FORT KENT – Robert Hayward Jones died peacefully June 25, 2012, surrounded by his family at a Fort Kent health care facility. He was born May 24, 1919, son of the late Robert and Adeline (Mills) Jones.
In his early years he worked for Great Northern Co. and Pinkham Lumber. Bob was an avid fisherman and hunter, who enjoyed staying at his camp in Cross Lake. Bob enjoyed playing bridge and cribbage. He served in the European Theater and landed on the beach in the invasion of Normandy and continued as a tank commander into Munich, Germany, earning a Bronze star and Purple Heart for his service. Bob also received an award from the government of France for his contribution in the fight to liberate France from the Axis Powers in World War II.
He is survived by his daughter, Roberta and her husband, Gaston Pelletier, of Fort Kent; three grandchildren, Brother Athanasius Pelletier of Mount Morris, Mich., Celeste and her husband, Kevin Wise, and Michael Pelletier; one great-granddaughter, Emilie Jane Wise, all of Cheektowaga, N.Y.; one sister-in-law, Esther Jones; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife, Germaine Jones, in 1997; one brother, Philip Jones; and two sisters, Helen and Roberta.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Friday, June 29, at St. Louis Catholic Church, Fort Kent. Committal services with full military honors will be afterward in the parish cemetery. Those who wish may donate in his memory to Edgar J. Paradis Cancer Fund, 194 East Main St., Fort Kent, ME 04743. Services are being conducted by Daigle Funeral Home, Fort Kent.
