BANGOR, Maine — A female passenger in a blue-gray minivan died at the scene of a three-vehicle collision and rollover at the junction of Broadway and Burleigh Road Sunday evening, Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said from the scene.

“Speed does seem to be a factor,” the sergeant said, just feet from where the crash occurred between the minivan — registered to a Bangor couple in their 70s — and a silver GMC Envoy registered to a couple from Eddington that rolled over.

The driver of the minivan was “incapacitated” and unable to answer questions about what happened, Edwards said.

The collision occurred shortly after 6 p.m. near Kev-Lan and involved three vehicles and eight people, seven that were taken or drove themselves to area hospitals, the sergeant said. The police department’s accident reconstruction team and criminal investigation division are investigating what happened. At around 7:30 p.m. it was still too early to say what occurred, Edwards said.

“When we arrived with firefighters from Bangor Fire Department, we quickly determined one passenger in one of the vehicles died,” the sergeant said. “One has died and a few have been transported to the hospital.”

Three eyewitness said the Envoy was speeding out Broadway and first hit a tan Toyota Camry, apparently trying to turn into Kev-Lan or Gifford’s Ice Cream.

“They clipped that car there and went out of control and hit the van head-on,” said the mother of Gifford’s employee Cassidy Cook, while she filled out a witness statement.

One vehicle caught fire and someone from the ice cream shop grabbed a fire extinguisher and ran out, the employee said.

A 22-year-old Bangor woman, who lives in the area and who had just pulled into a parking spot at Tom T’s store, heard the Envoy attempting to stop.

“I heard screeching and looked out my passenger window and the SUV was straight up in the air,” she said, asking her name not be used. “The next second the SUV was rolling over and glass was everywhere. It happened so quickly. I’ve never seen anything like it before. I’m a little freaked out. It’s crazy.”

Firefighters used extrication equipment to get the people out of the Envoy, which was heavily damaged and missing its roof. A blue tarp covered the minivan, which had extensive damage to the front end.

One witness said the minivan was stopped at the intersection when hit, and another said it was driving towards downtown.

Dover-Foxcroft resident Sean O’Brian said after the Envoy “nicked that car [the Toyota], it put it sideways and he hit him head-on,” referring to the driver of the minivan.

A large crowd of onlookers gathered at the scene. One could be heard saying, “This is tragic. Just tragic.”

Broadway remained closed at 9:30 p.m. between Grandview and Burleigh, and was expected to re-open in two to three hours, Edwards said.

Police have not released the name of the woman who died or the names of the vehicle drivers but are still looking for people who witnessed the fatal crash or have information about it. Those with information about the ongoing investigation are asked to contact the Bangor Police Department at 947-7382. The anonymous tip line can be accessed by pressing extension 6.

Edwards said police also responded to two other accidents — one in which a person was given CPR — within an hour of the fatal crash.

    1.  This intersection has a traffic light. I don’t believe the one in Orland did. That kind of changes the situation some. It doesn’t make it any less tragic though.

      1. Nope….the one in Orland doesnt, because Im right on that Castine Rd and it SHOULD….because its a very bad blind spot if your pulling off the intersection with cars going straight on Rt 1, because of the ones pulling onto the Castine Rd…..

        1. Everytime my son leaves MMA headed into “town”  I remind him to be careful at that intersection!  I have had a couple close calls myself because of the blind spot and when the sun is sitting just right you get the bad glare!

          1. Yeppers, I know exactly what u mean….I cut across now and go at the “OTHER” bad intersection by the HOME….that one is just as bad now with how they redid that work…….no surprise if theres something bad there this summer.

          2. I will go to MMA that way but it is a horrible place to turn left even with the blinking light! Would love to see a light put in at the Rt. 1/175 intersection!

          3. Id like something to be done….but sadly nothing will til a few more of these accidents happen Im sure of…..the entire stretch from Rt 175 towards Ellsworth will be interesting now, with them fixing a 10 and half mile stretch….so guess all that can be said is keep the eyes open and aware from all angles.

  1. gross picture hope the families involved with the people involved arent seeing these pics

      1.  You are right, but there is no reason they can’t wait until the families have been notified to publish them.

How would you feel if you had a loved one who drives a green mini van, and was to have been on Broadway about the time this happened, and you saw this photo? You would be an absolute wreck until you found out if it was or wasn’t your loved one.

It’s the timing of the publishing, rather than the actual publishing that upsets me.

          1.  By now, they may have. The pictures were posted within minutes of the accident happening though.

        1. Happened to me…found out my brother died that way!! News showed he car but didn’t release his name..even showed the license plate on his car!! Sad…very sad!

          1. This is another form of speeding. Publishin g things before the facts are all in, before formalities are observed …
Impatience and rushing is every where.

      1. What is graphic about them? I don’t understand why people think a picture of a crushed vehicle is graphic. No blood is shown, no body parts are hanging out windows. Just smashed up vehicles and a blue tarp.

    1. Are you the same Davida Willette that jumps out infront of cars between Bucksport and Bangor on rt 15 looking for rides???

  2. My condolences to the family of the deceased. I hope that the others involved make it through both physically and emotionally!

  3. everyone last week complained about the funeral home employees taking care of a victim – which is it going to be?  I can tell you the funeral people doing their job with the covered gurney beats the heck out of this photo as far as gruesome in concerned.  I’d rather see someone being taken care of by professionals than a blue tarp covering the dead person in the van until the professionals can get to them and make it more presentable.

