WALDOBORO – Keith V. Gould, 77, unexpectedly passed away Friday, May 18, 2012, less than six weeks after his wife Vinnie, who died April 10. He was born Oct. 6, 1934, on Beals Island, the second son of Thurman and Ivy Gould.
He was a graduate of Jonesport High School, class of 1952, and went on to receive his bachelor’s degree from the University of Maine, and later earned his master’s degree from UMO as well. In 1955 he married the love of his life, Irvinia “Vinnie” Porter. Keith taught for 35 years in area schools, and spent the last years of teaching in South Bristol. He especially enjoyed coaching basketball there, and his school team won its first tournament under his direction. It gave him great pleasure to meet and chat with his students after all the years and went out of his way sometimes to look them up. After 35 years, he and Vinnie retired together and traveled extensively throughout Europe. Their excursions are traced in red on a map inside a closet door and he would gladly open the door to anyone who would want to listen. They visited all 50 of the United States, with the exception of Alaska, which Vinnie thought was “too far away.” From his childhood he loved music and could “name that country tune” on the first few bars, name which performers made it popular, and gained their autographs. He was an avid coin collector, and in his final lonely days he immersed himself in a quest for old and rare coins to round out his collection. Keith was a kind and generous man who liked to joke and he quite often delivered treats and morning donuts to the businesses that he daily visited. He will be missed by all who knew him, young and old alike.
Keith is survived by his son, Randy Gould and his wife, Sherri, of Corinna; two granddaughters, Jessica Gould Melcher and her husband, Joe, of Portland and Kirsten Gould of Bangor; a grandson, Taylor Gould of Boston; brothers, Thurman Gould Jr. and his wife, Margret, of Titusville, Fla., and George Gould and his wife, Denise, of Waldoboro; and a sister, LaVonne Beal of Friendship.
