A very strange story, a 6,000-word front-page New York Times piece on how, every Tuesday, Barack Obama shuffles “baseball cards” with the pictures and bios of suspected terrorists from around the world and chooses who shall die by drone strike. He even reserves for himself the decision of whether to proceed when the probability of killing family members or bystanders is significant.
The article could have been titled “Barack Obama: Drone Warrior.” Great detail on how Obama personally runs the assassination campaign. On-the-record quotes from the highest officials. This was no leak. This was a White House press release.
Why? To portray Obama as tough guy. And why now? Because in crisis after recent crisis, Obama has looked particularly weak: standing helplessly by as thousands are massacred in Syria; being played by Iran in nuclear negotiations, now reeling with the collapse of the latest round in Baghdad; being treated with contempt by Vladimir Putin, who blocks any action on Syria or Iran and adds personal insult by standing up Obama at the latter’s G-8 and NATO summits.
The Obama camp thought that any political problem with foreign policy would be cured by the Osama bin Laden operation. But the administration’s attempt to politically exploit the raid’s one-year anniversary backfired, earning ridicule and condemnation for its crude appropriation of the heroic acts of others.
A campaign ad had Bill Clinton praising Obama for the courage of ordering the raid because, had it failed and Americans been killed, “the downside would have been horrible for him.” Outraged veterans released a response ad pointing out that it would have been considerably more horrible for the dead SEALs. Obama only compounded the self-aggrandizement problem when he spoke a week later about the military “fighting on my behalf.”
The Osama-slayer card having been vastly overplayed, what to do? A new card: Obama, drone warrior, steely and solitary, delivering death with cool dispatch to the rest of the al-Qaida depth chart.
So the peacemaker, Nobel laureate, nuclear disarmer, apologizer to the world for America having lost its moral way when it harshly interrogated the very people Obama now kills, has become — just in time for the 2012 campaign — Zeus the Avenger, smiting by lightning strike.
A rather strange ethics. You go around the world preening about how America has turned a new moral page by electing a president profoundly offended by George W. Bush’s belligerence and prisoner maltreatment, and now you’re ostentatiously telling the world that you personally play judge, jury and executioner to unseen combatants of your choosing, and whatever innocents happen to be in their company.
This is not to argue against drone attacks. In principle, they are fully justified. No quarter need be given to terrorists who wear civilian clothes, hide among civilians and target civilians indiscriminately. But it is to question the moral amnesia of those whose delicate sensibilities were offended by the Bush methods that kept America safe for a decade — and who now embrace Obama’s campaign of assassination by remote control.
Moreover, there is an acute military problem. Dead terrorists can’t talk.
Drone attacks are cheap — which is good. But the path of least resistance has a cost. It yields no intelligence about terror networks or terror plans.
One capture could potentially make us safer than 10 killings. But because of the moral incoherence of Obama’s war on terror, there are practically no captures anymore. What would be the point? There’s nowhere for the CIA to interrogate. And what would they learn even if they did, Obama having decreed a new regime of kid-gloves, name-rank-and-serial-number interrogation?
This administration came out opposing military tribunals, wanting to try Khalid Sheik Mohammed in New York, reading the Christmas Day bomber his Miranda rights and trying mightily (and unsuccessfully, there being — surprise! — no plausible alternative) to close Guantanamo. Yet alongside this exquisite delicacy about the rights of terrorists is the campaign to kill them in their beds.
You festoon your prisoners with rights — but you take no prisoners. The morality is perverse. Which is why the results are so mixed. We do kill terror operatives, an important part of the war on terror, but we gratuitously forfeit potentially life-saving intelligence.
But that will cost us later. For now, we are to bask in the moral seriousness and cool purpose of our drone warrior president.

Very well said, Charles!
“Zeus the Avenger, smiting by lightning strike.”
LOL! Another excellent commentary by Krauthammer on the narcissist-in-chief.
Expect more “Zeus the Avenger” stories from Obama’s cheerleaders in the media as his popularity continues to tank. What a national embarrassment this President is.
It’s nice to see that even conservatives are starting to come around to the liberal point of view on this issue, even if you’re unable to do so without engaging in some adorable knee-jerk Obama hatred in the process ;)
So now the skinny kid is a ” tough guy”.
He just presses a button and Shazzzam , you are dead.
And anybody else who happens to be near by.
Im not sure this cheap campaign stunt will help him much.
His past has mired us all to deeply to skate out of it with drones.
Title should have been,
Barack Obama:Drone
Our Erkel….a warrior???
What amazes me is the BDN printed this; must have got past somebody in charge….