    1.  I think the reason people get so upset at these pictures, is the fact that we are still a fairly small community. Even though the police aren’t releasing names, someone could click on this article, and recognize a vehicle as being that of a loved one. On the BDN website is just not how someone should find out their loved one was killed in a car accident.

      1. AGreed! Looked at that van and my friend has the SAME one….and drives that road….not sure this is news that needs to be shared….enough to say there was an accident and avoid the area

      2. Sometimes people actually go and LOOK at these photos to verify if it is a loved one. Last week when the  motorcycle fatality happened In hampden A family member and I were Trying to get information on the accident. We had a good idea it was a family member. We looked at photos, looked at comments, looked at updates trying to get some clues Hoping it was NOT our loved one…. We called the PD who could not release info, She stopped at the end of the road and could not get info even though she owned a Bike that could have been on that road at that time. Finally, we saw the details that it was a black harley and she knew… .She called the deceased’s father who lives away out of town and had him call the PD for verification, this sped up “notification of next to kin”, and she was able to go to the scene within 15 minutes after that call. We waited and called everyone we knew for over 2 hours hoping for the best. ….. When you see this stuff you WANT to know if it is your friend, your husband, your son.. You get on the phone and you call to see if they are OK. This is what the Newspapers are for. to inform people, as soon as possible what is happening. It takes hours,,, sometimes days to notify immediate family, which does not include girlfriend, best friend, aunt , uncle. so by getting the stories out there and online. people can find out sooner, and get there to support the living who are now without someone they love…. . If people don’t want to see this stuff. its pretty easy to stop looking at the site…. leave it for those who want to know….

  4. What’s really scary is the speed limit on that stretch of road (If this is the intersection I think it is…) is 25MPH.  So incredibly sad. My sincerest condolences to everyones familes.

    1. It’s a 35 zone, starting right about at that church on the hill.. The biggest problem that happens there is no one pulls into the correct lane (once it splits into 2 lanes) for about 100 yards, then do so without looking. That, and the people stopping halfway through the turn into the Giffords leaving the back of their cars in the middle of the road.

      1.  Okay I am thinking of the the complete opposite end then, where the Off/On ramp to the interstate is. Thanks for clarifying for me =-)

      2.  I thought the speed limit on Broadway was 25mph until after the intersection with Burleigh Road.  Have they changed that recently?

        1. It’s 25 until right after the turn for the Christian Science place, then turns to 35 right as you start down that hill towards KevLand.
Realistically, people are usually doing 40 by the time they hit the radio station, often because a lot of them fly through the right turn only lane (right before it) to cut off the line of traffic.

      3.  Either way, even doing 35 you’re going to end up getting tailgated because that’s too “slow.”

      4. I find that people go too fast down that hill, pay little attention to traffic in front and just plain are in a hurry. Too many times I have had folks try to pass on the right ( passenger ) side before I even get to the area of the second lane!
People lately just seem to want to be in front, they lack the ability to wait a few seconds

        1. It really seems people don’t grasp the concept of “lanes” while driving on Broadway, on any part of that road. People stop in the travel lane with one wheel in the turn lane to turn left (leaving the majority of the car in the travel lane). They fly down the right lane (right turn only at the end) to cut off the line of traffic at the light, which is only made worse by the unreasonably slow acceleration (the people who do 15 MPH for the first half mile) after a light. Then when you get to that 35 mph area, people dont immediately get into the thru lane, but wait 50 yards or so after it begins to decide to pull into it, often when there is a car already beside them (as for some reason, they always slow down to 25 in the left lane like they’re turning into DnD)..

  5. One needs to drive very defensively around Bangor lately. I’ll save the ranting, but I do drive around Boston once a month and notice less close calls down there.

    1. For all the “Boston driver” remarks around, we are used to close calls and are actually way down the list of bad driver cities. We are more attentive and possibly have better intersections because of it.

I’m actually a little scared of the lackadiasical way of the drivers(?) around Houlton when I go home.

      Thanks for the reply

        1. As my profile suggests, Oakfield (born and raised), 14 miles south on 95. Escaped in ’76 after NMVTI and a year of bad jobs and bad women :)
My whole family is still in the area. Why do you ask?

      1. I hear ya. somebody will come out there driveway even on a old road, stop and look with blind eyes and just when you get there they pull out and goose it to 20 mph. NOT JUST THE OLD FARMERS EITHER. sorry for the caps lock

          1. Oh, c’mon . We saw your past comments. He probably was in a rush to come over, smelling of beer and Diesel, the way you like ’em. Just wanted to talk about the Celtic’s loss and how the family is driving him nuts, huh? :)

This was a misdirected comment meant for Eyavabigun. Whoops! :)

    2. I TOALLY agree!  I feel safer in Boston because people can actually merge and yield without slowing down to a slow crawl.  It’s bad here because we don’t learn how to drive defensively.

      1. On ramps are called acceleration ramps (odd, that), not a stop sign to think about it. Some people don’t get what “merge” means. Boot it baby and seamlessly blend in! Get the show on the road! (Puns not intended, but still relevant.)  :-)

        1. I think you’re forgetting the “yield” sign at the end of the ramp. That means you have to stop if necessary; it’s not a license to shove traffic already on the interstate out of the right-hand lane.

