WARREN, Maine — A Rockland couple were flown by LifeFlight helicopters to a Lewiston hospital Saturday afternoon after a motorcycle crash.
A 1989 Yamaha motorcycle driven by 75-year-old Richard Connell of Rockland was heading north on Route 1 in Warren when it struck the left rear of a 1997 Ford truck, also heading north, that was driven by a 17-year-old motorist, according to a news release issued by the Knox County Sheriff’s Office. The crash threw both Richard Connell and his wife, Margaret Connell, 72, from their motorcycle.
Because of the seriousness of their injuries, the two were flown to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. A telephone message was left with the nursing supervisor to find out the condition of the couple.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation. The crash occurred at noon near North Pond Road.
The teen driver of the truck was taken to Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening. The department is not releasing his name because he is a minor.
The Knox County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Warren Fire and Rescue crew members. Two ambulances from Waldoboro also responded to the crash scene.
Thomaston police and Maine State Police assisted with traffic control as Route 1 traffic was rerouted for a short time, according to the sheriff’s department.
The sheriff’s office said it would release more information when it was available.

Wish all those involved a complete and speedy recovery!
Really? Really? An elderly couple seriously injured and you make a tasteless crack? We wonder why crime is rampant, the value of others lives is lower than the dollar.
Richard and his wife are very nice folks and I hope they will both be okay… Sounds very serious…
Hopeful for a complete recovery for both of them. Besides that I hope I’m still riding my bike when I’m 75.
This is so sad and I sure hope they both make a full recovery. That being said, I have seen so many people their age sitting around the house being bored and depressed. I’m so happy that they were doing something they enjoyed at that age. Thoughts are with them and their families.
Speedy recovery to everyone.
Was the 17 year old ” distracted ” ?
the article says that the mc hit the left rear bumper. It wouldn’t matter if the 17 y.o. was distracted, the bike hit from behind, which makes it the m/c drivers fault. I learned that lesson the hard way when I hit another vehicle I was behind.
if you hit someone from behind …. it is totally your fault ….. that’s why you DON’T tailgate!
unless somebody pulls out in front of you when you are too close to stop. that would be failure to yield right of way. The article doesn’t say if he was following this car or it just appeared in front of him.
Why do you ask that? He was hit from behind.
The article doesn’t state whether or not the motorcyclists were wearing helmets or not. I only ask because everytime there is a car crash, they always state whether or not they were wearing seat belts. Helmets should be mandatory like seat belts.
I can almost tell you they where wearing helmets.Because when there is a crash and they dont have them on thats the first thing they will tell you.But if the people where wearing them and even get killed they dont say a word.HMMMMMMMMMMMM isnt that funny.Aslo I have witnessed two accidents where three people would not have died if they had not had seat belts on.Upside down and could not get the belt unhooked. Three burned to death for that reason.
