AUGUSTA, Maine — Wildlife officials are encouraging Mainers to get out their rods and reels for a weekend of free fishing.

The Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife says anyone can fish without a license as part of the department’s Free Family Fishing Days on Saturday and Sunday, except for those who have had their license suspended or revoked.

The department says anglers have more than 30,000 miles of streams and rivers and 3,000 lakes and ponds in Maine where they can cast their cast their lines.

    1. Why is that?  If anything it’s a good marketing ploy, give people a chance to get others out fishing that in turn may buy a fishing license if they find they like to fish.

        1. So you think it’s the wrong time for the weekend because of some rain?  The date was on the books long before they knew what the weather was going to be this weekend.  They’ve been doing the free fishing weekend for quite some time.  If you can’t take a bit of rain when fishing than you probably shouldn’t be participating in an activity that revolves around being on, in, or near water.  Some of the best fishing is during the ascending flow from rain, I’ve caught many fish int he middle of a rain storm.

          1. Yes I get the date had been set for a while, I am not fool when it comes to these things, I have fished in the rain as well, but not when half the state is under flood watches or warnings either. A shower, drizzle day is one thing, downpours that will exceed 4 inches is another and it will result in road closings, NWS telling people to stay home, etc. Because of that the state could just extend the weekend.

          2.  There is no such thing as “bad weather” only inappropriate clothing…..and I have caught some MONSTER fish during pouring rain !

  1. How about extending it to next weekend to give us some notice and the chance of good weather?

    1. It’s in the law books, and there’s been a free fishing weekend for a long time.  In fact there is one for ice fishing season as well.

      1. wasnt long ago they gave us memorial day, labor day, 4th of july weekends as well but not this year. just the two which in effect are pointless considering the weather.

        1. If you were to only fish on days of good weather you would miss out on some of the best fishing at times, and if people don’t care to take advantage of the free fishing weekend they don’t have to fish.  In fact they don’t have to offer the free fishing weekend if they don’t want to, as not all states do.  Complaining about the weather is pointless no one has control over that, either make do or do something else.
