PORTLAND, Maine — The Cumberland County Federal Credit Union on Washington Avenue was closed for the remainder of the day Wednesday after a man with a prosthetic leg crashed into the building.

Stephen Wich, 28, of Portland, told the BDN he struggled with his car’s brake pedal when pulling into a handicapped space at the 1345 Washington Ave. Wednesday morning. Wich said he was not hurt in the accident, but the crash smashed a window at the credit union and the branch was closed for the day afterward.

A sign on the door of the credit union informed customers of the closure and apologized for the inconvenience.

The crash occurred just prior to 9:30 a.m.

  1. Why mention that this man has a
prosthetic leg?? It says it more then once in the article. I never see headlines like “man with two legs crashed into bank”  Just think that it didnt really need to be stated he is just like anyone with real living limbs or not. Sorry
Stephen it sucks you crashed your car hope not too bad of damage.

    1. I agree with you unless the cause of the accident is being attributed to  the driver having been impaired by his prothesis  (not likely, but possible).  If the prothesis was on the left leg then clearly it was not a factor in the accident and should not have been mentioned in the article.

  2. was the car’s brake pedal or his leg to blame here?.. I’m confused about the headline..

  3. Similar to the Fred Flintstone method he couldn’t get his foot down hard enough….don’t worry though, if he’s from Ohio they can’t hang him.
