BANGOR, Maine — Police do not know why a young transient from Georgia attacked a store employee of Leadbetter Mini Stop on Hammond Street early Monday, but they did recover the weapon used, Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said.

“It was a knife,” the sergeant said Tuesday. “It was recovered from the victim — it was still in his back.”

Police arrived at the scene about 6:35 a.m. Monday and within a couple of hours arrested Danny Bolden, 23, at the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter.

The 69-year-old victim, a longtime Leadbetter employee named Frank, left the store just a minute or two before the attack, store owner Scott Leadbetter said Tuesday.

“He had just left the store here and was walking by Domino’s Pizza when he saw a man running towards him,” Leadbetter said, standing inside the store he has owned for 20 years.

Bolden stuck a steak knife into Frank’s back and then ran off, the store owner said.

“Frank said he didn’t try to rob him or anything,” Leadbetter said.

The assault occurred on Clinton Court, a short alley behind Grace United Methodist Church, and Frank somehow made his way back to the store, he said.

“I didn’t handle the situation too well but Frank was very calm,” Leadbetter said. “The knife was sticking out of his back — I couldn’t believe it.”

The alleyway is behind Cakes by Jan, located across the street from the Leadbetter store, which is at the corner of Ohio and Hammond streets.

Frank, who has worked at the store for more than 15 years, was transported to Eastern Maine Medical Center’s emergency room and remains in the hospital, Leadbetter said, adding that doctors have told him he will be there until Friday.

When Leadbetter visited his employee in the hospital on Monday, Frank told him that if he had to walk another 50 feet he would not have made it, the store owner said.

Bolden’s father moved to the area several months ago and is a regular customer, Leadbetter said. His son arrived from Georgia within the last month or so and also had shopped at the convenience store.

“We never had any problems” beforehand, the store owner said.

Bolden’s father stopped by the store on Tuesday to apologize for his son’s actions.

“He feels very sorry for what happened,” Leadbetter said.

Bolden was charged with elevated aggravated assault, a Class A felony, and could face up to 30 years behind bars if convicted.

“There is no motive known at this time,” Edwards said.

Bolden first stayed at the homeless shelter in early May, shelter director Dennis Marble has said.

Bolden was taken to the Penobscot County Jail and remained there on Tuesday. He is scheduled to have his first court appearance Wednesday at the Penobscot Judicial Center.

The investigation continues and those with information about the attack may call the Bangor Police Department at 947-7382. Anonymous messages can be left on the tip line by pressing extension 6.

  1. Pretty sad, i would consider its time for this store to shut down.  So many issues with it, and the cops are always there

          1. I am not going to argue with you either, re read it it says so many issues over there.  I did not blame this incident on the store at all.  But its true the cops are there on a daily basis.  Always arresting someone or kicking them out.

          2. I am not uptight, but ty anyways.  I just think the owner should reconsider who he hires, he hires a bunch of people that does not care.  For living in that aread for 12 years and being a daily visitor daily

    1. the cops are always there drinking coffee and eating doughnuts and keeping an eye on the place. i lived in that neighborhood for a few years. nice store.

    2. I actually know the owner and his family.  His store employs quite a few people so when you say close it down your just adding to the unemployment problem!! Why not close down the Job Corps, I drive by there every day and see at least 15 underage kids smoking or loitering around the Hannafords at the Airport Mall, swearing and spitting all over the place …. why not close down the City Bus or the Parking Garage…people loiter there and the cops show up there alot too….Alot of times you see cops at Leadbetters its not because someone did something wrong, cops are allowed to to stop and have a break too.  Instead of closing places down , why not help revitalize them.  Stop into Scotts store sometime, after a few visits you’ll see its actually just like any neighborhood store in any town around.  He knows his regulars and treats his new customers with dignity and respect. He keeps his eye on the ones that need watching and he even makes a damn good sandwich!!

