BANGOR, Maine — Police arrested a 45-year-old New York man Friday evening after a standoff at the Ranger Inn that lasted several hours and prompted an evacuation.

Vincent Hartinger of Bayside, N.Y., was taken to Penobscot County Jail on criminal mischief and disorderly conduct charges after an evaluation at Eastern Maine Medical Center, according to a news release issued Friday night by Bangor police Sgt. Ed Potter.

Bangor police were sent to the Ranger Inn, located at 1476 Hammond St., about 1:30 p.m. after dispatchers received a report that a man there had barricaded himself in his room.

Hartinger reportedly had been disorderly and threatening toward staff and had been throwing inn property through a window, according to police.

Officers at the scene and a crisis negotiator made numerous attempts to convince Hartinger to leave his room but when that failed, nearby rooms were evacuated, a warrant was obtained and the Bangor Police Department’s Special Response Team was called in.

“These precautions were taken due to the barricade situation and concerns of a weapon inside the room,” Potter said in the release.

The standoff ended about 7 p.m., when the special response team entered the room and pepper-sprayed Hartinger.

    1. At least the police know where most of these people are located. Mr. Ranger is a really nice person, it’s too bad he has to put up with some of these troublemakers. He’s put a lot of money into the business.

  1. I’m waiting for the Democratic party to come in and save him, with free housing, foodstamps, Maine care, and cash.

    1. Nope, you are actually funding him with 3 square meals and some activities at the county jail.

  2. I know Mr Ranger. He is an honest business man, offering excellent rooms at  affordable prices. He consistantly upgrades his property as much as he can in this economy. Unfortunately his prices attract a quality of people who do not respect his property or hard work. The problems at The Ranger Inn has to do with people staying there, not the hands on, hard work being done at the Ranger Inn.

  3. I personally know Mr. Ranger. He is an honest business man trying to offer exceptional service at reasonable prices. He consistantly tries to upgrade his property, while trying to keep room rates low. He offers a service for people who need short term stays due to jobs, sporting events, concerts etc. It is not his fault that people can no longer be respectful of other peoples properties. Don’t fault Mr. Ranger on this one!

    1. Joel himself does not care about the properties, its all about the money he makes.  I had to stay there a few days when my house was being worked on since all hotels were filled because of concert.  A guy came in drunk,( had a key to our room) he did not seem to care.

    2. C’mon, you know you should always blame the property, the town, the organization but never blame the person actually causeing the problem. That is the way the world works today. Pfffffttttt…..please.

You can tell who the people are that post on this board that actually own a business or anything for that matter. You can also tell who the moms basement occupants are.

  4. As I understood it, there was also a bomb threat issued by the perp. The Bangor Police Bomb Squad was on scene, as well. Once again, a special thanks to the entire Bangor Police Dept. for their exemplary handling, of a potentially dangerous situation. We’re indeed fortunate, to have these fine officers, professionally protecting our city and defending our citizens! I <3 the Bangor Police.
