AMHERST, Maine — A two-vehicle crash on Route 9 early Friday evening has claimed the life of a local man and left another man injured, a Maine State Police trooper said.
The names and ages of both men were being withheld Friday night, Trooper Cliff Peterson said. He did say, however, that both of the motorists were from the region.
Peterson said the accident happened about 6:45 p.m. near the Amherst General Store when two vehicles collided nearly head-on.
One of the drivers died at the scene and the other was taken by ambulance to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where he was receiving treatment for injuries that Peterson said are not considered life-threatening.
Anyone who witnessed the crash should call Peterson at 866-2121.
Maine roads have been deadly the past few weeks.
I was thinking the same thing…
All roads are deadly all the time. The lack of news in Maine puts these events on the front page but this is something that happens at the same rate if not at a higher rate every where.
If data was to be compared to last year I’m willing to bet it would show in increase for this time of the year. Maine has seen a lot of traffic deaths in the past month.
Maine averaged 170 fatalities a year from 06-10 and last year had the lowest amount since 1959 at 136. I do not know how many we have had through the year so far but I am willing to bet it is not above average.
edit: May 14th of this year BDN reports 46 fatalities, up from 30 last year which would put things just about average.
edit2: Just did the math and it puts us way below average. If you consider May to be 5/12ths of the year or 41% with the total fatalities being 46 and compare it to 41% of 170 which is 69 fatalities.

I was driving out of Orland towards Bucksport Thursday evening a even with a great pair of polarized prescription sunglasses, the low setting sun was blinding…it was impossible to see, and the newly paved road had no lane markings. Driving is a serious, life-or-death experience, and we often forget that. Everyone of these accidents is a tragic, heartbreaking event for the families of those involved, and no words can ease their pain. Let’s all arrive alive.

Heard from a reliable source that they are not “local”. They really should not publish news like this that gives misleading info.
A) no one knows if she was imparied or not.
B) since we don’t know A we cannot assume anyone was sleeping anything off.
C) no one has gotten “away” with anything yet. Last I checked she was charged with a felony and that is far from getting “away with it”.
Ms. Giles knows if she was impaired and she communicated that by driving home and trying to remove the evidence. Also check to see what the driver who engaged in the same behavior that resulted in the death of Jordan Bakley was charged with. Then tell me Ms. Giles hasn’t gotten away with something. Or rather, as you are so fond of, tell me what God says about it.
And since I know you are going to flag my comment jd2008jd I would just like to show you that I will keep posting. I will stop when your God strikes me down.

Giles is being charged with what she can be charged for under the law. If you don’t like it run for political office and change the law.

I learned a long time ago to listen to people’s actions. And hers spoke volumes.
None of which is admissible in a court as evidence. Her actions show blatant disregard for human life but that is about it.
Yes and that human life was named Joshua Constantine. And his daughter is not baking him Father’s Day cookies this year. Or next year. Or the year after that. So you may feel as smug as you like that Ms. Giles will not have to suffer the full legal consequences of her actions.

I deal in cold hard facts. And the facts are this. Giles drove a vehicle that struck Constantine. Rather than stopping like most decent human beings would do she decided to drive off. Why? I don’t know and neither do you but drive off she did. She left Constantine to die in the street like an animal. She returned to her home in Brewer and then attempted to remove the windshield that was damaged in the hit and run. Why? Presumably to hid the damage to the motor vehicle. She is being charged with the crimes that the police uncovered and presumably the DA can prove to a jury of 12 of her peers. She faces 5 years (if I recall correctly) in prison if she is convicted. Not much time for taking a human life but that is the penalty she faces. Don’t like the penalty, run for political office and CHANGE the law.
So, if you decide to respond to this post please focus on the substance of the post and please do not put words in my mouth or try to determine what I am feeling because you have no flipping clue.