          1. No, I haven’t forgotten how to keep looking over my left shoulder all the way up the ramp so I can blend (merge) in the safest way, and I WILL YIELD when necessary. Being on the Boston to Cape Cod corridor for 30 years of commuting and 35-40k a year with only one crash (college kids ran a light in Back Bay and T-boned me), I have a bit of a clue how traffic and the signs work. Thanks for the advice though….Any more?

This was a reply to ryanrobbims before it disappeared and magically reappeared hours later as a comment, not a reply. Strange workings with DISQUST….

          2. Since my reply to you has disappeared overnight (along with many other conversations on this story), I’ll do a cut and paste, as if it matters :)

    3. People seem to have “flagged me for review”. Curious.
For anyone who gives a squat, here’s a cut paste of it:

Damn it! Damn it all to H***! Not again! There seems to be more of this lately than here in Boston. A serious and heartfelt condolence to those left behind.

If some people or the moderator took offense and the the time to flag THAT, well….
(Thanks CMY6, for letting me vent here.)  :)

    4. Sorry I think that it’s just as bad there! After four years of weekly trips to the Boston area and beyond I have stated that people up here now drive like they do in Mass!

  6. I just left that area ten minutes before this happened. Had my daughter with me, my condolences to those families affected.  This is getting to be sad with road fatalities

  7. Hmm sometimes Breaking News is Ugly . God be with the deceased and there family at this time and also with anyone at fault . People don’t start there day lookin to hurt people . I think the Tarp covers the “GROSS” aspect . The car that rolled over all survived . Great response by The Fire and Police .

    1. actually the tarp is there to keep all possible evidence inside and uncontaminated while being transported to police crime lab

  8. I’ve noticed lately in Bangor that whenever my light turns green an additional 3 to 6 vehicles continue through their red light, and I have to sit & wait.  This isn’t an occasional thing.  I see it over & over.  I don’t know if that is what happened here, but people need to stop being in such a hurry & obey the lights.

This is a horrifying picture to look at, and my heart goes out to all involved in this tragedy.  We are reading about far too many terrible accidents recently here in Maine.

    1. I agree that does happen a lot where people run red lights.  I can tell you from personal experience that at this intersection I always count to 3 or 4 before I go through it and at least 2 to 3 cars zoom through it every time.  This is a very dangerous intersection and people need to slow down and pay attention.

      1. For sure. Major problem in Ellsworth as well. Sneaking under a yellow light is one thing. Cruising through, right in front of people who HAVE A GREEN LIGHT is rolling the dice.

        1. Right or wrong ,anyone that doesn’t look both ways before  proceeding is putting themselves at risk. Even if people are running the light. All the more reason to not jump on the gas. put the phone down and pay attention.

          Condolences to the family members.

      2. This is one intersection that NEEDS a red-light camera, I’ve almost got into accidents at this intersection before as well because of someone running their red light.  It is ABSURD how frequent it happens!  Just yesterday out at the Hogan Rd/Stillwater intersection, I counted FOUR vehicles that speed through a red light AFTER my lane had already turned green!!  They not only were holding up traffic they were putting themselves, their passengers, and other people at the intersection at serious risk.  Cops need to be camping out at a few of the most notorious intersections in town!

          1.  I think what you are seeing are traffic sensors that are plugged into the lights – designed to keep traffic flowing. There are a few on Stillwater Ave and a couple on Broadway. They do look a lot  like cameras … I thought they were until a police officer friend corrected me.

          2.  You give me a statute that says this, not just the word of a buddy, and THEN I will believe you.

          3.  Just went to mainelegislature.org, and did a search. The ONLY Motor Vehicle laws that I found to have been change/addressed/implemented in 2011 involve the color of the lights on top of certain vehicles (snow removal, wreckers, etc). Again, please show me a printed report that says this has gone into law, THEN I will believe you.

        1. What truly amazes me on Burleigh Rd, is there is always a cop camped out further down towards the intersection of Burleight and Kenduskeag trying to get speeders on the 45MPH area…why not move up the road a ways so they can also see the light…expecially with that bridge only allowing traffic one way…see one over there every day.

        2. the problem with red light cameras is that the town shorten the time between yellow and red to get more money, making it even more dangerous.

    2.  I have come close to being hit a couple times at the intersection of Broadway and Griffin road because people run red lights going out/in  Broadway. Even though you have the green light you have to drive defensive. It shouldn’t  take the police long to figure out what happen because they have cameras on all the lights.

      1. Those aren’t camera’s, they are sensors that detect vehicle presence which controls the light sequencing. The only reason I know is because they operate on “K” band radar and it trips off my radar detector when approaching this and other Bangor intersections. There is such a thing as “red light camera’s” and are employed throughout the U.S. If you run a red light, it takes a picture of your car, and you get a ticket mailed to you. Probably time for Bangor to get some.

          1. Some intersections in Bangor have actual video cameras and people mistake them for being red light cameras for catching red light runners.  That’s not the case at all.  Those video cameras are for detection only.  They’re hooked up to a video processor unit which tells the controller which direction needs a green signal.

          2.  Yes, but where is the follow up, saying that they have been allowed again? This just says a bill has been introduced.

