THORNDIKE, Maine — A student at Mount View Middle School had to be taken to a hospital for treatment after an apparent fight with another student Tuesday morning.
RSU 3 Superintendent Heather Perry said Wednesday she could reveal few details, citing confidentiality protection for students at the school, which serves grades six through eight. She added that “the investigation is ongoing.”
“An assault did take place,” she said.
Perry would not confirm that one of the students suffered a broken jaw, which the Republican Journal reported, citing the victim’s father as a source. That newspaper did not name the student or the father.
“A student was sent to the hospital,” but not by ambulance, Perry said. All the school’s applicable medical procedures were followed, she said, with the goal of protecting the health and safety of all students.
No other students were injured, Perry said.
Law enforcement was contacted, she said. The school’s resource officer was not in the building that day.
School officials and law enforcement officers are conducting investigations into the incident, the superintendent said.

No “boys will be boys” crap. Charges.
So the answer is to give these boys a police record at an early age. Something that will be on their record for ever. Please don’t say it will go away at 18, I have seen too many instances of DA’s bringing up juvenile records in adult court.
The details of this fight and who started it and why aren’t available yet. A little common sense here instead of branding children for life.
Here is a little common sense….If you assault someone and break their jaw (which is a painful and serious injury to heal) you do get branded and you deserve it
Like patom1 said, we don’t know the details. What if the kid who broke the other kid’s jaw was a kid who was being bullied and had just had enough? The facts need to come out before anybody rushes to judgment.
As someone who was the target of bullying while I was in school, I can assure you that on several occasions when the bullies pushed me to the point of no return, I usually won the outcome. In each case I was the one in the principles office.
Nobody knows the details of this altercation. It was middle school so that means they are in probably no older than 13. Are you willing to condemn a kid to an institution for a fight that you know nothing about? If it turns out that the injured kid is the instigator, are you still willing to see him go to court?
yes jumping to conclusions on a forum is just silly.
It is a pretty basic sociological theory “labeling theory” that states: we will become what we have been labeled by higher authority. Brand this kid a criminal now could very likely start him down that path. It also depends on what other risk factors are involved. He cant be much older then 12…
The boys are between 14 and 15. If you say that “labeling” will cause a child to go down the wrong path then you are giving them an easy way out blame someone else, that’s to days logic “I did no wrong, it wasn’t my fault it was because of how I was raised or “labeled” “!
Much agreed! The world has become too soft and this is what
the youth is turning into, because of lack of discipline and a lack of being
able to discipline. People think that these “children” are just that,
children who do not know any better. It’s time that the justice system puts
them back into place where they belong because most parents won’t do anything
about the bad behavior of their own children.
School fights make the paper now?
unreal,, i suppose the folks that consider this breaking news are the same ones that want to eliminate school score boards..
Make a story of it just because it happened in Waldo County!
Foolishness bahahhaa bahahahah

Much better article…..and there is so much more to the story than even this…
This is unexceptable, did the teachers know about this fight? If so teachers now have a new job to break up these fights. You can protect confidentiality all you want but kids talk and this was proubably the most talked about at the dinner table. Ms Perry you don’t seem to know much about your students it’s time you get involved.
It’s ‘unacceptable’…just sayin’ …
Wannabe gangsta element.
Where does it say it was boys?
Ok,the Village Soup article is much better. They WERE boys.2 against 1..hmmm
Where were the teachers when this all happened ? A fight would be hard to miss or that one was about to start if they were where they where supposed to be. This should not have been let escalate to the point of a broken jaw. The school is as much to blame as the kids.
I’ve seen it happen when I was in school. Takes all of 2 seconds.
*shove* “get out of my way!
*turn* *punch*
Sad but true.
Yeah, let’s blame the teachers. And the school. And the community. And the economy. Let’s blame everyone but the ones involved. Where has personal responsibility gone?
you forgot george bush… this seems like something that would be his fault.
I agree with you. I taught 9th graders years ago. Try getting between a couple of 13 or 14 years old when their adrenaline is on full speed. These guys could be pals next week. Most teachers are not getting involved with that. If one kid’s jaw had not been broken nobody would even know this happened.
Personal responsibility is not part of the curriculum anymore.
People think the schools are awful up here. Sad to say, this happends in Florida all the time. Many fights per day. The teachers are the ones that break them up. Any teacher or anyone in the admistration that witnesses a fight and doesn’t break it up you will have a lawsuit. I have seen it happen. Time to put a plan in action.
Look up “sucker punch.”
This is what you get when people are allowed to sue!!! Teachers don’t get in the middle of altercations anymore like when I was in school, I remember watching a principal ripping students apart to stop fights, with not recourse. Can’t touch a student without a chance of getting sued today. I know first hand, I worked in a school, a fight broke out as classes where changing, I looked around no teachers in the hallway which is totally out of the norm. I stepped in and separated the 2 kids fighting. Instead of getting a job well done or any sort of praise, I was called into the principals office and verbally warned that I was not to touch a student for any reason, if a fight breaks out, send someone to get the principal and keep others from getting involved. I guess the moral of this story is, the kids can keep fighting for as long as it takes until the principal gets there, the result is people being injured!!!
the facts are pretty simple… 2 boys jumped a much smaller boy. One held him while the other boy, that was 60+ pounds heavier, beat him. facial lacerations & a broken jaw.
The problem is this was one of three fights in the middle school that day. Another problem is an ineffective principal and an 8th grade staff that no longer cares.
ah… so two cowards are involved…all against one…typical these days.
yeh figures. “fighting” used to be a mono a mono honor thing now everyone gets butthurt about taking a few lumps and then they go get friends, or a gun and comeback and score settle.
Right? I thoroughly enjoyed the fights I got to see in school. And you know what? The kids usually had a mutual respect after that, even if they still hated each other. This sounds like it was not a fight but an attack.
your kid/s go there?
The way I see it this boils down to semantics. Was this in fact a fight, which would indicate mutual combat on both sides. If that is in fact the case some one generally get’s the worst end of it. However if the superintendent was not misquoted and was indeed correct in calling this an assault that is a whole different story. Until this is clarified I for one will hold off on passing judgement of any kind.
from some of the other comments look like it wasnt a fight @ all.
Well, maybe these boys have their eyes on FAMU.
I don’t want to sound rude, but none of you here know (all) the details, nor do any of the reports (and don’t think I’m trying to say I know everything about this). All that needs to be known is that this was an assault not a fight. A fight is when all parties participate, that is not the case here. It was a very sad day and an extremely unfortunate happening. I just hope the victim makes a full recovery sooner rather than later. (FYI: for those of you who don’t think this is a story it is. A student was sent to the hospital, it was serious).
just gotta say, situations come up and i am not sayyin right or wrong either way,..however. sometimes you can go to teachers and attempt to deal w principal (good luck) but nothing is done and its supposed to be ZERO tollerance re bullying. ive handled it knowing issues were going to come, contacted teachers, other parents of involved parties, principal & super intendent etc, but ya know what NOTHING happend! so it comes down (unfortunatley) to snapping. honestly, im scared to see what the next 4 years have in store for the school with our over abundance of faculty that care and DO their jobs. One teacher was texting the other day while kids were outside at recess! i mean Really!! should it be 2 on 1 No but there is ALWAYS 2 sides to every story
and i would l also like to add to the teachers doing their job and caring, because there are some up there that are truly wonderful so i dont mean to catagorize not fair. so all you who are Great people as well as wonderful teachers, keep up the great work. all the others…find a job that you are fit for
