ROCKLAND, Maine — A 22-year-old Rockland man was sentenced Wednesday in Knox County Superior Court for choking his girlfriend and then punching her dog.
Justice Jeffrey Hjelm sentenced James T. Robertson to three years in jail with all but 10 months suspended. Robertson also was placed on probation for two years and ordered to pay $781 in restitution as part of his plea to a series of charges.
According to reports filed in court by the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, Robertson was having sex with his girlfriend on Oct. 11 at the Cushing home of one of her friends when she asked him to stop. He became angry, they argued and he then put his hands around her throat and was choking her, according to the police report.
She got free and went outside to get in a car and leave when he came out carrying her dog by its collar. He then punched the dog in its face as she watched.
He also threatened to kill anyone who called the police, according to the sheriff’s office statement.
Robertson was convicted of domestic violence assault, cruelty to animals, criminal mischief, terrorizing, theft of services, and violating a condition of release.
He should have gotten 5 years just for punching the dog.

Maybe he’ll learn that saying stop doesn’t always work in jail either.

10 months for this animal, [not the dog]? This SOB should have been sentenced to the whole 3 years. The woman better beware of him in the future too, he will come out worse than when he went in.