      1. Well i personally know Scott also and his brothers.  I am not condoning them at all, all i know is its time for a change in that neighorhood and its time for scott to reconsider some of his employees that are just there for the money not the customers,

        1. those workers deserve a medal, they work their butts dealing with bangor’s finest, making fresh sandwiches everyday for us to enjoy. can’t be that bad if you’re a daily visitor.

  2. It takes a certain type of cowardice to forefill the requirement of a back stabber. Next in line is a sucker puncher. We need a transient net at the Kittery toll booth to snag up the bottom feeders.

  3. Still curious to know what brought him to Bangor (and I don’t mean the Greyhound bus which is obvious).  People don’t just “wonder” into Bangor, it takes dedication to travel that extra 3 hours from the NH border to end up in the eastern most city of any significance in the country.  Who paid this “transient’s” fare…the state of Georgia?  This might be a workable plan: setup travel agents at all the area shelters with free one-way south bus tickets.  It would certainly be a lot cheaper than the current  setup for ME taxpayers.

    1. he may have met someone online. i know of a few out of staters who have ended up here because of that

      1.  BDN must have just added that info. It wasn’t in the original posting. Thus the chatter about end of the line bus etc

    2. Most likely daddy told him about the awesome handouts we have compared to those in Georgia.
      Worth the bus trip.

  4. it would be very interesting to know how bought his bus ticket.
I know that cities used to ship their transients to Portland Oregon about 20 years ago… free bus ticket, and then the libs in Portland took care of all comers…. at least for a while.

I gotta say, if I am a mayor of a town, I might just do the same… give trouble makers free bus tickets somewhere else.

    1. I Know other states used to send people to Maine to get on our welfare system and get them off their streets because it was easier to get welfare here….sad, but true and this is what we get for the lenient system we have.

      1.  It would help if they would make GA recipients have to volunteer more than 40 hours a month- Aspire requires 30 hours a week.

    2.  I remember about 20 years ago Connecticut used to be the place to go. I had some friends that heard by word of mouth back then that the welfare was awesome and you got your checks twice a month. They went and spent about 4 years there before moving on. The benefits were better and they often boasted about it. These people have their own networks as well as social workers and other states agencies that do this stuff. It is a little bit of the underbelly of that world.

  5. Unfortunately, this is a normal operation for Brand X.  It keeps happening time after time. We sure hope the victim recovers properly.

    1. You aren’t kidding. I was born here and for most of my youth lived here and moved back here in 2001 and i was shocked at how much it had changed then. Now it is getting disgusting.Yeah this happens in the cities, that was the main reason I moved my family back here, for peace and quiet. They need to 1.stop trying to parent everyone elses children around here, these kids are unruly and the “system” supports it. @Gadael:disqus .stop giving assistance to these out of state transients that come here,it’s ridiculous. 3.toughen up the sentences on this kinda crime. Habitual offenders should have their a** handed to em

      1. people in cars used to pull up and the guys would jump out and start beating on a friend of mine, becuase was black, in the 70’s. Guys threw a gay man off the bridge in the 80’s. Has it really changed that much?

        1. I think Bangor has changed quite a bit.  Of course, Bangor now is probably what Portland was 20 years ago….the trash just keep moving north….and Maine makes it easy as we just essentially paying them to come here.

          1. Im sorry to tell ya but we have alot of our own trash right here in maine . every state does.

    2. youtube.  Detriot in ruin… Major cities are becoming the dumping grounds of the poor, while the suburbs get stronger.
County seats Like Bangor or Skow Town administer all the services which is the magnet that attracts the poor.
People move to the outskirts and work in the cities. nobody wants to live in Bangor in Old Houses.. so as they are falling apart the poor rent them
Is there a way to fix the way things are.. I don’t know. Other then tear old neighborhoods down and sell building lots for new homes.
In Detriot they tear 100.000 homes a year down level,  whole areas…

      1. The solution is to not run to the suburbs.  Stay in your old house and take care of it.  Use your downtown.  And walk around for pete’s sake.  All of these things foster community, make the place more welcoming for the good ones you want living in your town, and make the bad ones feel like they’re not in charge.

