PORTLAND, Maine — It’s unusual enough to come across a 1-in-a-million blue lobster, but a Portland lobster dealer is holding onto three rare bright-colored lobsters at the same time.

Pete McAleney of New Meadows Lobster has a bright blue, a bright orange and a calico lobster in a holding tank at his Portland business. They are in stark contrast to lobsters’ normal mottled green-and-brown color.

McAleney says having a single rare-colored lobster is uncommon, but having three at the same time is extremely unusual.

Lobster scientists say encountering orange or calico lobsters is even less likely than blue lobsters. Until 2 or 3 years ago, biologists said a calico lobster was a 1-in-30-million find, but now say the odds need to be recalculated.

  1. I’ve seen all those colors at one time, plus the ol’ half and half. Half normal, half yellow. Back when Little Bay had a location on Vinalhaven.

  2. I would be interested in the statistics that bring us to the conclusions of these 1 in … million …gazillion… or 1 in 20. It would probably trace to the same people creating an industry explaining our resource and their  wicked smart if you listen. Now they are laying the ground work to tax us another 3million.
School is the answer , go further your education and become a parasite on an industry crying out ideas and or science which really does nothing to bring solutions to a problem . but, hey if you been schooling for 4-8 years someone ought to pay the bills might as well be a dumb old fisherman.

  3. Why is everybody always worried about color! Lets all stop being raciest and cook them things up they all turn red in the end anyway.
