HANCOCK, Maine — A Milbridge man lost control of a pickup truck and nearly struck a mobile home off Route 1 Tuesday afternoon but there were no significant injuries or damage as a result of the accident, according to Maine State Police.
Paul Martin, 78, was driving a 2006 Ford Ranger east on the highway shortly after 1 p.m. when he attempted to turn right into a driveway, Trooper Chris Smith said. Martin may have accidentally stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake pedal, the trooper said, because the vehicle sped into the roadside drainage ditch and then through a neighboring yard before it bore down on the mobile home.
Smith said the truck did not appear to actually strike the mobile home, but it came within inches of doing so. The truck drove over a bush just outside a window of the home, along with a few others between the driveway and the house.
Smith said Martin appeared to have been wearing a seat belt. The driver’s side airbag deployed during the accident. The trooper said the truck sustained some minor front-end damage.
“I’m being told he had no injuries,” Smith said of the driver.

“Narrowly Averts”??????????????? or maybe “avoids”????????
ummm… it DID hit the house,,…and some other info is incorrect… but I’ll leave it be..
Nice ‘avertsion’!
Who proofreads this stuff?
IF you are old all you have to say is I stepped on the gas when I meant to step on the brakes, gets you out of any tickets!!!
Techically it’s a truck. A small truck. Usually refered to as a pick-up. Anyone can drive one, you don’t need a special license, physical, etc. Would it hurt to print Pick-up truck in the headline for this story?
What’s your point?? Just sayin’ ..
The point is that this and other news papers use the word ‘truck’ as an attention getter. When you get into the article it’s ususally 2 or 3 paragraphs into the story (not this one) where you see it was a pick-up truck. Ask yourself what’s more exciting? Truck Car accident kills 2 or 1/2 ton pick-up and Cadilac accident kills 2.
To many people when you say ‘truck’ they envision an 18 wheeler. Which gets to feed the paranoia against trucks and their professinal drivers.
when I see the word ‘truck’ in an article, I assume it’s a pick-up,unless otherwise specified…but we all know what assuming does, lol…
Wonder if this is the same Paul Martin of Martin & Barbee Construction.
No it isnt, this Paul Martin worked for Wyams for many many many years.Very nice man and a very hard worker!
Some one told me yesterday. The Paul Martin I was thinking of passed on 4-5 years ago of a heart attack. He to was also a hard worker and wonderful gentleman.
You would think if the vehicle speeds up then you take foot off and put on other pedal…
Tell that to a a Prius driver in the courtroom. That whole Toyota thing evaporated pretty fast, didn’t it?
Nice looking (albeit top heavy looking) trailer and grounds. I didn’t think any 50’s trailers were left.
If the home was so mobile it should have moved.
