ORLAND, Maine — Students, parents and chaperones safely escaped a school bus in Orland after it caught fire while in motion Tuesday afternoon, police said.

After a few passengers alerted the bus driver of smoke coming from the back, the driver promptly stopped the vehicle on Front Ridge Road and evacuated everyone around 1:30 p.m., Maine State Police Trooper Benjamin Sweeney said.

“The bus driver did a good job,” the trooper said.

The Orland and Bucksport fire departments were on the scene to contain the fire, Sweeney added. A cause has not yet been determined.

The vehicle was owned by First Student School Bus Transportation Services, the trooper said.

  1. WNSX 97.7 is reporting that the school bus driver was Heidi Nolan. Great job.  So glad no one was injured!

  2. Great job for all involved.  This could have been disastrous.  Front Ridge Road.  Wow!  Right after the corporate office of First Student???  Guess this must have happened very quickly for the driver not to have had time to pull into the headquarters!

  3. what kind of bus was it? A, B, C or D? How many kids on board? how much damage to school bus?  cause of fire?  was it a fire or smoke only?  what did FD do? water? foam? update please?

    1. I will answer your questions in the order that you asked them:

Doesn’t matter.  Also doesn’t matter.  The only question that does matter, but the answer is more than one and less than one million.  Too much.  It said in the article that the fire department contained the fire.  See previous answer.  Something to put out the fire.

      Hope that helps!….