Its contagious, I promise.  Plenty of large cities with massive suburbanization and a core of old homes are still great places to live.  Boston is the easiest example.

        1. That’s so true!  Wasn’t long ago that people fled Boston for the suburbs, but they still worked here and filled the highways and demanded commuter trains. Places like Westland Ave were boarded up because of landlord firebugs or the South End wasteland. People took advantage of tax credits and rehabed old row homes on the “frontier”and now are getting 1-2M+ for them. This in only the 30 years I’ve been here. Urban renewal never worked: The West End was bulldozed in the 60’s and now the only things there are Gov. buildings and bars for The Garden. Sorry for the rambling, but people: Only you and your investment in your neighborhood can keep it alive. Abandoning it just leaves it for the rats.

        2. It’s easy to feel like the bad ones are in charge when you see an innocent old man walking home from work randomly get stabbed and makes me feel like walking around less. I think it’s a pretty normal reaction. Bangor’s got a big problem. How do you control it? It would help if they would make people do the time for their crime. Get those crackheads! http://bangor-launch.newspackstaging.com/2012/06/05/news/bangor/bangor-man-arrested-on-crack-charge/?ref=polbeat

  6. A Man 69 years old and can’t have some peace in his later years because some punk feels the need to rob him? Don’t worry about a motive its as plain as day ROBBERY can you say that twice?

Its a damn  shame I cant really express how I feel about these recent attacks in Bangor Portland and Lewiston  less I be banned for being racist!

My thanks to the liberal media and courts for allowing this to continue to happen Its no longer one isolated instance

    1. the story states plain as a day that frank said he DIDN’T attempt to rob him. and not all the stabbings and shootings in portland, auburn, lewiston and bangor have been commited by minorities… so please take your biggotry (sp?) and racist comments else where BEFORE you state your true opionion, wow how ignorance becomes of people… not that it’s an excuse but this scumbag of a man was high on bath salts from what i’ve heard from people familiar with this individual… 30 years doens’t sound like enough for a corwardly, yellow, low life back stabbing scumbag like this kid

  7. Sure hope Sharpton and Jackson don’t decide to come and offer their ‘expertise”.

    1. Good point. If this was white on black, and it was murder, you can only imagine the outrage.

  8. This has nothing to do with a store–this is about a victim of a crime in an area that needs regular patrol.   I am sure there are many people who depend on walking to the store for basic needs.  Unfortunately, its proximity to many transients is a problem – sigh…

  9. Gott’a ask; If someone stabs you in the back for no reason, can you then shoot them dead? Wouldn’t that solve Little Danny’s problem and save the taxpayers money?

    1. It has been done.  Can you spell Trayvon?  Then look what happened to the shooter!

  10. Really now how brave do you have to be to ambush a man who is three times your age, and stab him in the back.  I’ve tried and tried to come up with words for it and just can’t seem to do it.  Somehow Vile, disgusting little coward doesn’t seem anywhere near strong enough.  Doesn’t the fact that the victim is elderly elevate the punishment for the crime? If it doesn’t it should!!!

  11. So very tired of hearing Edwards come on the news each time this happens and tell us, “Crime is not up in Bangor.  This is a normal thing and it just happens in cycles.  We probably wont have any crime in Bangor for the next month”  What city does he live in?  Cause it certainly isnt the Bangor we all get on here and comment about on a daily basis.

  12. Strange and unsettling that this was a complete random act of violence with no robbery attempt. At least with all the other event that have happened in Bangor lately, there has been some connection between the perpetrator and the victim. Because of that, I never was overly worried for my own safety. This incident has caused me to rethink that.