          3. I have talked to the city electrical team and they state those are cameras.  There is no follow up in the paper, but i have been looking for it.  I believe the city electrical team though as they are the ones that do the lights

        1. bangor does have some… they’re not at everylight in town but are at some… they’re also one infront almost infront of burger king on union st that watches from there to the corner of union and griffin… unfortunitly they’re mostly in the downtown/casino area. and not dispursed very evenly through out bangor… maybe this will be a sad and unneeded eyeopener to get more

        2.  DC has them and they do work. I mean people get pictures of their license plates in the mail with a fine, but not sure it actually stops running lights.

      2. It still shouldn’t take them long to figure out what happened. Pretty common theme in Bangor these days.

    3. Exactly and it has gone on  for too long, lack of police presence doing patrols and radar duty during normal driving hours is what people are taking advantage of. In fact I almost got cleaned out at this same intersection yesterday because my light was green and on the opposite end when her light was red the woman sneaked out in front of a truck in the lane next to me going straight, while I was taking a right on Broadway toward Judson Heights and went out so far in front of us she had to go in the other lane to avoid me while I hit the curb and she turned off into the housing area at Judson heights (I hope she is reading this too)
This is what ignorance does at a red light. There are not many responsible drivers on the road
Bangor PD needs to step it up on red light runners, period, it is long overdue, I know I am asking that they actually work, but they need to step it up and quit patrolling for speeders and red light runners after 9 PM

      1. wow really?? ” i know i am asking that they actually work” …. i’m guessing your not a cop, nor know any cops. or you’d know the hard work they go through every single day. the sacrifices they and their families make. . . This is why police have such low application numbers… low pay. risk their lives every day. and damned if they do and damned if they don’t in the publics eyes… They can’t be everywhere at once all the time… before you go bashing on public service providers, please at least try walking a mile in their shoes as they literally risk their lives everyday for YOU

        1. I know plenty of cops thank you for your assumption. Here is BPDs problem:
Enforcing a law when they see it committed, as I said in a previous comment, I almost got hit in a crosswalk halfway across the road and a car goes right out in front of me with BPD right behind them, I watched the car go and then BPD go after I crossed, and they both went different directions.
3 years ago I watched a car from New York run a red light on Main St, Bangor PD sat right there and watched him do it. I blasted my horn and pointed at the car when BPD was about to turn the other way, then they decided to cut the wheel towards the offender and pulled him over, it is like you have to tell BPD how to do their jobs these days.
4 years ago when I lived in Bangor they sent an officer knocking on my door asking if I seen a gray cat, he stated they received reports of a sick looking cat around my apartment.
I asked if the city still had animal control and the officer replied “Yeah but for whatever reason they decide to send us out looking for a cat instead”
What a worthless call to make them go out on

I can call a State or a County officer in my hometown, they do the work. Period.
BPD, doesn’t, the only time I see BPD actually looking like they are doing something with speed is after 9PM, less traffic, less work to get to an offender

So before you think I need to walk a mile in their shoes, I seen their work, watching people almost get hit in a crosswalk, they almost hitting people in a crosswalk themselves, sent out on calls they shouldn’t handle, honk my horn at them to get them to do something, call in numerous noise complaints at 2 am nearly everyday before they finally do something about it 7 months later, yeah I know how Bangors finest works, thanks for your assumption. Watching them walk in their own shoes is just the same, I don’t need to walk in them. I have never seen a police department run this bad.

      2.  I travel that area frequently and I see police officers there almost every time. Not sure they can step up patrols in that area unless they have one dedicated to the area and parked right  there, and with budgets being with they are I doubt that’s happening.

        1. If they are in the are they don’t do anything, these guys do nothing about people nearly getting run over in a  crosswalk when they are right there watching it, so maybe patrol was the bad word to use, perhaps I should have used, enforcement.

        2. I live on outter Essex St and after a called regarding speeding cars I was told there is not enough officers for a regular patrol this far out.
Maybe we need only four Public works guys with one truck digging that hole or leaning on a shovel

    4. It’s not just in Bangor.  It happened to me the other day at the intersection of Routes 90 and 17 in West Rockport.  It’s very awkward and potentially dangerous for the driver who has the green light, and cars behind him, when cars coming from the opposite direction continue turning left in front of him even after their light has changed to red.  And I’m not talking about just one or two cars, either.  I’m talking about more than that and cars that speed up when they see the light changing and go through the red light turning in front of cars with the right of way.

    5. I see it everyday.  It happens because the lights in this town appear to have been timed and organized by Chimpanzee’s.  Can you believe that we actually employ people, on a Full-Time basis, with medical insurance, a pension and vacation, to manage the traffic flow in Bangor?  Hard to fathom. Perhaps the BDN could do a cost-benefit analysis within the City Engineering and Public Works departments.

    6. I have never seen more than a single vehicle run a red light in all the years I’ve lived in Bangor and it is rare that I do see a vehicle run a red light and I do a lot of driving. When you state you have seen 3 to 6 vehicles run a red light and it happens over and over I highly doubt you are telling the truth.

Does one run the red light? Yes, I will accept that and maybe even two but when people claim 3 or more run a red light and they see it happen often I will call BS.

      1. I’ve seen it on Oak St. at Hancock. People wanting to get through the light headed for the bridge.

        1. I make the left from Hancock onto Oak all the time so I have to ask. What time did it occur and how many vehicles did you see run the light? And by run I mean they clearly could have stopped but choose not.

      2.  Try State and North Main in Brewer, particularly at heavy travel time in the morning.  It’s not every day but 3+ cars through the red light is not all that uncommon.

