FORT KENT, Maine — Police on Friday seized 72 marijuana plants from the cellar of a two-story house at 109 Highland Ave., according to Police Chief Kenneth Michaud.

Gary Kitchen, 38, was arrested and charged with cultivating marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He posted bail and has been released, the chief said.

Police received a tip that Kitchen was growing marijuana. Michaud said Kitchen had a sophisticated growing operation set up in two rooms of his cellar which included a lighting and watering system with a filter and pump.

Kitchen had a “mother plant” he used to supply seeds for new plants, the chief said.

Michaud said Kitchen had a long criminal history in Bangor.

Kitchen is scheduled to be arraigned July 20 in Fort Kent District Court.

If convicted, he faces up to a year in prison and a fine of up to $2,000 on the cultivation charge and a fine of up to $300 on the possession of paraphernalia charge, which is a civil violation.

  1. High Five!  The war on drugs is finally won!

Now after some REAL criminals.  Like jay walkers, kids riding double on their bikes, parking scofflaws…

    1. From the article: Michaud said Kitchen had a long criminal history in Bangor.

So he is not a real criminal because he was caught growing weed? I would love to know what else he has been arrested for.

      1. He didn’t get arrested… Its a civil offense resulting in a fine. He won’t see jail time unless its over 100 plants. Therefore not a big deal as far as resources. They showed up. Took his plants, summons him then left.

  2. How much will we, the taxpayers, pay to prosecute and incarcerate this guy for growing herbs?

    TOO Much!

    End the prohibition!

  3. Nobody was in danger in any way; it was in a private cellar.  A person should be able to expect some privacy in his own basement.   Our old Constitution used to give us the right to privacy.  It’s too bad we blow money like this then we can’t afford our education budgets.  What crazy times we are living in.  Future generations won’t believe how we squandered our Nations wealth on this nonsense.

    1. He wasn’t even arrested.. they showed up, seized the plants, summonsed him and then left. Its not a very intense process involving a lot of people. I don’t think this man loosing his dope will prevent a child from learning math.

  4. Day took my weed eh! Now me buy Canada pot to smoke eh!   I say buy local eh!

Seems like a useable amount to me.
    What a waste of money.
I’m amazed they didn’t have six different departments raid the place. Where was homeland security, the DEA, ATF, County, local and State Police…
I don’t do drugs or alcohol yet when it comes adults smoking  pot, whats the big deal.. He is going to sit on the couch and eat watch some videos.

  5. Weed should be totally erradicated from the face of the earth . . .ONE JOINT AT A TIME!

    C’mon folks . . prohibition NEVER works!

  6. Fort Kent and marijuana?  Who’d a thunk it.  Obviously, he had a huge customer base.

  7. Marijuana is the gateway to hell drug. This arrest probably saved countless souls from eternal hell.Jehovah dosent like marijuana.

  8. A mother plant doesn’t provide seeds. A mother plant provides clones. No indoor grower would allow a male plant anywhere near their grow op.

    1. correct Police Chief Kenneth Michaud needs to do his homework.A Mother plant is a plant grown for the purpose of taking cuttings or offsets in order to grow more quantity of the same plant.

  9. “Gary Kitchen, 38, was arrested and charged with cultivating marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
He posted bail and has been released, the chief said.”
