AUGUSTA, Maine — The Maine Department of Corrections says its Juvenile Division has won the highest grade from a national organization that looks at safety, security, programs and other areas in corrections systems.

The Performance-based Standards organization, in its 2012 ratings, gives Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland a level 4, the highest PbS Level possible. Only 6-12 percent of the participating sites nationally get this rating.

The Mountain View Youth Development Center in Charleston achieved a Level 3, a rating achieved by about 30 percent of participating sites.

David Crowley of the PbS organization calls the Maine results “most impressive.”

  1. Just maybe they should talk to the parents of these kids, because I know for a fact that excessive force was used by 2 guards in the last 45 days.   Nice system that they have going on, NOT!!!!!!!!

    1. how do you know for a fact excessive force was used? have you seen a video tape with sound?. were you there? do you know EVERY detail that happened before your accusation of excessive force??? didn’t think so… you should walk a mile in a corrections officers shoes before you go and shoot off the mouth

      1. If YOU don’t consider a guard punching a kid in the face over and over again excessive force, while another one holds him down there is something wrong here!!!! I’ve seen the aftermath of the assault for your information. And before you run off with your mouth maybe you should call the detention center and ask about the investigation!!!??!!!!

  2. i grew up in the “old”MYC and some of the kids need to be forced to do stuff,i believe if they had the rules now a days that they had back then, the teenagers of today wouldn’t be  a nusience downtown and the shaw house needs to be abolished, tats just a place for kids to go and do what they want.I got thrown in MYC everytime I turned around I was a runaway and did what I wanted and the state put me in places I soon learned not to …

  3. My son has spent a large portion of time there, his mother and i have NEVER been arrested for anything, so the parents teach the kid to steal doesnt apply to us, though i am sure and have seen, it apply to others.  The actual Jail itself does a decent enough job keeping them safe, but it is known to most of the kids downtown as the SUmmer Camp.  They are certainly not prepared for the difference when the go to PCJ.  The woman that ran the Job for Maine Grads program there is amazing, but the ammount of time they spend couselling these young people is honestly wasted.  They do not learn from their behavior and they are easily snowed by made up stories or excuses these teens give for their behavior.  Its a shame really when they could be used better to prepare these kids for what life will have to offer if they continue down the same road they are on, but when you see that each MOD has an Xbox, Playstation3, Wii, Flat screen TV, and large ammounts of gym time, well they dont spend near enough time in their rooms thinking about that thing that put them there in the first place.  There is one counsilor there that i swore had ta thing for my son, didnt ask for any input from the parent or grandparents and bought ever story my boy told her.  I pray for those that are still there that she no longer is.
