AMHERST, Maine — Maine State Police has identified the man who was killed in a two-vehicle crash on Route 9 early Friday evening.

Adam Dunham, 28, of Orland, died at the scene.

The other driver, Robert York, 59, of Calais was taken by ambulance to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor with injuries that were not life threatening, according to a Maine State Police press release.

Maine State Trooper Cliff Peterson said the accident happened about 6:45 p.m. near the Amherst General Store when the two vehicles collided nearly head-on.

An investigation revealed Dunham had been traveling west on Route 9 and that his Chevrolet Cavalier veered across the centerline and into the path of the pickup being driven by York that was traveling east, the release states.

There were no passengers in either vehicle at the time of the accident.

Investigators are still trying to determine why Dunham crossed the centerline. The accident is being reconstructed by Ellsworth police officer Chad Wilmont and forensically mapped by Warden Investigator Kevin Anderson.

  1. it doesnt matter about the seat belt, i came upon the scene and knew a mother had lost a child, there was so much destruction at the scene. there was sure to be a fatality, so sorry,  wish it had a different outcome, another angel in heaven

    1. I realize in some cases the seatbelt doesn’t matter. Sounds like this was the case here but for your information pam hearn… I read about several accidents/fatalities daily in BDN and I am keeping track of how many die because they are ejected from the vehicle.

    2. There is an epidemic of crossing the center line.  One should put their affairs in order before
      going to run an errand!!!!!!

      1. I agree; an epidemic; and it must be distractions.  Has to stop and it begins at the end of my nose. Am being much more cautious about MY driving since seeing this happening.

        1. Take care while crossing roads, too.  If someone hits and leaves you lying dead in the road, then runs, and tries to remove the evidence, they will only face a charge that carries at the most a five year sentence.  That would probably make your death much harder to deal with for your family friends.

  2. And the road carnage continues. This year is going to be a record setter. Not good. What’s going on?

  3. Why is the Ellsworth Police way out on Rt. 9?  I didn’t think Ellsworth went way out there, and why is the warden service there,  did they hit a moose or deer?

    1. From the article:  The accident is being reconstructed by Ellsworth police officer Chad Wilmont and forensically mapped by Warden Investigator Kevin Anderson.

One has to pay attention to what they are doing. It is not unheard of to bring in another agency to do these sort of things.

      1. He did the accident on Orland last weekend as well. A Certified Officer has to be called in on every fatal accident.  Agencies loan these officers out in such situations.

    2. It’s called the best use of scarce resources.  Each department has officers that have specialized training.  When a serious incident like this occurs, the call goes out for assistance.  Obviously, an Ellsworth officer and a Warden offered their assistance.

    3. i agree randy worked many accidents in amherst aurora as being the former fire chife of aurora never had ellsworth come t do that was state police and the warden service they never get out of ther trucks

  4. you have no clue what happen, and thats not a very nice comment to post concidering a young child jus lost their father, a wife lost her husband, a mother and father lost their son, along with many other relatives; and alot of us lost a friend. 5. Adam was one of my best friends. He was amazing! I want to Know if he had his dog with him. This man was one of the most amazing guys he will be so missed.

      1. He did have his dog and he did die too. I wish they had put that in the article. I loved him and “Bubba” (the dog). They were the best. He is the most amazing man ever and Bubba the best dog and I would say that without this tragic event. He was my best friend.
