WARREN – Chris Storer died Jan. 2, 2012, at an Ellsworth health care facility after a brief illness this past winter. Chris was born Feb. 24, 1951, in Los Alamos, N.M., son of John B. Storer and Margaret Jean (Calderwood) Storer.
Chris attended schools in Bar Harbor and Gaithersburg, Md., and was an undergraduate at University of Maine, Orono. During high school he was very active in athletics, participating in football, basketball and baseball. He was a plumber by trade, but loved to read, write, travel and play sports. In the last two years of his life he reconnected with many old friends and made several new ones. His best character traits were listening to others and giving them encouragement – even when his own situation may have been more dire than theirs. While covering Mount Desert Island sports in the 70s for Bar Harbor Times, he coined the phrase “The Green Machine” for Mount Desert Island Trojans. Other highlights of his life in addition to getting together regularly with his friends, included his restaurant, known as Bait Shed – where Havana’s is now, and playing softball in an ASA sanctioned tournament in Las Vegas, and finishing in eighth place out of 80 teams. His team was made up of his two brothers and many former high school “stars” from Bar Harbor. He was living and working in Flagstaff, Ariz., at the time and raised the money from local businesses back home to fly the team out using a neighbors borrowed phone. Chris was very knowledgeable about U.S. history and considered a weeklong stay in Normandy for the 60th anniversary of DDay, one of the great honors of his life.
He was predeceased by his parents. Chris is survived by two brothers, Michael and wife, Madeleine, of Warren, and Stephen and companion, Paula Marie, of Bar Harbor; sister, Katharine Storer of Bangor; and nephews, Shea and John.
At Chris’ request there was no formal service. An informal gathering was held for Chris by his close childhood friends this past weekend at Donnell Pond.
