PORTLAND, Maine — A Maine State Prison inmate has sued a Portland police officer, claiming the officer used excessive force during an arrest for assault.

Jabril Mohamud is seeking $20,000 in the suit filed against Officer Jonathan Roberts. The 27-year-old Mohamud filed the complaint in state court in May but it was moved this week to federal court.

Mohamud says Roberts kicked him, used pepper spray and pushed him down the stairs after he was handcuffed. Mohamud says he broke his fall with his shoulder and knees, causing so much pain that he could not stand. Mohamud also accuses Roberts of using racial slurs.

A city lawyer tells The Portland Press Herald that Roberts denies the allegations.

Mohamud pleaded guilty to the January 2011 assault and was sentenced to a year in prison.

    1. Yep, you probably think Jabril had every right to beat the crap out of that female. Now the poor guy is sitting in MSP with nothing but time on his hands to dream up lawsuits.

    2. I suppose you think the lawyers who weren’t there and are getting paid $150 an hour to get you off regardless of the facts are more credible than the cops who were there and are getting $20 and hours to keep the peace and present a reasonable case.

    3. How exactly are they trained to lie?  I would love to know your experience with the Criminal Justice Academy!

  1. should have pushed him down the stairs four or five times! And should he for some stupid reason get any money, it should go back to the State for giving him a good life for a year.

  2. waah wahhh, maybe the person he assaulted should sue him.  Big sissy, can’t take what he dishes out.