  13. It is not the store’s fault, it is not the fault of the people who work there.  It is however the fault of many people including ourselves.  We are allowing the State of Maine to accept these transients to come to our State, use up the spaces in the homeless shelters, using state funds to be on welfare, bringing in drugs or buying drugs, stealing from the people of Maine, etc.  We all complain but never do anything about it, including me.  Although, I have made the decision to get a concealed gun permit and I do have firearms in my home to protect me in the chance of someone breaking in.  Nothing will change until “We the People of the State of Maine stands up and be heard.  If we do not start helping the police departments, sheriff’s department, state police, etc. to stop this, we have nothing to complain about.  It is not just the transients anymore either, we have children who are breaking the law, drinking at age 16, texting while driving, doing drugs, etc.  Where are the parents?  So instead of griping about transients, crime, drugs, murder, etc.,  LETS STAND UP AND FIGHT BACK.  Tell our government representatives to stop giving the state’s money to those who do not deserve it, start beefing up the police departments, etc. and also, start paying more attention to how our state looks in the eyes of others.  (Another pet peeve, I also think the City of Bangor [and all over the State of Maine] looks like crap, they are doing nothing to make it look nice such as keeping grass mowed, trash picked up, weeds are growing in the islands around the city, etc.)

      1. Let all of those on public assistance report to the local public works garage and help keep Maine clean. Might motivate them to get off assistance and get a job.

        1. Every spring I used to see crews picking up trash along the highway.  Do they still do that?

    1. Am I reading that you want to ban a certain class of people from coming to the State? Are you building a gas chamber? People do have the freedom to be transients, whether you like or not. Welcome to the greatest free nation on Earth.

      1. Welcome to Maine, where if you are a shiftless layabout, we’ll give you all of the free stuff you’ve ever wanted.  If you’re just a poor working stiff that has run in to a set of unfortunate circumstances, aw, gee, sucks to be you!  It should be the other way around!

I think Glenn Beck said it best a few years ago when he said this is how welfare ought to go:  “Hi, welcome to the Glenn Beck Welfare Office where we’ll float your family for a couple of weeks while you are out looking for a job, how can I help you?”  “Uhh…yeah…I can’t find a job.”  “Oh, that’s too bad.  Well, we can help you, can I see your high school diploma please?”  “Uhhh…what?”  “Your high school diploma?”  “Uhhh…yeah…I dropped out.”  “Aww, gee…sucks to be you…NEXT!  Wait…tell you what…you go out and get a G.E.D. and come back and see me.”  The problem that we now have  in this country though is that my generation (The Trophy Generation) had EVERYTHING handed to us.  I was lucky in that when I was going through school we didn’t get the participation trophies, but people three or four years younger than me sure did.  What did we get for our troubles?  We’ve now got an entire generation of young people who don’t know how to deal with disappointments that want a free ride in life.  In the immortal words of Denis Leary: “Life’s tough…get a helmet!”

        1.  “I think Glenn Beck said it best…”

stopped reading. If you want your argument to be credible, don’t quote idiots like Glenn Beck.

      2. Yeah that is true but Im pretty tired of my tax dollars going up each year to support them!  Makes me want to go to work each day so these losers can hang out all day doing drugs, drinking, smoking and how do these people afford this if they are homeless????

      3. No, because some of them are here to try and make a new living and Maine is supposidly a place to go because of not so much crime and Maine people are caring and giving, BUT because of the Maine people being this way and the fact that we have less crime, is bringing in the wrong kind of people that we don’t wish to stay.  There are those people who turn the other way, do not report the wrong doings of others (even our own State of Maine residences do wrong, steal from the State, are lazy and don’t want to work, etc.), people need to step up to the plate and start reporting the drug dealing, the stealing, do thorough background checks on people applying for state aid, see where they have come from and why they are here.  If I see a crime, or know something, I call 911 and report it.  But there are those who just don’t want to do it.  Unless or until the people start coming forward, it will be hard for the State of Maine to get better.  Some transients are here for a good reason, unfortunately, I believe there are more that are not.

    2.  I disagree BC.  I think it’s the fault of the boy’s parents, for not installing the fear of a higher  power and a little empathy.

