BANGOR, Maine — A sinkhole that started to grow in the center of Middle Street has closed the roadway, Bernie Keene of the Bangor Public Works department said Thursday.
“We’ve closed the road because it’s so large,” he said of the sinkhole.
Middle Street, a one-way street near the downtown, is closed between High Street and Columbia Street.
The opening in the ground is about 3 feet around and several feet deep, but it also extends up under the pavement, a Bangor Daily News photographer at the scene said.
A public works dispatcher said Thursday night that the sinkhole was caused by a sewer line collapse.
He said that Middle Street remained closed as of 9 p.m. as a public works construction crew and a crew from the Bangor Sewer District would remain at the site until the sewer line and street are repaired. It was not clear Thursday night when that would occur.

Did the “Bangor Daily News photographer at the scene ” take an photographs?
He took a video. Not a very good one though.