      3. Unlike you, I don’t drive what I consider to be ‘a lot’ and I notice people on Broadway running lights more days than not. That road was not intended for the kind of use and traffic pattern employed everyday. One particularly bad spot for offenders is the red light intersection and on I95 ramp to Orono.

The others are every other red light on that street.

Another is the right on red turn onto Stillwater Avenue. Nobody stops. As far as I know ‘right on red’ means you can proceed on red  – AFTER you’ve stopped. The other day I watched ten cars file through without even slowing, one after the other, while people coming from the park area in back of St. Joe’s, who had the right of way, were forced to wait.

          1. He means the sign at the light when you’re getting off the Stillwater Exit and making a right.

The sign says “NO right turn on red”, which I agree with you, people zip right through there as if who ever is making a right turn has the right of way.

    7. One of the biggest problems is the way the city has the lights set up and the timer they are using.  Coming off of 95 South onto Broadway that light that turns right(you can only go on the green) is very short….as you travel down Broadway towards Giffords you are going to come to THREE more extremely short green arrows to go left off of Broadway and extended waiting times in between the next green.  I too have seen impatient drivers speeding up as the light turns yellow trying to make it through at all three of these lights: one in front of Walgreens, the next by the Smoke Shop, and the final on Burleigh road.  In addition to this i have many times tried to make a left out of Dunkins after getting coffee and unless you have a couple of football fields to get out there, the cars coming down the hill actually speed up so nobody cuts out in front of them and make them wait for another green light.   This is such a tragic accident and my prayers go out to all injured and the family of the deceased. Please Please Slow down folks, be coureous and remember that that person that has the close run in or accident could easily be YOU the next time.

    8.  I agree with you on the red light does not mean go.  I observe the same thing getting off 395 to head towards Bucksport.  Most every morning I wait while my light is green and look and wait for the color blind and the I can’t wait a minute to go thru the red light.

    9. Great Advice, slow down and enjoy life my brothers and sisters, life is to short to make it shorter than it needs to be, red means stop, green means=proceed with caution!

  9. …and now every parent with a teenager out on the road is crapping purple twinkies because this article has no actual information to offer aside from the fact that someone involved in a car accident is now deceased.

  10. PRCC confirming Bangor PD’s call…that Bangor wasn’t releasing information on….hold on, this could get ugly.

      1. My comment was posted before this article was updated so its not relevant any longer.  My point was it was Bangor’s call. Brewer assisted. It wasn’t PRCC’s call to confirm information.

      1. agreed!. IF witness accounts above are true, and said envoy clipped the toyota first BEFORE the headon collision and STILL managed to roll over… they were definitly speeding… sad… it’s almost always the innocent person in the wrong place at the wrong time… my condolences to all involved, may the family, friends, and all affected by the tragedy someday find peace and closure. may the at fault driver someday be able to deal with the mental anguish that will come from knowing that you took the life of another human being with your senseless actions and need to hurry up and get no where. . . god please bless the deceased and their loved ones. may she find peace in her final resting place, and may you comfort and help all who are hurt by this… thank you

    1. the answer to that is , yes you can………..if the other car is going 25 and you hit head on…….

        1. I apologize! I thought you asked a question and I didn’t see the comment JT Eastman wrote……….my mistake……………

        1. Myth busters are not always right, just watch the shows that go back to myths that have already aired.
The bottom line here is that drivers, not only here but all over this country are driving too fast! They seem to want to get there before “you”.

Does it matter how many cars are running red lights? One is too many. After four years of driving on a regular basis to Mass., I ca attest to the truth of the statements above!

  11. Someone please tell me that is NOT an arm i see. Have some tact, BDN! a different angle would have sufficed.

    1. And yet you looked at this hard enough to surmise that. It looks like a seat belt but yet I would not have even noticed unless I made it bigger and looked it all over… or if you pointed it out.

  12. When does 25MPH (posted speed limt) cause this type of aftermath? Just saying…If someone did run the light, most likely they sped up to beat the light.. so if they were going 35MPH, they might have increased their speed in this 25MPH zone to 45mph.. sad

  13. What’s really sick is the throngs of spectators (some even bringing lawn chairs) camped out at all the businesses around the accident scene acting like it’s some free concert in the park. Like all the parking lots are filled with people just there to gawk at the accident.

  14. We went for a motorcycle ride to get ice cream at Gifford’s on
this great evening and came across this horrific accident. Folks someone died
here tonight. Slow down, put the cell phone away and stop texting.  Our sincere condolences to the families.

  15. Description of what happened makes no sense at all heavy damage to the blue tarp vehicle on both ends and its setting at light out bound

    1.  I agree.  I’m having a hard time figuring it out.  The only explanations I can think of is that the Envoy somehow, after hitting the Camry, then skidded and then hit the back of the van and flipped onto the top of the van, then across to the corner of the road where it landed?  The other one is that the van was actually heading into town and got hit head-on and then spun around into it’s final position (facing North out of town), but that does not explain the damage to the back side of the van.  Either way, it’s incredibly sad and especially if the vehicle was just sitting there at a red light – they would have had no way to avoid anything.

