OTIS, Maine — A bear made it out alive after it was struck by a slow-traveling vehicle in Otis late Monday night, police said, but the impact was enough to leave a little behind.
“There was a little fur left on the car,” Deputy Luke R. Gross of the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department said.
After responding to the call of Shonna Roy, 57, of Mariaville, the deputy said he couldn’t find the bear anywhere in the immediate area, indicating that it probably survived the crash. Gross added that Roy’s vehicle just turned onto Pyle Road and began accelerating before the bear was hit.
Gross said he was surprised by the bear call because he hasn’t responded to one in a while.
“This is the first bear crash I’ve covered in a decade,” Gross said.
The deputy said he had noticed an abundance of wildlife that day including six porcupine, two deer, a raccoon and a fox. Gross said he attributed the abundance to the recent rainy weather.

Those of us with cottages on Beech Hill Pond have been asking for something-anything for the taxes we pay every year. No trash collection, very little camp road maintenance for the thousands collected from the lake. Oh yea- the town does spend some money for fireworks every 4th. Finally a bear is hired to entertain us ….and it’s nicked by a car. Uh Oh …nothing meaner than a wounded bear…
Whatever you do, never ever ask for more services.
My taxes are 6 times what they were 25 years ago on the same camp. There are no services. I’d just like to get something without begging the town.
It was always my understanding that the fireworks display was provided by George Dunn along with whatever donations collected from customers at the local store.
I believe the town provides $5,000.00.
Lets start with, you are more than likely not a local if you have cottages on the pond. Second, if you would like those types of services then please sell your cottages and stay in the city. This is small town Maine, not the big city. The Dunn’s do fundraisers and leave collection buckets out to help defer some of the costs, I’ve never seen a line in the town tax report stating that the residents taxes go towards the event. So do us a favor, either stop complaining and love everything the small town Maine is all about or sell you place and go back to whatever big city you come from. Enuff said!
My bride and I have a camp on the lake and we’re local folks who would like to get a little something back for all the taxes we pay. Your presumption that camp owners want big city services is specious and dim-witted. Regular grading of the road, some calcium chloride, and plowing in the winter is a reasonable expectation.
So, do us a favor and stop assuming we’re all from the big city.
The bear was given a ticket for j-walking.
