CHARLESTON, Maine — Two inmates who escaped from Charleston Correctional Facility on Sunday evening were still on the lam, a Maine Department of Corrections official said early Tuesday evening.
Randall Moulton, 20, of Bangor and Phillip Gardiner, 24, of Belfast were the subject of a manhunt Monday along Route 221, near the Glenburn School.
Judy Plummer, a corrections department spokeswoman, said Monday that the two men “just walked out” of the minimum-security facility, which has no perimeter fence.
“The collaborative effort to find and apprehend the two prisoners continues between the Department of Corrections and state and local police,” she said in an update issued Tuesday evening.
“The department thanks everyone for their continued support and efforts,” she said.
Moulton is serving a sentence for burglary and theft by unauthorized taking or transfer, according to Plummer. He began his sentence on June 7 and was scheduled to be released in September 2013 and be on probation until 2014.
He is described as a white male, 6 feet tall, weighing 180 pounds with brown hair and hazel eyes.
Gardiner had been incarcerated for burglary, robbery and criminal threatening since November 2009, Plummer said. He was scheduled to be released in November 2014 and to be on probation until 2018, she said.
Gardiner is white, 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighs 144 pounds and has brown hair and blue eyes.
“It is a felony to assist the escapees in any way,” Plummer said Tuesday, adding that Moulton and Gardiner each face up to five additional years in prison for their escape.

Hmmmm. Is it really ESCAPE when you simply walk away from a prison that has no fences?
Yes it is!
under who’s watch of the state of Maine area
all these jail breaks occurring?
I’m going with the commissioner of corrections…..
If he would let them have a proper number of staff, they could actually look after the inmates. Its a sad situation, and one that needs to be addressed before this happens again or someone get killed. We, the public need to start addressing these issues on our own, before its to late. We need answers!!
How about a real update. Like where the police are looking for them or where they think they may be headed. Maybe everyone should just sleep with one eye open and the shotgun loaded
Someone is helping them. They aren’t out doing this on their own. They, when caught need to be prosecuted. These idiots have scumbag friends.
They can most certainly do this alone, with no outside help. You speak like the DOC and police in Maine are intelligent.
If the DOC does not feel its important enough to have a fence to keep their inmates in…why is it important enough for the Police to search for them to bring them back? Why are our tax dollars being flushed down the drain becuase of the DOC cant do their jobs.
Run Forrest Run!!
They searched the Newport area. My house was surrounded the other night with DOC, State troopers and police dogs. They had ties to the people that formerly lived here. Those people now just live around the corner. They just moved out a few months ago so I am keeping doors locked, my eyes open, and have faith once they hear the deep bark of my dog they would think twice before entering.
the guy only had 2 months left now he is looking at 5 years when he is caught lol. with all the time in prison to think this guy didn’t . oh and maybe a fence around the place would help . im sure maine can afford it .