      1. And I agree with that too, BUT I will tell you that it is not always the parents fault, i.e. I have a family member who was brought up in a loving home, where there were no drugs, no drinking, no smoking, etc., he worked part time at age 14/15, then quit that job to work for the summer at age 16/17.  Once he quit that job, he has never worked but here and there doing odd work (4 years now).  Tries to bum money all the time, he is just plain lazy.  Did the drinking scene after high school, has done the drug scene a little.  And he will admit that it had nothing to do with his upbringing.  So, we can’t always blame the parents.  But we can blame the parents if they give their children money, vehicles, place to stay and they do not work to help pay for costs, etc.  Then yes, it is the parents fault to enable them from getting out on their own.  Those are probably the ones who are stealing from their parents and others, doing the drinking/drug scene, etc.

  14. I honestly hope the Judge teaches this “BOY” a valuable lesson in stabbing an old man in the back.   Better yet there’s a huge population in the PenCo Jail that love Frank.  Nuff Said.

  15. From Georgia??
    Hmmmm…..
Didnt Catholic Charities of Maine bring up some Georgia folk a while back??
The ” Georgians” made it to Lewiston and stayed.
Maybe the backstabber strayed from the flock.
    A lost soul.

Ive been to Atlanta and wouldnt want to stay there either.
    It makes Bangor look good.
    Sad for the dad.

  16. I hate to say this but with all of the transients that seem to be coming here maybe it’s time for profiling by the police? Stop these people that are just wandering the streets and question them. If they seem a bit suspicious they probably arent up to any good. There might still be some good law abiding citizens in that area but the last time I was there all I saw was a guy with a shopping cart full of cans and a bunch of guys with hoodies and pant legs rolled up. In my day if you wore a hoodie and had hi pant legs you were considered a clam digger. High Tide.

  17. Why did he stay at the homeless shelter when his Father lives in Bangor? What made him stab the clerk in the back if the store owner never had a problem with the guy? I am missing something here.

    1. Because all the “social service programs” available these days mean you never have to say I’m sorry.  Out there, in the real world, you can be an a-hole to your parents, your friends, your relatives, you can steal from them, lie to them, assault them, do drugs, drink, stay out late, damage property, and somewhere, someplace, there is a liberal program ready to make you out to be the victim, get you in touch with GA, put you up in a shelter and call you a victim.    A victim of your parents’ efforts to hold you accountable, a victim of your spouse’s refusal to continue enabling your drinking, a victim of your dishonesty when you steal to drink and stay high, a victim of your “mood disorder” when you really only suffer from laziness and lack of accountability.

      1. I’m picking up what your dropping but I still don’t understand why? How can an individual stab someone in the back and then run away? Usually when someone attacks someone else it’s because of a prior confrontation. Something is missing in this case. Oh, I understand all that you said but something is still missing. My God, people are crazy and they want what they want and will do what they can to get what they want. Very sad indeed!

      2.  OMG, I think I am going to frame that ! What a great post, you said it just the way I have thought it for years. Well done Susan.

    2. Maybe he thought his father would take him in once he got here and maybe dad knew better.

    1. half these people dont need meds that is the problem they are so overmedicated its not even funny.  what they need is a kick in the a….. and to be accountable and not entitled to every free welfare program out there.

  18. Doesn’t shock me in that  part of town.  that whole area is a mess. every state has there crazies. i dont think it matters which bus they ride. fact is bangor is just way out of control with drug addicts , low paying jobs and high cost to live here. all these things dont mix well .

  19. Imagine a person without a home,a town,a state to call theirs. WOW. God Bless him..

I hope Frank is doing well and my prayers are with him.

What happened an who did this to our country?

    1. Don’t send him back, make him pay for what he did.  Just sending them back shows others that, oh well, we just get our hands slapped and so let’s go back and do it again.

  20. No robbery or words exchanged?

Is this another one of those random black on white attacks which are sweeping the nation?

    1. I think he got scared after he did it.  My question is, why do it if you were scared to do it and get caught.  Kudo’s to Bangor PD for finding the guy so quickly on this one.
