AUGUSTA, Maine — Maine lawmakers have opened the concluding portion of this year’s session by overriding Gov. Paul LePage’s veto on one bill, but sustaining his veto of another.
The House of Representatives voted Tuesday morning to let stand a bill that revamps the fee structure for the state fire marshal’s office in its work inspecting amusement rides. The governor objected to the bill because it increases fees.
Supporters of the bill said the bill was submitted at the request of the fire marshal’s office, and that the old fees didn’t cover the cost of inspections.
The Senate must now decide whether to let the bill stand.
The House, however, sustained LePage’s veto of a bill that would increase filing fees at county registrar of deeds offices by $6 to $13, killing it.

Whoa, what is this? I thought the the Rs were acting on orders from their ALEC masters to let Tea Party puppet LePage’s vetoes stand.
ALEC has been very distracted lately, trying to prove it’s not a front for conservative lobbying.
Not sure why they’d try to hide it…the NEA, AARP, and MoveOn don’t.
When Republicans start supporting education and teachers then the NEA will start supporting them.
I think they do support education and teachers…not in the ways their labor organization would prefer.
Not in ways that will help children succeed and empower teachers.
oooooh, how maverick of the Republican legislators, to break with LePage on amusement park ride inspection fees, aren’t they daaaringgg.
The Fire Marshal’s Bill was a no brainer with the coming Fair season almost here. Rides and amusement’s need to be inspected for public safety. Even Paulie knows that and, if a ride breaks, with any injury happening right before the fall campaigning season (Hey, politics is a dirty business and we all know it ) due to a lack of adequate safety inspection, well, guess who the voting public is gonna take out their frustrations and anger on ? Like I said, a no brainer. The recorder’s fee was like-wise. How it’s gonna stand is going to be interesting.
Amusement ride owners probably don’t give the r’s enough money!