Remember the military industrial complex and the CIA run this country. The democrats and republicans and tea party and socialists and whatever other political party are just window shopping for the citizens.
I don’t know about that. Someone who sets around the oval office with pictures of our enemies deciding if today is the day they are going to die must think he’s in charge on a very detailed level. To be honest this scares me a bit…. It’s just a little bit on the psychotic side.
*checks overhead for potential drone strike*
Report: Obama Redefines ‘Militant’ to Avoid Counting Civilian Drone Deaths
http://voices.yahoo.com/report-obama-redefines-militant-avoid-counting-11403806.html?cat=62
Honestly, Republicans can shut up about this. They’re were the ones beating the drums of war while singing Toby Keith and they demonized anyone who disagreed with them. Now that Obama is doing exactly what they wanted and better, succeeding in missions, etc. they want to complain about it? It’s petty and clearly political. Disgusting, plain and simply.
Oblamer isnt “doing exactly” what anyone wanted. Except himself of course. This administration has been letting Taliban leaders go free while placing such restrictive ROE on our troops that they cant even fight the war. Course you wouldnt know anything about that. And of course the article does mention we arent getting any captures anymore, so no more intel is coming down the pipe. But thats OK too. President Romney can just complain that he “inherited” the lack of intel from Barry, and that will make the Taliban stop attacking us right? Isnt that how it works in liberal land??
You must be really smart, that’s why you have to resort to name calling, right?
I like your handle lol……. So true..
There is something a little spooky about a President sitting in the White House drawing up hit lists. Put that together with redefining what a terrorist is and killing US citizens from afar and it legitimately poses some questions.
I understand these are the bad guys…. but why not capture them if possible to get intell? Is it because Obama doesn’t want to add any prisoners to GITMO for political reason? That would be disgusting plain and simple.
That’s moving the goal post though. It’s not enough that he gets the “bad guys” now he has to catch them and use them for intell. Republicans loved waterboarding then, but I’m sure now it’d be a different story. And what’s the alternative to drones? Either pulling out (not an option for war hawk Republicans) or using troops.
If the President doesn’t get the “bad guy” he’s the bad guy and if he does get the “bad guys” he’s still a bad guy. And then you criticize him for making politicized decisions? It’s such a joke.
Obama moved the posts when he embarked on the no capture, execute policy. What makes it weird is that Obama personally gives the orders. Those decisions are usually made within the military command structure.
It’s criticism for the sake of criticism. You find some weird and irrelevant distinction and hang your complaint on it. If somehow Obama instead took the alternate position, you’d adjust your complaint accordingly. Again, a joke.
Your argument rings hollow. You afraid the Drone-warrior may be losing his grip?
There is nothing hollow about it. Republicans change their criticism based upon the situation instead of based upon their platform or principles. When presented with facts that they’ve in the past either did the same thing or advocated the same thing, they find superficial distinctions and pretend like they aren’t contradicting themselves.
The same people who decided the term “french fries” is problematic are now the ones wanting restraint? And I’m the hollow one? Nice try.
You are going to have to provide proof I have done what you said. Present me with such facts, otherwise I would feel compelled to question your integrity.
You replied to my initial comment and I did not address it to Cheesecake1955 so demanding that I scour the net for your past comments as proof makes zero sense. I was obviously speaking in generalities.
First the President is “soft on terrorism” and now he’s a “drone warrior.” What I said is the absolute truth, Republicans are not consistent in their criticisms and critiques. These complaints are all political and that’s quite obvious.
Perhaps it is your position that isn’t consistent. If Bush were to personally handle every assassination like this President does I expect you’d be camping by the library. But it isn’t Bush (and Bush didn’t do that anyway) it’s Obama. Very transparent.
You keep trying to change the subject and now you’re trying to apply my argument to me. It doesn’t fly because I haven’t stated my position on this, so you wouldn’t know. I also don’t see liberals out there cheering in the streets about this and I don’t see them advocating for more defense spending either. So you don’t get to claim that I or others are being inconsistent in that regard.
The point is that Republicans are being inconsistent and political with their critiques. You still have yet to make a strong case as to why a drone strike or Obama specifically calling the shots are manumental distinctions compared to what Bush had done/what Republicans have advocated. Still haven’t articulated what would be a better approach either.
I’m transparent and hollow? You’re too funny.
Can you imagine if GW had a hit list, holy pooper these guy would be off their rockers….
Obama’s team is the one who put this story out, I’d say that makes it fair game for commentary.

Obama is “Special” cant deny that…..lol