  16. Worst intersection in bangor is this one and hammond and Ohio inbound on hammod blow through 3t 5vehicles in row after red this one is out bound speed in right lane and east to west speed on burleigh to griffin nice launch point in middle

  17. the woman killed in orland yesterday was a single mom from what i heard 33 years old

  18. Oh, that is terrible!  I dread driving in Bangor.  People drive too fast, they aren’t paying any attention (texting and talking on cell phones) and they rarely yield.  It’s a terrifying experience.  Walking in downtown is also downright deadly–they try and hit pedestrians for fun.

      1. Again, I agree with you Kevin. Bangor’s configuration is tricky the first time driving here, but besides that it isn’t as bad as EastofChamberlainNorth makes it out to be!

    1. I agree with the yield statement! Might as well take those signs down and save the expense to the state!

  19. I came upon this accident on my way into Bangor tonight.  I had my daughter in my car with me and we arrived at the intersection before there were any police or fire or ambulances, so I believe we missed it just by a few seconds or minutes, at most.  I literally gasped and when I turned down Griffin (as you obviously could not go through the intersection), I had to pull over and get my composure.  It was the worst accident scene I have ever seen and my heart just dropped, as I knew almost instantly that someone likely died.  My condolences to the families involved.  You have been in my prayers since the instant I saw the vehicles.  I do pray that everyone would be extra careful out there when you are driving.

  20. No, it is 25 past the blue townhouses and then past the church on the hill and only becomes 35 at the White House Insurance Agency.  It is going down a hill, and only becomes 35, just before Dunkin’
Donuts. Nobody does 25 on the part of the road that is posted as 25.  More like 40 or better. Then factor in that you are going downhill at a good clip and are then faced with traffic turning into Gifford’s.  It becomes a challenge then to slow down.

    1. “It becomes a challenge then to slow down.”

Which is EXACTLY why  it is posted at 25mph.

      1. The 35 zone starts right at the “Glad Tidings Church”.
It’s right on Google Street view, not that it matters,  as to do that much damage, the envoy had to have been flying.

  21. I thought texting was against the law as of last  year September. I would also find it highly unlikely that either one of a couple in their seventies was texting.

    1.  I doubt anyone of that age was texting while driving, but that it’s against the law doesn’t seem to be stopping people. I see it every day on my way to and from work.

    2. It doesn’t matter if it is against the law.  People still do it.  Every day.

  22. The lady in the camry that was hit is at St. Joe’s and seems to be ok…she told my husband the envoy was going at least 90 miles per hour when it hit the mini-van. I wouldn’t be surprised if that was a bit of an exaggeration, but the envoy was definitely criminally speeding when the accident occurred.

    1.  I don’t think it’s too exaggerated.  I have a family member who was at Giffords at the time.  That family member estimated the envoy’s  speed at 80mph. I have urged that member to contact police.  Hopefully that model has a “black box” which records vehicle information for accident review.  That would certainly answer a lot of questions.  That family member did state that the skid marks of the envoy were very long,  Too long for any reasonable speed.

  23. Thinking back over the past week, I think this makes fatality number 6. This includes the two who died on motorcycles. That is 6 too many! If you count the past 2 weeks, then the number goes up even more.

People need to slow down, put the phones away, and look one last time before pulling out into traffic.

My condolences go out to the friends and families of EVERY LIFE that has been lost on Maine’s roads over the past 2 weeks!

    1. Nice and well said comment.
Now if we can only get people to heed your advice….  No, stuff will still happen  :(

  24. Hasn’t some Envoys had acceleration issues where the vehicle speeds up on it’s own?  I’m not sure if I’m correct and obviously no one knows if that is what happened in this accident.  I don’t know what would possess anyone to go THAT fast at any intersection on purpose.  That’s just insane.

  25. I was there. It was horrific. The pictures doesn’t do it justice. I feel for the elderly couple. They were already across the intersection heading into Bangor, the SUV slide sideways, then hit them head on and turned them completely around before rolling over.

  26. I was there, it was truly horrific. The Envoy clipped the smaller car, slid sideways, hit the minivan who was already through the light and traveling towards Bangor, spun it around completely before going airborn and flipping. He was going at least 80. We all ran to help. The minivan and Envoy was on fire, thankfully that was put out. We tried to help with the elderly couple. It was chaotic, however bravo to everyone who stepped up to the plate to help. From directing traffic to crawling inside the minivan to help try to stabalize the elderly man.

    1. 80 is screaming has to be stuck throttle can’t imagine anything else descriptionomamakes sense now though

      1. A few years back a young man died on a motorcycle going faster than 80 just up the road from there. That wasn’t a stuck throttle.
Let’s stop making guesses and arguing about it was right for the media to put up pictures ( don’t forget it was ont WABI tv news also last night), and pray for the families of the injured and the deceased!
Maybe mOre importantly, SLOW down and pay attention while driving!

    2.  Wow, props to those of you who stepped up and helped.  I came upon the scene just after it happened, and I did not stop as it seemed like there were literally already 100 people there trying to help direct traffic and help the people.  The first fire truck was just arriving after I turned onto Griffin.  So sad.
Your description of how it happened makes sense to me, as I could not imagine the van being damaged the way it was if it was simply sitting at the light waiting to leave Bangor (as other accounts have stated).  It makes more sense that it was hit head-on and spun around, which is entirely possible with the speed of the Envoy.

  27. “… involved three vehicles and eight people, seven that were taken or drove themselves…”

“That” refers to objects. “Who” refers to people: “… seven WHO ewre taken or drove themselves…”

Additionally, if a witness won’t give a name, they should not be quoted. We’re not talking national security here. (Even then, a reporter should always state why confidential sources don’t want to be identified.)

