay Marriage should be legal, the federal government never bothered the States. So I guess that Obama was just quoting the laws that are already on the books. What again did he do?
I hear he will next have a speech that tells People they can own their own property.

    1. Please explain how the Defense of Marriage Act doesn’t “bother” states that have legalized same-sex marriage.

      1. Please explain what Obama said he was going to do about it. ?? Nothing!!!  He is not going to do anything to change it.  So Obama is going to continue to allow States to handle it themselves without compromising his values, yet convincing you he cares.. talk about drinking the coolaid. please. he said nothing.

        1. You made a claim now back it up. You said the federal government doesn’t bother states with the issue of marriage and that’s a lie. You can keep attacking my character all you want, but it doesn’t make any of your statements true.

          1. What did he say that will change the federal laws that  prevents you from getting married in states that allow it… What did he say he was going to do?? All I can get from it is he agreed with you. That was my point. I’ll aggree with you OK .I don’t know about that law. So I said as much as he did.. Does that make me a saint…
He didn’t say he would change anything and he won’t. He won’t do anything about your plight. he just wants your votes.  and I wasn’t attacking your character, I have nothing in the game. I was pointing out that Obama doesn’t care about you and says whatever he thinks will bring him votes and power… Rommey is no better.. I like ron paul

  42. The president has changed his mind on this issue a number of times-Romney won’t make that much of an issue will he?

  43. wot7.com/?p=346… “We cannot embrace gay marriage anymore than we can accept arranged marriage, child marriage, common-law marriage, group marriage, polygamy, and the like, including pet marriages. There are documented cases of people marrying their pets and at least one website that advocates it. Will marrying your pet gain in popularity as it slowly becomes legitimized like the gay movement with marriage did? Will we soon see referendum questions on ballots asking us to vote for it or be a bigot?”

    1. Your augment is severely flawed.  Adult people are neither children nor pets.  We are not talking about the right to marry a dog we are talking about the rights of people.  All people should have the same rights.  If you don’t agree with that then yes, you are a bigot.

  44. “those soldiers or airmen or Marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf, and yet feel constrained even though now that ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ is gone because they’re not able to commit themselves in a marriage.” Just a little Narcissistic Mr. President. Our soldiers are not fighting for him, they fight for america, n certainly not on a persons behalf.
The sad thing is that people are going to allow themselves to be political ponds in this chess game called politics. After all this time he want’s to make this an issue right before election time simply for votes. And before his fundraising event in the heart of the Gay community (California) It saddens me!

People are people they have free will and that is what makes people great. Free to love whomever they choose. But I do not think this should be a federal issue. I think it should be up to the states to decide what they want to do in their state. The federal government has much more important things they should be doing with their time.

    1. You are completely wrong. How would the south have voted on freedom for blacks? The answer is called the civil war or Selma Alabama. How would many states have voted for the vote for women?
This is not for votes, this is for freedom and against bigotry. If your small mindeness even excuses the betrayal of the troops that are willing to die for our freedom, then you have not earned that freedom.

      1.  Being married originated as a religious ceremony so if you don’t believe in being religious why care about marriage.

        1.  Being married originated as a way to define property, i.e. a wife, children, to grant control. And exactly what DOES religion have to with it? Keep your god in your heart and keep your god away from my freedom, my neighbor’s  freedom. Only an American Taliban would claim it is O.K. to force your religion on others.