Eagerly awaiting a full account of everyone’s life, as presented on Facebook…

    1. The reporter has the name of the witness, but is not compelled to report that name.  And, there’s nothing wrong grammatically with using ‘that’ following the pronomial use of ‘seven’.

      1. “Who” is always used  when the antecedent is human. This is Writing 101.

Second, it is poor journalism to rely on anonymous sources without a compelling reason. A witness to a car crash who (not “that”) doesn’t want to be named is not a compelling reason to withhold that information from readers. The reporter might as well be making things up to spice up the story. Who would ever know?

  28. I’ve seen a lot of dangerous driving in my 38 years licensed; but no matter where you go, some people are distracted because of cell phones, texting, eating, doing their makeup, etc., etc. I’m amazed up here in Lincoln sometimes with disregard for stop signs or traffic lights. The street I live on reminds me at times of a freeway the way traffic speeds up and down through here. Pay attention and be a part of lowering the accident statistics.

  29. In my former life I was an EMT. I saw way too much of this stuff. People need to slow down, buckle up, and obey the traffic laws. I travel in on Route 15 several times a week and I drive the speed limit. I always get tail gated.

  30. What does yield mean to one from the Houlton area? To one from Presque Isle and who “escaped” in 76 too, it means yield the right of way, not hurry up and let me in front of you!

  31. I will say one thing I am glad this was my night off! This type of thing is happening too much of late, but it means more X-rays for me to do so job security

  32. I missed the lawn chairs when I drove by but I do agree with the ” what’s wrong with people” statement. But they say that people go to auto races hoping for a.wreck you know.

  33. People stop with bashing people for speed this can be a stuck throttle several reports online about envoys with this issue Google it

  34. Went by the accident this morning, the skid marks start before the giffords entrance all the way to the intersection. A set of 3 skid marks, which would suggest the Envoy was turned at an angle so that a front wheel was lined up with the opposite rear wheel after it clipped the camry, or one of the wheels was off the ground as it was skidding down the road. Still broken glass where the Envoy clipped the Camry, but turning the corner on to Griffin, I saw the city sweeper.

  35. Like someone else said some GMC Envoy’s have a history of badly stuck throttles. Someone may have panicked if this happened. Let the police do their investigation first before you attack the driver of the GMC for being reckless or crazy .

    1. I just did a quick internet search and the only results I found for stuck throttles are toyotas.  Can you site your research?

        1. I guess i have to disagree with you on the definition of many.  The phrase “gmc envoy stuck throttle” returned 3 relevant links for me, though one of the links was to a forum message that did have 34 replies.  Compare that to “Toyota stuck throttle” relevant results and it’s a miniscule number.

    1.  How do we know the lady who lost her life wasn’t wearing a seat belt?

Correct me if I am wrong, but another fatal accident this weekend, where someone lost their life, she was wearing her seat belt.

      1.  You are correct. The woman who lost her life in Orland 2 days ago was wearing a seat belt. It says ‘she died of massive trauma, despite wearing her seat belt’ right in the article.

  36. So I get flagged for the truth. I’m sad for the families and condolences to all. Problem is as I read here, people driving through RED LIGHTS!!! WTH PEOPLE!!! Please slow down and STOP ON RED!!!

    1. Apparently a lot of people think road rules do not apply to them.

Example, at the intersection near Bangor Mall (straight across you have Old Navy, A C Moore) to the right you have the Mall — right there it has a “No turn on red” sign, I guarantee you every time I pull up there every car in the lane next to me will turn. Why? Because they think the rules/laws do not apply to them.

Too many selfish people in the world now a days. Too many people who dont care about anyone but themselves, and sometimes that has tragic consequences.

My condolences to the victims family.

      1. I think the no turn on red sign only applies to the outside right turn lane (the one on the left), as the sign is with that lane’s light. I don’t believe it applies to the inside one.

I could be wrong though, and would appreciate being corrected in a polite manner if I am!

        1.  The no turn on red sign applies to both right hand turning lanes.  It is not safe to turn right on red there because there is traffic coming from so many different directions.

          1.  Wellnessmama is right.

Both lanes have a solid red arrow. A solid red arrow indicates no right turn on red.

        2.

C-1. A red light, if a steady arrow, means the operator may not enter the intersection to make the movement indicated by that
          arrow. [2003, c. 452, Pt. Q, §37 (NEW); 2003, c. 452, Pt. X, §2 (AFF).]I looked up the Maine road law : )

          1.  Thanks! I looked  it up too, after you posted this, because I read your reply too quickly, and was confused. I skipped the word ‘arrow’, and read it to mean that a right on red wasn’t legal at all. Now that I’ve slowed down, and read it CORRECTLY, I’m clear! Thanks for the clarification!

        3. At the I95 and Stillwater lights, there is no Left turn ever. A right on red is still possible. I understand this is due to the residents of a near by development who tried to prevent that shopping center from going in there. I think it is a pain not being able to turn right so I have to go into the lot and turn around.

          1.  I know that a left is not possible. And, after looking up the statute myself that Bangahrang posted, it is NOT legal (possible, because people do it, but not legal) to make a right on red coming off I-95. The lights there are red arrows, and the statute clearly states that right on red is only allowed when the red light is circular. Arrows mean no turn.

          2. You would be completely wrong! But why am I not surprised.

a SOLID red arrow means, no right turn! it really is quite simple. if you don’t believe me, call the DMV office and ask them. They even put up a sign for people that says, “NO RIGHT TURN ON RED” — I don’t know how much more explanation you would need, or info, to understand that, hello, there is no right turn on red!

C-1. A red light, if a steady arrow, means the operator may not enter the intersection to make the movement indicated by that
            arrow. [2003, c. 452, Pt. Q, §37 (NEW); 2003, c. 452, Pt. X, §2 (AFF).]

AM I taking up copy space again? Oh dear! But hey, look, you learned something today, you were wrong and I am right and now if you obey the rules of the road you won’t get a ticket or worse, kill someone. You are really welcome!

      2. I have been at that intersection and had cars behind me honking angrily and shouting because I wouldn’t turn.  There is NEVER a police car there.  It’s infuriating.  How do you get your license without knowing what a red arrow means?

        1.  It beats me. I empathize, I have the same issue, people honking because I won’t break the law. I don’t know how they fail to understand a steady red arrow and a sign that says “don’t turn” means, hey, don’t turn!

  37. une 11, 2012
As a result of a three car accident yesterday at about 6PM near the
intersection of Broadway and Burleigh Roads, 68 year old Diane Morrison
of Bangor died as a result. Her passenger and driver, 72 year-old Ralph
Morrison was transported to Eastern Maine Medical Center’s Emergency
room and his condition is not known at this time.
The Morrison’s vehicle, a 2007 Hyundai, was headed north on Broadway
when it collided with a 2000 Toyota operated by 71 year old Wynona
Butera of Bangor, also headed north on Broadway. Passengers in her car,
71 year old Evelyn Dowdy, and 90 year old Mary Cox were either
transported or went to a local emergency room on their own and
conditions are not known at this time. The Morrison’s vehicle
careened off the 2000 Toyota and struck a third vehicle head on, that
was travelling south on Broadway at the intersection, a 2002 GMC
operated by 46 year old Lisa Pelkey of Eddington. Her passengers, 47
year old Raymond Pelkey and 11 year old Alyssa Pelkey, along with Lisa,
were all transported to EMMC Emergency Room and their conditions are
    also unknown at this time.

This was from the Bangor Police Department. It is confusing to read, because it says the Toyota hit the mini van, but in the BDN it says the GMC hit the mini van. Right? It also reads as if the GMC was the 3rd car to be hit and not the cause of the accident, but the mini van caused the 3 car pile up.

    1. I ‘m pretty sure we all can read the above article , but thanks for taking up space with the copy

      1.  Thanks for being so ignorant and rude. Do you work hard to be that way? Make ya feel REALLY good inside to be rude? get your thrill for the day? Pat yourself on the back thinking you were clever, and oh so funny and smart? Wow, must be awesome to be you, to look in the mirror and be oh so perfect! I am in awe of your grammatical prowess!

BTW, could you point me in the direction of the info on the BDN where it says you have the right to judge what other people can and can not post and make you dictator, ruler, and expert on what is relevant and ok to post?

yeah, that’s what I thought. Shut up!

  38. Said it before, saying it again….people do not respect moving vehicles as potential lethal weapons. Whether you are going 75 on the 95 or going 40 on Broadway, you are navigating a steel machine that can turn into a death trap if you are not paying FULL ATTENTION to your driving.  Keep your eyes and your mind on the road, watch what is going on all around you, look ahead and anticipate possible hazards or the need to stop, and take NOTHING for granted. The “right of way” does not mean the “right to live,” unfortunately. I’m sure everyone knows several total idiots who walk around them every day….those same total idiots also probably drive and they don’t automatically smarten up when they get behind a wheel.  Assume you will have to protect yourself from and navigate around those idiots whenever you drive. Then assume that you will have to do the same with people who are not necessarily idiots but who have their minds….and often their eyes….everywhere but on the road.  We can’t avoid every accident but we sure can avoid a lot of them if we just PAY ATTENTION!!

  39. Even if you did a million traffic surveys, posted 100 lights, 200 Yield signs, 500 Stop signs, 600 Dangerous Curve signs, 900 25 MPH signs.   Even if you blamed and investigated the Public Works, as one poster suggested, along with the traffic schematics, what good would it do?

    Road civility is dead.

Who actually stops at a Stop sign, or a flashing Red light?  Who Yields? Who throttles back to 25 mph? Who slows for Road Work Ahead?  Who bothers to signal?  Anyone you know drop down to 15 in a School Zone?   Who cares about the No Texting law? The Cell Phone Lsw?  Or, even fixing your make-up, gulping back coffee, sodas and beer? Or, even reading the paper, while driving?

Besides all of the above, try to stay awake so you can dodge the OUI’s, and those operating under the influence of Monkey Dust,Marijuana, Crack and Cocaine.

Other than that, Maine is one of the most  beautiful states in America.  So much to see. If you dare take a peek while driving.

Laws, signs, probes, traffic patterns mean nothing, if the people behind the wheel ignore them.

  40. I can’t believe how they have turned this story around 2 witness say the opposite last night trust me I doubt there is video this ain’t London where everyone is video 24 7 in public

  41.  He is an older man, who probably was have a health issue at the time of the accident. He is in a coma now and his wife just died.(in this accident) You know what they say about when you ass-u-me.
